View Full Version : Dry nappy after 4hrs?
I have just woken my 5week old DD up to give her a bottle before I go to bed. I went to change her nappy, while trying to wake her, and it wasn't wet at all. She had a bottle at about 5:30pm, then I changed her nappy at about 6:30 and put her in bed, little bugger played til 8:00pm tho
It is pretty hot here still, but she has had 6 bottles today, well, she's half way thru number 6 now, but she has dozed off again
I'm just wondering if this is normal? Should I be worried at all? Can I give water to her between bottles yet?

I'm not sure what advice i can give - not being medically minded, but I gave my four year old boiled water from the time he was 3 days old. There has been times when the nappies were dry, but if you are really worried about it I would call the child health nurse or health direct on 1800 022 222. They are really nice and have never laughed at me yet when I ring up and ask weird questions!

If I were you, before panicking, I would check it in maybe half an hour or an hour, maybe she didn't need to go yet. My girls occassionally had dry nappies at weird ages for it but went at sometime not long after I noticed.
If it has been hot maybe she is sweating more or her body is distributing fluid differently and doesn't need to pee as much.
If she hasn't done a wee by her next nappy change I would call someone then.

It should be ok as long as she has had wet nappies all day & isnt lethargic or her "normal" self.
My bubs did this from time to time but was never more than the one nappy so i never stressed as one nappy is no major drama IMO but if it were continuous then something could be wrong.
But im also not medically trained so if your worried like W & T's sleepy mummy said give a call to the hospital or the likes at least your mind will be put at ease.
Otherwise water in between feeds is fine as long as your not filling bubs up with it & she wants it. Sometimes they will take heaps & other they wont even take a mouthful so you will know if she needs extra otherwise they do get all their needs from their milk its suprising. My bubs likes to refuse all liquids on really hot days he likes to stress his mamma
Hope all is fine with your little one remember making a call or asking a question is never silly especially when it can put your mind at ease after all we just want our bubs to be happy & healthy so there is no harm in asking to make sure of this :D
Thanks guys, I feel better knowing other kids have done this too...I don't remember DS having dry nappies ever :)
I just changed her nappy again to try and wake her up to finish her bottle and it was wet...considering it was dry 30 mins before there was alot in there. Lazy girl didn't wake up tho and is now sleeping soundly, and I'm left looking at the last 60mls of her bottle.
I was thinking about her nappies today tho, and none of them were as wet as they usually are, and we were at the shops all day in the nice cool aircon. Hopefully she is back to normal tomorrow, I'd rather change lots of wet nappies than worry about her having so few.
I'm off to wash this bottle out and go to bed. Thanks again :)
Goodnight :p
Just thought I would add that as long as bub has at the minimum 4 wet nappies in 24hrs you should be fine.
Only 4 wet nappies? I always thought it was 6 in 24hours? Now I'm confused :o

Heheh ive been told both hehehe so yeah go with what is "right" for your bubs IYKWIM you will tell if bubs isnt quite her normal self or if she refuses all liquids for a day then of course id be worried otherwise she seems fine dont stress go with your mothers intuition !
I've had the same with EJ though I've found if she's been asleep and is still dry she wont always do a wee untill a few minutes after she wakes up which is usually while im in the process of checking the nappy  I was a little worried also the 1st time she was dry after so long also...

I said 4 because that is what the hospital told me when I had to take DS up their for dehydration but that is another post all together.
Definately a minimum of 4 wet nappies in 24 hours, any less get bub to the hospital.
