View Full Version : Mystery spray lanolin ingredient?
Does anyone actually know what ingredients are in spray lanolin (besides the lanolin;) )???
I don't use it because I don't know what's in it. If I knew what was in it, and it was natural, then I'd probably give it a go.
Any clues:detective:
not sure whats in them but i found a recipe to make it:D
You will need one small spray bottle with fine spray mister
Ingredients:
100% Pure Liquid Lanolin
Distilled water
Mix 50% 100% Pure Liquid Lanolin with 50% distilled water in the spray bottle. Shake well. You can add one to two drops of pure essencial oil of your choice (optional).
To use, spray the lanolin directly on the wetness zone of your longies or soakers. It's that easy!
Yep, I've seen that recipe and it sounds pretty good.
I really like my liquid lanolin, I think I'm just being curious as to what's in it, and why they can sell it without the ingredients on the container.

You only need to list the ingredients for things designed for personal/body use eg skin care. I asked the same thing when I first started selling it and they don't list the full ingredients because some people would just copy the recipe and start selling it themselves :shame: so they choose to lose a few sales vs lose a lot.

Would it also have a stabilser in it? Like milk? (Except breastmilk ;))
I'm kind of wondering if it's essential oils or just fragrance, aswell as any other ingredients.

Most are fragrances not essential oils and there's some sort of emollient to stop it separating but I've no idea what type.

I've wondered about this too. Must have some sort of emusifier.
What's a stabiliser, Phin?
I have it (Sheepish Grins, I think from Janie), but I'd love to get liquid next time and use that both as it comes and as a spray.

That'd be the word I was going for

Think I'll stick to my liquid lanolin and just add some essential oils if I feel like having them smell nice.

Do I mean emusilfier? I'm not sure! I mean the stuff they use to homogenise cows milk so it doesn't seperate into layers ie. teh fat at the top.... I was thinkg they must do something like that with the spray lanolin so the lanolin doesn't seperate too much from the water....
My best guess is that it must contain at least an emulsifier and a preservative (you can't keep a water-and-oil solution safely without a preservative). But as Janie says, none of the companies seem to disclose their ingredients at all.

interestingly, lately I have been using a little bit of moo goo soap (scrape a little off) instead of baby wash when I dissolve my pea size solid lanolin in boiling water (before adding it to luke warm water), and am finding it is dispersing a lot better than in it was in baby wash... so wonder if the moo goo is actually helping it because of the dairy content?

I think milk homogenisation is done via physical methods, not via added chemicals. Otherwise, as a food, they'd have to list the emulsifiers on the label.
Ah, yes, here:

the milk is forced under pressure through tiny tubes to break up the fat globules.

Aaaaaaahh interesting.
O/T but I always buy unhomogenised. It's funny if I have people over and they go to use the milk, they come and tell me it's so off it's chunky

It's a pity df isn't here - he was a pasteuriser/cheesemaker for Dairy Farmers for 11 years:D (his dad's been there for over 30!)

PMSL:laughing: I buy unhomogenised organic milk when possible and got exactly the same reaction from DH. "Babe, the milk is off- it's all chunky! There isnt any milk for DD...." DUH:rolleyes: He just doesnt get it..... doesnt get that soakers loose their uriney smell as they dry either..... guess he is a bit slow!
Back on the topic, I have not used any spray lanolins or liquid lanolin, but the longies that turned up today had been spray lanolised I think... they smell really good but in an artificial kind of way. And it is rubbing off on everything! I would prefer essential oil smells really.

I just wandered across this discussion when Google redirected me from another search I was doing. I am the owner of Sheepish Grins so I can put some of the rumors to rest!
I don't disclose the ingredients of Sheepish Grins Creamy Spray Lanolin because it is a trade secret. There are numerous people who are copying Sheepish Grins products - or at least trying to. I actually ran across someone on a soap making list I am on who was asking the list members how to create creamy lanolin spray. Thank goodness for my business she was guessing in totally the wrong direction!
Products that are meant for skin use must have the ingredients disclosed. Since creamy lanolin spray is intended only for use on wool, not skin, it is considered a laundry product and disclosure of the exact ingredient list is not required.
We use ONLY cosmetic safe ingredients. We use a very common emulsifier. Despite what one competitor likes to tell people, we never have used solvents and never will. We use only pure lanolin and do not add any filler oils. In fact, all of the ingredients are things I use on my own skin or on my newborn baby.
You can find Sheepish Grins Creamy Lanolin Spray in unscented or essential oil varieties if you prefer, although our scented varieties are our top sellers. We use ONLY skin safe fragrances and never use citrus oils since they may damage wool.
There are NO dairy products in ANY Sheepish Grins products except our Goat's Milk Soap of course! We also never use gluten, almond or peanut oil in any product.
I hope that helps clear up some of the confusion.
