bwaha is that an impossible task or what?
I wouldn't mind sending Cobes to daycare on his birthday with some cake to share (I'm a dork, I know. :o) but as he's in the nursery room I'd like to see if I can get a cake that's at least dairy and egg free?
Actually I wouldn't mind a recipe for his own b'day party anyway, so younger bubs can have a share in it too. :)

We are actually having a dairy & egg free cake for DS' birthday next week. Not because there are any allergies, it's just that our friends are vegans and she makes the best cakes ever, so she has been charged with making his beehive cake.
I don't have any recipes myself but have a look on the net for some vegan recipes.

i know that you can use a vegetable oil instead of dairy in cakes. (yes i watch too much ready steady cook) but i am unsure of the quatities. maybe if you went on a cooking website you will find a good recipe.

The first one is the nicest - the second is more like a slice.

With that first one, can I skip the cocoa? just make a vanilla cake or something?

Also thanks for all the ideas, Scout love the Vegan idea :D

Reckon you could skip the cocoa. Wouldn't see why not. Maybe just a little Vanilla Essence so it doesnt seem too bland.

OK Seekrit - I just noticed that Cobey turns 1 in July. OMG how organised are you!!! That's disgraceful, you are a menace to every unorganised mother out there!
My friend who is making Saxon's beehive cake is coming over tomorrow with the practice cake that she cooked today. I'll get her to bring the recipes and post them here for you and the others.
She is actually making 3 different cakes - a lovely dense vanilla/coconut type (sounds gross but is divine & I hate coconut), a vanilla cake and a chocolate cake. We are copying the design:
Beehive cake (http://entertaining.about.com/od/cakebragbook/ig/Cakes-for-Little-Kid-Birthdays/Bumblebee-Birthday-Cake.htm) (click on Continue Gallery when link opens)
We are so lucky - our vegan friends don't force lentils onto us but rather their absolutely amazing dessert creations.

It will taste great too. My friend made cupcakes for my baby shower and they were amazing. I feel very lucky to have a friend like that, I have trouble boiling water :o.

ORGANISED?! ME?! OOooh you must be mistaken, I'm just a worrier who thinks I won't have anything organised so thought it's best to ask now when I remember. :p
That beehive cake looks great :D I think I'm going to try to make a Barney one for cobes.

Here is the cake recipe. We tried it today and it was amazing - it's a very dense cake, I don't like sponge cake so be aware it is heavier in texture.
125g Nuttelex softened
3/4 cup castor sugar
1tsp vanilla
1/2 cup soy yoghurt
2 cup SRF, pinch of salt (sifted)
1/2 cup soy milk (or freshly squeezed orange juice).
Mix ingredients together well.
This makes a cake big enough for an 18cm round pan or you can double it for a 25cm round pan.
Cook in a moderate oven for 50 min (but of course, each oven is different so check with a skewer).
The all important person, Saxon, tested the cake today and was thoroughly impressed and wanted to eat lots of it!

Could be an idea to check what allergies are in the room first, might be hard to make something suitable for all the kids ie dairy allergy or intolerance, gluten allergy etc. It would be awful for some kids to get to eat the treat and others to miss out.
Over here we take water ice blocks to daycare when it's our kids special day, that way any allergies are covered.

DD has allergies and her first birthday cake was a hit with everyone!
I just made a basic butter cake (recipe out of the back of the woman's day birthday cake book) and used Nutellex instead of normal butter, soy milk instead of cow's milk (use either Vita-Soy or smooth white....once cooked they don't taste like soy, other brands you can taste in the cooking) and used egg replacer instead of eggs. The icing was the same...replaced the butter with nutellex.
People only knew it was an allergy free cake cause I told them.
