Baby Cooper is now 5 days old and i have been cleaning his umbilical cord every day but today i noticed its a bit smelly. I asked the midwife about it today when she visited but she said that it looked normal and to just keep cleaning it but im just a bit concerned about the smell.

Did any other mums bubs have the same thing??

Hi there !!

Firstly congrats on baby Coopers birth !!
He is sooo cute :p

I had this problem with my first DS, i think it can get a little infected and a bit smelly but as long as your keeping it clean it should be ok. If it gets really red or pussy i would see your GP otherwise just keep up with the cleaning...

are you giving it a bit of a gentle twist when cleaning it...? this will help it drop off... (on advice from my MCHN - worked for us)

Good luck

I had the same thing with my daughter. I left hospital with her at five days old and the nurse that morning cleaned the cord and it fell off. After that the smell went. At my hospital they say to only clean it with warm water but my doctor said that she likes to use alcohol (apparently this is old school and they don't do it anymore). I found alot of the smell was also in her and my clothes and we washed these in detol to clean them.

Cooper's cord should drop off soon and then the smell should go. As long as there is no infection (redness or pussiness) i don't think that there is much else you can do other than keep it dry and clean.

Thank you for the replies.

I have the midwives ringing to check on me tomorrow so i might just mention it to them again and see what they say. My mum also said about using alcohol to clean it.

I also have to go the Dr tomorrow to get a script for the mini pill so i will also get him to check it but in the mean time i will use your advice and keep cleaning as i have been.

Indy had the same thing. the smell was yucky, but the midwife that comes around said it was perfectly fine, just as long as it doesnt start going red or a ring around it.
Also told me just to clean it with water and cotton bud every nappy change.. which i did. It seemed to take a while for hers to heal. But the midwife said due to some babies having much bigger cords, it can take a while longer.

I hope it's getting better.

We had a smelly one too.. the CHN said that it's perfectly normal ("after all, it's rotting meat" she said.. eewww)

Anyway, the others have given great advice.. I found cleaning with a cotton ball left strands, so we used a syringe (no needle of course) and squirted it with some luke warm water each change.. worked a treat.

Cute bub too!
