Moving interstate....any tips and ways to save money?

I am moving interstate in a few months and want to know if anyone has any tips for saving money moving house and anything else that might help. Thanks in advance!

With a removalist see about getting a backload if you are moving from/to a bigger place. You may have to be a little more flexible with dates but it could be cheaper. And ring around a lot of places and get quotes from them all and then see if anyone will better the lowest quote you've been given.

We aren't moving interstate but we are moving from 1 end of the state to the other, we are going to sell anything we don't need or anything that we can replace just as cheaply up there.

And if you are driving to your new home don't be afraid to load as much in the car as possible. Or if your flying, pack as much as you can in your luggage without going over your weight limits!

Most removalists sell secondhand packing boxes, or you can try your local newspaper for anyone getting rid of any boxes.

If you have friends that can help move probly males as you probly have alot of heavy things maybe hire a big moving truck and do it all yourself? Also a trailer on the back of your car if you needed it. Usually with truck/ trailer hires u can drop them off in the other state. And for boxes there are places that do second hand boxes cheap or.... go to a shop and ask if they have boxes they dont need that would be suitable for packing (they usually throw them out in the big bins anyway) good to recycle:thumbsup:. And as neeky said fit alot in your car (most likely the valuables).

We moved from Perth to Adelaide using a company called Crown Relocations. The cheapest way to move a house is by train in a sea conatiner. Get three quotes and see what suits you. You can't take over any plants unless you want to pay for quarantine. A lot of shed stuff DH had to give away like paints, oils, aresol cans etc... as they wont take them on board.

You can either pack up your house your self or you can get your removalist to do it. Cost more money though. In total it cost us about $2500 to move our house. As for car we put them on a TNT truck cost about $230 for my little excel.

Pack as much as you can yourself. Removal companies make their big bucks off labour fees and most aren't qualified anyway. Only take what you know your going to need or use and sell everything else, the less you have the cheaper it is. Pack your essentials and important papers with so if some of your stuff goes missing you have your essentials. If your staying in a motel, pack a small electric stove top or frypan to cook with so your not forced to spend lots of take away foods.

definitely pack everything yourself, as suggested beforehand. also look at having a garage sale before you move, it serves the purpose of both doing a decent clean out (and be ruthless!) and earning a few extra $$!

I have to agree with the shopping around for quotes. When we moved interstate some companies quoted me double what other's did. We chose a company that was based where we were moving to so they picked our stuff up on the way back to their base when they were pretty empty so we got a good price.
