Just a silly question, it came to me when i was arranging the stuff for bottle feeding...i'm going to try and wean bubs off the breast next week ... my question is that why do bottles have differing teats i.e. fast flow, slow flow etc, when bubs is on the breast you dont get to change "teats" whether they are one day old or one year old...like I said silly question.

I think as a baby gets older their suck gets stronger and they can remove your milk faster.

Bottles are easy to get milk from, slow flow is fro newborns and babies up to 3 months, medium for babies upto 6/9 months, and fast for anything over that.

Hope that helps.

ETA; you can aslo get variable flow teats where the flow is controlled by baby, but I don't recommend these as a lot of babies have trouble with them.

Lunar is right, your flow adjusts to babys needs.

Are you are breastfeeding and feeding EBM in bottles? If so, it is best to use a slow flow nipple because it best replicates the breast. Getting milk out of a regular teat is so easy for bubs and it can make them lazy and impatient when on the breast. If my 6 month+ baby was having EBM, I'd stick to slow-flow to help maintain the breastfeeding relationship!

My son actually really likes the variable flow teats. After trying out a few different ones we found these were better as you could tailor the speed of the feed to his mood and appetite. Now that he's older he turns it himself to get the exact flow speed he wants.

My son is just over 3 months old and in the last week has decided that the slow flow teats are too slow for him and he gets really frustrated with them. He gets EBM & his medicine 3 times a day in a bottle and he's now really only happy if I use the medium flow teat. He's still breastfeeding fine.

Yeah, you can get Y-opening teats... which will give them more or less milk depending on how hard they suck. They don't offer anything if they're not being sucked on... whereas the fast/slow/etc flow ones drip (obviously, the faster ones flow faster) and can easily leak everywhere.

We used the Pidgeon Peristaltic Y-cut ones... they were so good.

Do those wide neck Happy Baby teats fit in the Avent bottles without leaking?
