Hi girls,

I'm trying to set myself up with some MCNs before bub arrives, and I think I read somewhere where hemp MCNs can get pretty stinky. Is this still the case with good laundering? Also is there a big difference in size of a hemp and bamboo? i.e are bamboos ok for day use? I'm thinking BBH are the way to go.

I find that the hemp nappies that I have only get smelly if I have used too much detergent and they get a build up. Of course the night nappy stinks, but that has been on for 8 hours.

Bamboo and hemp BB are about the same IMO. However, you could get away with less boosting for day with bamboo, so it would be trimmer than hemp in that respect.

My night hemp nappies get stinky, but if they get bad I put some teatree oil in the final rinse and they're fine after line drying in the sun.

Many people find that hemp has it's place as a great day nappy, with bamboo for night because bamboo is much more absorbant then hemp in general.

Yes, hemp can get stinky, usually if too much powder is used- only 1/4-1/2 the usual amount should be used to wash all mcn's. No other wash additives- such as softener.
Some people find that a hot wash every now and then fixes up any smellies. And a good bake in the sun on the line is all that's needed to sanitise the nappies and help prevent smells too

I personally adore the softness, luxury and amazing absorbancy of bamboo so feel no need to hemp except for in pocket inserts because it dries faster and isn't going to come into contact with my babies' skin like it would in a fitted nappy.
Bamboo baby beehinds are amazing!!

They don't need to be baked. In fact, baking can damage the elastic/pul etc in the nappy if done too often.
To sanitise, all you need is UV light. So even on overcast days, when you can't see any sunlight at all, nappies will be sanitised. That's why we can still be burnt when there's no sun around.

The majority of my nappies are hemp plus another 1/3 are bamboo. I agree with Pookiesossige, Baby Beehinds are definitely amazing:yes:

I find that my French Terry Hemp inserts get that "organic" smell when wet with urine. But as the other's have said 1/4-1/2 detergent in warm to hot water and dried outside does the trick!

I just had a disaster with all my nappies (bamboo, fleece, hemp, sherpa, suedecloth) absolutely stinking to high heaven, I think because I washed in warm instead of hot a few times. I got rid of the smell with the canisten in wash germ killer stuff. Worked a treat. We haven't had good nappy drying weather lately, not much sunshine at all. Just doing a few hot washes didn't work to get rid of the smell.

Apperently you can do a strip wash with bicarb and vinegar, or with dishwashing liquid. I thought the canisten stuff would be a good idea at the moment for us anyway because Lachy has a tummy bug, and then I'd try the bicarb and vinegar if that didn't work.

But considering we've been using cloth since Oct last year and only had one major stink incident I think thats pretty good

I find that the hemps smells a bit when it has dried inside on rainy days, and perhaps not got fully dry. Not sure if that makes sense. lol. But if it has been a really nice breezy warm day & nappies have dried on the line - no smell.

Thanks so much girls, that really helps me decide how to set myself up with mcn's. Cheers.
