Hi all,

I am posting this on behalf of my MIL so I hope it makes sense!!!

I have given her links to the Aubrey Doodle, Tinybirds and a cargo style longies patterns for her to knit.

However she rang me tonight because apparently they are all using american yarns? Which differ from Aust?

So her q's was what wool would she use for these patterns- apparently different wool changes the tension or something!?!?

Can someone please help me with some more info regarding knitting longies- what brand wool you use, what type of wool, somewhere I might find an australian pattern........any info I can give her would be much appreciated!!

Sorry if this doesn't make much sense- can you tell I am not a knitter:laughing:

THANKS!!

Here is a link I always use when I need to convert knitting things - http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/tips/convert.htm

HTH!

ETA: Those patterns will all be fine - you don't need a specific 'aussie' pattern. Personally, the longies I've made so far have been with 8ply 100% wool with size 4 needles. But there are variations of course. The chart above explains the different wools and tensions.

The tinybirds pattern is a really easy one to start with too :)

I'm knitting the Doodlepants atm and it needs 10ply wool if you use the needles it says :)

I'm not a knitter either but my Mum is  and I've bought quite a few woollies as well and always made a point of asking what wool they used!

Wool should be as close to 100% wool as possible to get all the benefits of the natural fibre (breathability, moisture repellence, ammonia neutralisation etc).

She uses 8-10ply, I'm told you could use 12ply too for heavier longies or a night-time soaker (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!)

I can't remember what needles Mum uses, I can ask her though if you like.

Some wool recommendations - Cleckheaton Country 8ply (relatively cheap, colourful and knits up nice and soft), Treliske Organic Merino (a bit more expensive but gorgeous), someone said Patons Totem was OK too?
