Hi,

I am 5 to 6 weeks pregnant and have just had a look in at the new Casey Hospital in Berwick. It has not quite opened yet - but will be in full swing when I am due. They have excellent new facilities with all mod-cons etc. I would love to book into this hospital.
Rumor has it that they will tend to take only women that have normal pregnancies and have a limit of 30 BMI. Unfortunately I am about 32-33, however, I am quite healthy (never had any medical problems, and there are no genetic issues), I play sport, don't smoke, don't drink etc. Unfortunately I must just have a low metabolism.
I am not sure whether they will accept me - should there be a reason why?

My other option is Dandenong, but I really would prefer Casey.

My other issue is, after reading a few websites, there is a lot of debate over complications during the pregnancy (I have been quite normal to date) - is there any truth in this? Has anyone else gone through the same thing?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Personally I think the whole BMI thing gets taken a bit to far - you can still be fit and healthy and have a slightly higher BMI.
My sister had both her babies at Dandenong and was very happy.
I have my first child at the Angliss at Upper Ferntree Gully. They were fantasitc and I am going back there for number 2. I know it is a little bit futher away for you but it is a really great facility and I know they have no issues with BMI!
Good Luck!

Hi Haana,

Here is a definition of BMI straight out of a text book. I think it is basically a % figure of your body fat based on height and weight.

"Body Mass Index (BMI) is the measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women."

Apparently;

BMI Categories:

Normal weight = 18.5-24.9 BMI
Overweight = 25-29.9 BMI
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

Hope this is enlightening!!

Hi noniandlilysmum,

BMI stands for Body Mass Index, it is a result from comparing your weight to your height. Casey Hospital originally had it set to a maximum of 30.

However, I have recently spoken with them, and they have actually changed it to 35, as they believe 30 is quite low. So I am quite relieved know.

But for anyone interested in Casey. It is brand new - will open for patients in April 2005 - and the facilities are fantastic. They will also be introducing water births.
