Court to decide on Jesus

04jan06

A JUDGE has ordered a priest to appear in his court this month to prove that Jesus Christ existed.

The case against Father Enrico Righi has been brought in Viterbo, northern Italy, by author Luigi Cascioli, a militant atheist.
Mr Cascioli, author of a book called The Fable of Christ, sued Father Righi after the priest denounced him in a parish newsletter for questioning Christ's historical existence.

Mr Cascioli said there was no reliable evidence Jesus lived and died in first-century Palestine apart from the Gospel accounts, which Christians took on faith.

There was therefore no basis for Christianity, he said.

Not that I think the courts should be filled with such pointless matters (ie if the Priest can't prove it - which he won't be able to - it won't make Christians any less faithful) but in saying that he shouldn't have defamed the author. A bit of tit for tat.

Unlike some, however, Cascioli at least has a sense of humour. Asked about his chances, he replied: "It would take a miracle to win."
