I have finally done my birth story, so here it is.

Due date – 24th July 2006

21st July 2006.
Had an OB appointment where she did a stretch and sweep and told me my cervix was still quite far back and still long and not favourable and bubs head was still not engaged. She said that she would see us next week.

My due date came and still nothing, not a show, not any sort of niggles, nothing. The S&S did nothing. I had in my head that I would have this baby on the 1st August so I was still feeling really good at this stage.

28th July 2006. (40+4 weeks)
Had another OB appointment and he check to see how my cervix was, and it was still long and far back and I was about 1 – 2 cm dilated but still not favourable. He ask us what we wanted to do, I was trying for a VBAC, so if we wanted to, he would have booked me in for a C/S straight away, but I asked to wait another week. He agreed but I had to have another scan to check the placenta, have a full set of blood test and I have to go in on the Monday to have a heart beat trace and blood pressure check thing. The scan was all good, the placenta was starting to deteriorate but normal for being 40+ weeks. The heart beat trace was perfect.

1st August 2006. (41+1 weeks)
Today was the day that I thought I would have my baby but it came and went with nothing happening.

4th August 2006 (41+4 weeks)
Had another OB appointment at 8.30am and DH came with me as we new we would have to make a decision about what to do. We thought we would have to come back the next day to be induced so DH was dressed for work as that is where he was going after our appointment. I was still only 2 cm dilated and she asked what we wanted to do, c/s or induction, we choose induction. She sent us upstairs straight away, we weren’t prepared for that, we thought we would have the day to organise things.
They tried to break my waters but they couldn’t get the hook in as my membranes was to thick, so after about 20 mins of the OB trying, and me trying to claw my way up the bed in pain as my cervix was still far back, she got some scissors to snip the membranes, oh my flippen lord, that is the one and only time I want a pair of scissors up there. It was not a nice experience getting my waters broken. It was about 10am and they finally broke/sniped my waters and they gave me 4 hours to see if I would go into labour by myself. DH went to work just to drop a few things off and by this stage my Mum was with me, so we walked the hospital to try and get something happening. 2pm came and I was still not in labour so they put me on the drip, wow, within the next 45 mins, I was full on labouring. As I was trying for a VBAC, I was hooked up to all the monitors so I only had about a meter to walk around as that is as long as the cords were.

At about 6pm, the OB came in to check how I was going, did an internal only to find I hadn’t gotten anywhere, still only 2cm dilated and bubs head still not engaged. I couldn’t believe it.
8.30pm came and I was starting to get very tired and needed something for the pain, so I started on the gas. I had heaps of trouble working out when to start sucking and then my mouth would get dry so I would stop sucking, I don’t think it did much at all.

10pm came and I was so tired I was trying to sleep in between contractions which were about 1 Min apart and lasting for about 40 secs. I was standing at the end on the bed and with every contraction I would lean over the bed with DH rubbing my back then I would sit down in between.

10.30pm was the end of my mid wifes shift and just as she was about to walk out the door I ask for an epi, so she went an ordered one, but said I might have to wait about an hour, I thought I was going to die. Next minute he walked through the door, I could have kissed him, I did tell him how much I loved him. The epi was in and it was bliss, I just went straight to sleep and so did DH.

12 midnight the OB came and did another internal to see how it was all going, but I still hadn’t gotten anywhere, still only 2 cm and bubs head still not engaged. She asked me if I wanted to go now for a c/s, but I asked for another couple of hours, but because I had already got for so long, and did not progress, she had to go and check with the head OB because for a VBAC, you are only allowed to labour for about 10 hours, she came back and agreed to let me go another 2 hours, but that was it. So I went back to sleep.

3am the OB came back only to find that I was still only 2 cm so she said we have to go to theatre. We got to theatre and I started throwing up while trying to sleep as I was still so so tired.

3.41am Phoenix John was born. 3860g, 51 cm long and 35 cm head.

I slept through the whole birth. DH kept trying to wake me up but I would just go back to sleep. I opened my eyes when Nix was born to have a quick look then I went back to sleep. I didn’t have my first hold till I was in recovery about 20mins later as all I wanted to do was sleep. I was also told that there was no way Nix head would have fit through my pelvis.

Wow, well done if you got through all of that.

ahhh Mell - you little Aussie Champion!

big head that Nix of yours has, all those brains he has to fit in there, is it any wonder?

I think that you did really well - the labouring is the hardest bit, the crowning is only a smidge, you may as well have had that VBAC!

Love Jess

Thanks everyone, i am so greatful that i got to labour and to labour as long as i did, i gave it a real go. With DS1, he was breech, so i didn't labour at all, so i was feeling like i was missing out.

Thanks for sharing your story. No one can say you didn't give VBAC the best go possible. You must have been so worn out in the end. I bet it was a long while til you got that sleep you needed.:D

I'm also a fan of your name choice. Congrats!!
