View Full Version : What to buy for No. 2
I am wondering what I will need for baby number 2. Ds will be 19 months, so we are thinking that he may be ready to move from the cot to a big bed. Then the bub could have the cot. Is this realistic?
I'm also undecided about a pram too. Would I need a double one, or would a skateboard on the back of my Mountain buggy suffice?
We will definitely need a car seat.
Is there anything else other than clothes, nappies etc?

Yeah i think that DS will be ready to move from a cot to a bed well i put my son in a bed at 19 months due to me being sick of my number 2 son being in a porta cot lol (15 months between sons). You will probably need a car seat though as DS probably wont be big enough to go in a booster seat, i didn't buy too much when i was pregnant with son number 2 though because i knew that they were the same sex so they could use all the same clothes and i knew that alot things are given as presents. As for a pram if my partner wasn't coming shopping with me i would walk Blaze into the shops carrying Bailey and grab a trolley with a capsule on it and put blaze in the trolley part. I brought a cheap stroller for when my partner came shopping with me though. I hope this helps.

Hi Wattle!
On the bed issue. I was hoping to keep DS in his cot for a couple of months after the baby is born and then convert it into the toddler bed thing, but he started climbing out a few months ago.
Instead we are buying a toddler bed that converts into a single, from IKEA, as it is lower to the ground and he still falls out a lot. Makes it a bit easier than moving them straight into a huge bed.
I have one of the Seat2Go attatchments for the pram already but we are buying a sling, which I think will be the most use.:)
Wattle, re: the pram thing, I have heard others talk about carrying one in a sling or a carrier and putting the other into the pram. I think they say 2yrs and up for the kiddy board with the MB?
I plan to use a sling for the wee one and the existing pram for ds. So I'm only buying some newborn nappies for this one :) Got boobs, got a bed we all sleep in!

Mine are 20 months apart.
I sold the MB and bought a Phil and Ted's. Bottom line - I miss the MB. But I needed a double pram (and I am a sling wearer too) and found the Phil and Ted's set up better than any other toddler seat option. (I just wish MB would make a toddler seat:rolleyes: ). In hindsight and with no financial restrictions I would have kept the single MB and bought a double MB. Having said that, we are still using the Phil and Ted's and both girls often ride in it so it is pretty useful still (and they are one and three (almost)). I can see us using it for a long time in the future. I think that Max, if he is anything like DD1, will not be ready for the buggy board for a while. With a seat you have somewhere to sit and restrain them when you are loading and unloading cars, attending to baby, etc - you don't have to worry about them running off etc - and if they are tired and want to fall asleep in the pram they can, without you having to juggle baby and sling etc. (Although I love slings there is a point where your body needs to NOT be carrying a baby all the time IMO!)
We had a borrowed bassinet for DD2 then bought DD1 an Ikea bed with drawers underneath (so a bit lower than some others) and she moved into that and DD2 got the cot, so that was simple. It bought us a few more months of DD1 in the cot and gave us time to prepare her for the "big bed".
I moved the change table into the bathroom (luckily we had room) so that it was between the two rooms and one didn't get woken if the other needed a mid-night change.
Re the car seat - we bought a Safe-n-Sound maxi rider for DD1 and moved DD2 into her carseat (we hired a capsule for the first 6 months) and are very happy with the maxi rider - it becomes a booster eventually and DD1 loves her "big girls" seat.
Don't worry too much about clothes - DD2 has a ridiculous number of clothes that often go unworn as she has hand me downs from DD1 and a cousin plus people bought her heaps when she was born, thinking we didn't need toys because of DD1 (and they were right!)
If I think of anything else I will let you know;)

lol my yds was in a portacot for the first few weeks too!! there is 16 months between my boys and i found that Rylen was ready for a toddler bed so while he was getting used to it yds was in the portacot and once we was used to it baby went straight into the cot.
The only thing i found i had to buy extra were nappies, i did buy a double stroller but we don't use it much any more and we'll get a skateboard attachment for our regular pram pretty soon. With the car seats we had a spare that we used for df's car so ods had that one and once he was a bit bigger we got him a toddler seat and yds still has the car seat that ods had as a baby.
We only bought a few extra items of clothing cause ods was a spring baby and yds is a summer baby but that was pretty much it as far as i can remember.
hehe a second set of boobs... wouldn't that make the men in our lives happy:p
I can only give my advice on the bed area as we only have the one bub so far.
We put her into a single bed at 16 months (1 month ago) and she is fine. She slept with us before that as she hated her cot!
We bought a normal single bed and a bed rail guard so she can't fall out. It is too big for her to get up on her own, but she can slide off fine when she wants to. It won't be long till she can climb up on her own.
The toddler beds are great and very cute, but then you will need another cot matress to fit in it.
