ok you b/f wizzes, i need some advice form those of you who express as well as feed (like together - say your saving some milk for a rainy day - or maybe that night away! lol)

im about to start a mass pumping spree - as ds is now gaining weight again and seems to be fine, however i dont want to go and steal all his milk before he gets it!

usually i would pump while feeding him (as he is a one side per feed feeder) i have the pump ready to go to catch that letdown and beyond on the other breast.

i have heard somewhere that this will affect the amount of fat he will be getting - and as i mentioned, he has had weight issues recently and i dont want to have him lose again!

if any one can help please do!!

thanks heaps in advance!

Hi there,

Can't help you with this one as I always pumped both boobs after a feed, once a day, while I was stocking my freezer for returning to work. But you can always feed it back to him if he still seems hungry?

Maybe the ABA helpline would be useful?

Good luck!

I dont think it would efect the fat content of the milk at all. I am assuming you mean from the breast you pump from, then he feeds from that side later on.

The breast continually makes milk and after 20mins the breat is 'ready' for feeding again

hope that helps

I expressed my nipples off for the first 5 months of my sons life (he was 12 weeks premmie). The hardest part of combining the two is to either express as soon as your baby finishes, (it may not be much to begin with but keep on trying after each feed) it steals none of the precious foremilk which is highest in nutrients and fat and if you keep it up will give you a larger milk supply in the future (good for when he starts to need more) Or your other option is to wake in the middle of the night when your baby might be sleeping thru a feed and express the skipped or no longer required feed. If you need any extra help the ladies at your local ABA are very helpful and can really give you some fantastic advice. Hope this helps some!
