View Full Version : Happier Happy Meals Petition

A report from the WWF says that Australian companies are going to have to rethink they way they do business with China because they need to be pressured into sustainable growth.

McDonald's is a huge client of China's toy-making industry - in the US, McDonald's can sell 100 million Happy Meal toys in 10 days!

With that sort of clout and that sort of consumption, McDonald's is in a great spot to demand sustainable toys. And we thought we'd give them a little shove in the right direction.

McDonald's is gung-ho about making Happy Meals healthier for our children, but we want them to be healthier for the planet too. We'd like to see McDonald's set standards so its toys are...

:: made from sustainable materials,
:: produced with green energy and
:: made as locally as possible to reduce transportation, and
:: be able to be recycled in our normal recycling bin!

Sign this petition before Monday 14th May, and we will present it to the CEO of McDonald's in Australia, Mr Peter Bush. (http://earthmums.org/node/52)

Poor McDonalds...
Can they do anything right?
Would everyone be prepared to pay around $10 for a Happy Meal because that's about what we'd be looking at...

I'm not having a go at Macca's - heck I've been known to make a midnight trip to the local more than once :o

I dont see how changing the production of the toys could rocket their meal prices to $10+... And if altering the production methods of cheapo' plastic nasties that end up in landfill DOES make their prices go up that much then maybe they should consider using renewable resources and create different kinds of toys?

I dont have the answers - I just know that 'something' needs to be done...

Im with MD on this one.. You cant expect something and not pay for it so of course prices will go up..

If you dont agree with/like it dont buy it.. *shrug*

Have to agree with Goose and MD here......

I agree that we need to reduce the rate of consumable items whereever we possibly can..... but what your suggesting would cost McDonalds an incredible amount of money, there would be so much involved in changing the production of these toys... they will in turn put the prices up for good.

Perhaps McDonalds could be encouraged to educate children to care for their environment through the packaging of these products and advertising..... they are always looking for an advertising gimick and it seems to me a more realistic ask for a multinational money hungry company like that.

This is an attack on noone, so please dont see it that way, but I think its much more effective to present petitions of this nature if you are actually doing the research and coming up with practical soloutions that satisfy the needs of the consumer and the company.

OT a little...
When I was discussing this topic with a friend she brought up something I had never thought of.
The placing of the toy on top of the food (in the box).
Food handling is of such a high standard in Australia and I'm sure McDonalds bends over backwards to adhere to this standard, yet we have plastic bags that have been handled by God only knows whom plonked on top of our childrens' fries. They need to stop that!
Now that's a petition I'd sign!

MD our toys have never been in the boxes. They are usually given at the first window (drivethrough) or given straight to the kids (in Store).
