I failed miserably today trying to make ryan his birthday cake for tomorrow, it was rather amusing though.
I followed all the instruction in the Womans Weekly Party cake book to make the train.
For some reason, my square cake rose so much in the middle it looked more like a pyramid, so when I trimmed it down to be level, there wasn't much cake left.
After cutting it in half and standing one piece up and placing a jam log ontop to resemble the engine, it sort of took shape, then came the icing... it ended up looking like a big blue toilet...
I quit, went down to woolies, bought two mud cakes which i'll decorate with candles and sprinkles..
Hopefully the party will go alot smoother tomorrow, were having around 20 parents and kiddies over for a bbq pool party. It's going to be HOT!
Happy New Year everyone

lol I would've kept the blue loo and said "it's a mile stone for a young boy and hopefully a year to start potty training" lmao
As a veteran of the WW birthday cake cookbook my big tip is - don't do it in summer! That butter icing melts and runs everywhere! In cooler weather it is fine but this time of year, unless you have the aircon on full blast is just a recipe for disaster! (although it can be salvaged by sticking the whole cake in the fridge to set it!)
The mud cake will be great, the kids will have a ball and I hope you do too!
You poor thing! I have to admit, your post made me laugh though :)
My mum was forever making fancy cakes for our birthdays....until she made a new friend who happened to be a professional cake decorator...I don't think she ever bothered again! But that year I had a gorgeous Cabbage Patch doll birthday cake!! It was beeeeeeeeeeewdiful!
Lucky he's 1 and wont' notice what kind of cake it is....but you better start practising for next years!!! :D

As for the cake, hey at least you made an effort to begin with, but hey that train cake is hard. I have tried that one before.

On the topic of birthday cakes, my mum used to bake all types of novelty cakes and she did a huge clean of her cupboard and gave me all her novelty cake tins. So if anyone wants to borrow them that live in Brisbane, let me know.
I have
Rudolph
Santa coming down a chimney
a Train that can also be a wagon
A soldier
Strawberry shortcake
there are a few others but I cannot remember what they are at the moment.

Good Luck Bride83.. I should have done a test run.
I found it hard trying to find the right lollies to go on the cake, after tracking them down at a candy factory in an industrial area of the Gold Coast, being wolf wistled by the cabinet makers in the shed next door and intimated to hell.... i don't need them... I'll just have to save them for one of my "craving" days to come.
My icing did melt and go everywhere. ithought I would recycle and put the remaining icing on some fool proof muffins I made in a muffin machine, iced them, sprinked and set them down.. walked off pretty smug about my nice job, came back and the blue icing had melted all over my counter top and dribbling down my cabinet doors....that's with aircon blasting this afternoon. I can't win! LOL
