View Full Version : Implantation question
Don't get any ideas - not TTC at the moment, just curious - I should know this but have forgotten - how long after conception does implantation normally occur?
Also - do we always feel pain with implantation? I definitely felt it with DD2 - knew the minute it happened what it was and that this was a baby who was here to stay (and we weren't TTC). With DD1 I was completely oblivious - which doesn't mean that I didn't experience it - I just didn't notice it.

I read anywhere from 7-10 days just before or even around the time your AF would be due.
Not everyone get's a bleed or pains tho, I never did with either of my girls:o

I felt some pain. Almost like AF cramps for about a week. Got shock of my life when I found out I was with child..
I had AF like cramps with both but both times didn't think I was pregnant.
This is part of the reason for my question - I had AF like cramps too and thought that must have been the implantation feeling - then with DD2 I had a sharp shooting pain in both ovaries - and that is when I knew i was pregnant (don't know how or why I knew - but I turned to DH who I was out walking with and said "uh oh - I think we are in trouble" - and two weeks later got a very faint line on a stick.) Now I get AF like cramps when ovulating, so was trying to work out which of the different feelings was actually implantation and which was ovulation and which was just all in my head?!
I only had the AF type cramps about a week before my AF was due, and they were definately different to any types of O cramps. Sorry can't be of more help.

Theresa, to be honest, I don't know where the heck I am in my cycle :o .
I just hope AF turns up once a month :D
I am trying to get my head around all of it as I have only had one period in the last three and a half years and that was three weeks ago:o Before I make decisions about going back on the pill I wanted to sort out what sort of cycle I was having (partly to see if my PCOS is "better"). Will keep pondering it all!
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:12
I have PCOS too and I came off the pill for the same reason..I also had a shoulder reconstruction 6 weeks before I found out I was pregnant, so that means..yes, I concieved while my arm was strapped to my body :o I really need to start charting or something to know where I am..
LOL KM
Sounds interesting?!

Must have been sleeping heavy that night! :D :p
Were you on morphine for the pain?
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:18
I wish!!!! No, didn't feel any pain at all. Had one of those pumps in hosp and just pressed the button for the buzz :p
Don't tell me you conceived in hospital?
Oops sorry taking over thread, better move this converstation to the other one KM.
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:22
Imagine that!!! That would be very funny!! No I think it was about 4 weeks after the op. Was in hosp for 1 night..that was enough..
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:23
I was thinking the same...Sorry draught :o
Don't move it - I am entertained!
I am thinking about charting my cycle too - had a look at one of JanetF's links to the billings method site. Don't know if I want to rely on it for birth control necessarily but would like to just be a bit more in tune with what is happening IYKWIM
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:25
Yes, IDKWYM..
I'm not currently on the pill either. Does funny things to me..
But do you REALLY want contraception?
I'm sort of working on three at the moment but DH has other ideas.
I would love a third further down the track, maybe 5 or so years.
We'll see.:)
This is probably TMI but I don't want to go back on the pill because after what feels like a lifetime of being pregnant or breastfeeding I am finally feeling like me again - and enjoying being intimate with DH - and it is nice to feel normal again! We are playing a bit of russian roulette with contraception though which is part of why I want to work out my cycle so that I can make some decisions about what is good for us.
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:29
No, we just think if it happens, then its meant to be..like K. I only want two though. First pregnancy wasn't much fun. Spent most of it in pain and in hosp
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:30
I hear you draught!!! I got a maybe baby to try and work out when I could concieve, and so Dh could sleep in the spare room :p
I am happy to see what happens in the conception department - but can I stress again we are NOT TTC:D - because DH would have a heart attack! The good thing is that we are both communicating very openly about what we are doing re contraception at the moment so that if something surprising does happen it will be because it was meant to be.
Do you reckon a maybe baby would work as contraception rather than to assist conceiving?
Know what you mean Theresa.
Big decision. Good luck with it!:)
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:33
It has so far!!!! K is six months and no other babies yet! dr told me its not a reliable form of contraception, but the only reliable form is to not have intimate relations with ones husband. Like thats not going to happen :p
I think that would only work if you were really regular.
I used an OPK with this pregnancy and we only BD'd 3 days before I got a + on the OPK, and then I got sick. There is so much room for conception in the days leading up to it. IYKWIM.
I could be completely wrong though.
Indeed!! Isn't that what husbands are for? :D
Ok, so don't listen to me.......
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:37
I'm listening to you E..Mmmmmm this marshmallow slice is too good :p
I meant don't listen to me because I have no idea what I'm on about and I'm speaking crap.;)
HL - I think you are right - it is not a reliable method - just a technical version of the billings method really - and I know lots of stories of billings babies:p .
I think I will rely on DH's regular absences as the best form of contraception for a while! Once I have ocmpletely weaned DD2 (she is still on two feeds a day) then I might try the pill and see how I feel........but if I don't feel "normal" I am coming off it quick smart! Sigh - decisions, decisions!
Now back to the original question - do we think that implantation is about a week after conception?
I am so full of sweet food I'm going to explode.
I was so proud that I had only put on 2 kg, and I have put on another 2 this week alone!
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:39
41 to go!!!!!! I'm still listening. OMG just found glasses. On my head :o I should really get more sleep....
Hmmm yes think your right about a week.....
LOL KM.
Mmmm a week did you say Theresa........
melfunction
31-12-2005, 13:42
I always thought it was 7-10 days past ovulation, but I could be wrong. Where is Cecil? She knows these things..
Ok a week it is for now.
DD2 has just woken up - back to mummy duties!
Hubby and I decided long before we married we'd stop birth control when we were ready for #1, and not touch birth control again until we'd finished having kids, let nature do the spacing out.
Theresa, when I was TTC I became a walking conception encyclopaedia. Implantation can happen anywhere from 5 to 12 days after conception, but most commonly around the 7-10 day mark. For me, I had dull twingey like feelings right down the bottom of my belly around 7-8dpo... almost an AF type feeling but more of just a feeling that 'something' was going on down there. I had a temperature dip the same day (I think) so that was definitely implantation. I did the test at 9dpo and it came up positive.
I don't think everyone gets pain, and I think even with individuals, it will vary between pregnancies (like everything else!).
For a few months before conceiving, I started charting at www.fertilityfriend.com. The basic chart is free. I personally found temperatures more reliable than anything else, but the danger with trying NOT to conceive is that you can only confirm ovulation after the event . But it is definitely a GREAT way to find out what your body is doing. After being on the pill for 15 years, I had no idea what was 'normal' for me and soon found that in my 26 day cycle, I was ovulating on Day 15 and had an 11 day luteal phase... so if I followed all the 14 day rules, I would have been stuffed.

Yes boss
now about conception, how does it happen??
Well first you need to have your arm strapped to your body and then...........
melfunction
31-12-2005, 14:03
I forget the rest :o
Cecil can you fill us in?:p
Oh, so you only know some of the details.
Like, implant cramps can happen 7 - 10 days after conception (just keeping us on track again.);)
melfunction
31-12-2005, 14:11
If you anything like me, you would have cramps for 10 weeks!!!!!!! Spent lots time in hosp..
Yep.. you take your temperature and when it goes up, up, up and stays up, that's how conception happens. When it goes down at 7dpo, that's how implantation happens. It's all in the thermometer... which you stick under your tongue by the way.
melfunction
31-12-2005, 14:14
I was hoping you stick it under your tongue :o :p
So are you telling me all that business with my DH was completely unnecessary?
There are indeed other ways to take your temperature, KM. And some say if you don't get an accurate reading under your tongue, you should try Plan B.
Happy Rady, what are you talking about? Do you know something about conception that we don't?

Didn't think I was that bad.........think I will go back to lurking.
ok I have to go and buy a fan too. So get crackin' with your last 15 posts, KM.
I have to admit, I do feel bad that when Draught comes back she's going to have 15 pages of cr*p to read. Do I have to put a * in cr*p? Or is it an asseptable word?
melfunction
31-12-2005, 14:40
Very asseptable C..Draught doesn't care..I apologised way back!!
yeah, that was after a brief digression about your hospital antics. Somehow, I think this is different.
You girls crack me ... like consistently ... up :D . I think a bit of digression is good for the soul (as long as no-one is p*ssed off by it) :o . I couldn't believe this thread had got to so many posts in the hour since I read it, but we have successfully completed the mission (re timing of implatation).
Hi Cosmic
I think that cr*p is one of those grey areas that we have here. I have let it go by in the past, but if you do put the * in it as you type, it saves someone else having to think about it. That's got to be good for the planet (esp if its the poor mod whose dealing with the disgusting habit thread - so glad its not me :D , I can remain very safely ignorant).
Cheers and have a great NYE

I don't mind the digression - have the answer I was looking for and now just enjoying the entertainment!
I haven't read the disgusting habits thread either - does one of the moderators need to look at it? (I think it is Happy Lady's area:D )

Thanks Draught..hope your not mad at us for hijacking your thread :o
Draught, Happy Lady is indeed in charge of that area and she informs me she is skim-reading the emails to save dry-wretching. It's not 'bad' in the sense that it needs checking on.. it just makes for really gross reading!
