Just wondering if anybody else has got a young child with asthma? We have just spent the last 2 nights in hospital after our 14month old had an asthma attack. Very scary. He responded well to treatment and came home this afternoon. We never knew he had asthma till now but wondered wether he wud have as he had history of lots of bronchiolitis in first 9months of his life. Anyway just wanted to know if theres any other mums with kids this age that have/had asthma?

My ds is 4.5 now but has had asthma since 8 weeks old, he was not formally diagnosed until 12 months because they didn't want to say for sure until then but had suggested it was and treated him for it since 8 weeks. He had his first and second attacks at 18 months, it was very scary! He hasnt had any since though... we spent 3 weeks at a friends house who smoked in the house... it could have cost him his life... we will NEVER stay anywhere that people smoke in the house again, I didnt realise until the second attack that thats what was causing it.
I hope your little boy is doing well now!

Thanks for the reply. Glad your son is well now. I think its very scary for anyone but more so in a child thats so little! I'm glad to hear we're not the only ones with this cos I havent heard of many kids this young with asthma. I really didnt know how common asthma is either or how serious it can be! We at home now tho and hes recovering well. :)
Hey,
My son is 12 months on Saturday and has had bronchiolitis many times over his short life. He has had a wheeze and has been on ventolin every time he gets sick because it always leads to him struggling to breath. My Dr says that they don't refer to it as asthma until after age two, but she says that that is exactly what DS has.
One thing that we have done that has changed my son's health and personality is taken him off dairy. He now sleeps well (first time ever, day and night), is content to play and hasn't been sick in over 6 weeks (a new record!). I really recommend doing it.
Asthma is very scary and I wish you all the best as you manage asthma.

My DS who is now 6 was diagnosed with asthma when he was 12 months. Last year we were finally able to take him off the puffers. Our specialist recommended not taking DS off dairy at the time. I suggested this as there was definitely a connection between dairy products and his breathing. Dr stated it was better to treat his symptoms that cut out whole food groups, as this can build up a sensitivity to that food. Plus obviously dairy is so important at this age. We got through it. Best of luck with your bubba

Thanks for the replies guys. Pleased to hear your little ones are doing well despite their asthma. Hadn't thought about the dairy product side of it (and no one else mentioned it) so thanks for that info too!
EJ's just had to go on ventolin via a spacer cause she has been coughing heaps when asleep. my normal doc has thought she's probably might have had asthma since about 7-8mths (is in the family) but it was never really treated apart from an attempt at ventolin syrup when she was approx 10mths and i ended up having to take her to another doc yesterday who put her on the ventolin cause she was very wheezy
He was saying a common sign of asthma is a lot of chest infections when they are young - which ej has had a few, and the night coughing which has been bad with EJ the last few weeks as she has a cold.
I've also noticed a connection between dairy and her breathing (especially since shes had this cold). I'm pretty sure dairy causes more mucus to be produced.
It's interesting about the sleeping also - cause EJ has been a shocking sleeper since about 4.5mths and hardly has ever slept for over 4 hours. Last night (after ventolin) she slept nearly all night from 10pm (only woke at 3.30am for a little while cause i needed to move her slightly as she was in bed with me)

One of my twin sons has asthma and he was diagnosed with it at 9 months, i took him to RCH and we stayed there the night, he responds very well to ventolin which is given through the spacer. He is now 18 months and every time he gets sick which is once a month we always give him his ventolin to help him breath. He is also in child care 3 days a week so we gave them a asthma management plan in case he gets asthma.
Its scary to begin with but with my husband and I mild asthmatics i wasnt surprised that he got it. Its all good now we know what to do when he has asthma so there is no stress anymore.
