View Full Version : Ferber's gone soft!

Apparently, Dr Ferber has a new book coming out and now he's saying it's ok to co-sleep. (I don't know if we should be pleased that he has said that, or saddened that parents are only game to admit to co-sleeping because Ferber says it's ok. See link below)

And in some interviews, he's even saying that he regrets some of the advice he gave before and feels badly that child health professionals are encouraging parents to leave very young babies to cry.

It is a testament to Dr. Ferber's influence that even the halfhearted nod he has given the practice in interviews has inspired a kind of collective coming-out party among co-sleeping parents. Transcripts of his network news and talk show appearances last month are being circulated on the Internet and recited on the playground.

Has anyone else heard anything similar?
Will be interesting to see what his new 'relaxed' position is!

I've heard similar around the boards.
It's about time too.
I can't believe my CHN did a day stay with me and told me the only way Libby would learn to sleep was to let her cry it out! A six-week old baby!
We watched "Meet the Fockers" yesterday - and I felt like flinching when they were "Ferberising" the little baby. The best line in the movie, however was when Jack Byrnes stormed off in his motorhome, and Mama Focker said (tongue in cheek) to let him go because "he needs to learn to self-soothe".LOL

Having said this, I know CC can and does work for a lot of older babies/toddlers, and I intend no disrespect to any of the mums out there who have successfully implemented it. Controlled comforting is of course a lot different to cry-it-out. Neither worked for us so we won't be going there again!

Nickster, that's right.. and didn't the other family come along and say they would 'Fockerise the baby'? Too funny. :)

I loved seeing old Ferber 'back down' a little, it was on the national news a couple of weeks ago.
I think the main issue was that people were being really rigid with the controlled crying/cry it out thing, even to the point of subjecting sick and terrified children to these methods, and carrying it on way too long, when it was apparent it simply was not going to 'work'

It almost sounded as though he himself has become a little traumitised by the way his ideas have been used, way more strictly than he ever intended.

I think his work took on a life all of it's own.

lol Cosmic - "Fockerise"!

My baby is definitely "Fockerised"!!!:D

re: Apprentice Momma - I hate hearing how parents subject their children to these methods to the point of the baby actually vomiting because they are so distressed. Not too far away from the "Pearls" if you ask me!:(

Sounds like Ferber got some evidence ;) Now if only he'd recant loud and proud and save more babies from this appalling crap.

What a wonderful revelation! :D

The tide is slowly turning, with a lot of good science to back it up. I can't wait for the day they rewrite the text books :D
