View Full Version : Were YOU breastfed?
I wasn't...
I was adopted at birth and the nurses gave me bottles until my wonderful parents collected me. They continued bottle feeding me but soon discovered I was lactose intolerant
A midwife told me that even adopting mothers can create a milk supply and breastfeed with some sort of hormonal treatment and a lot of persistence.
Just wondering how the rest of us were fed back then?

Breastfed for 12 months
We were all breastfed, cant remember how long for tho?
Mum sometimes annoys me,shes all like "Riley still breastfeeds for habit, hes not getting any nutrients"
Like she can talk-she fed my bro till he was 2.5yrs:laughing:
At antenatal class they told me that every generation that BFs is better for the next.So if my mum was BF,then I was, then by the time Riley was BF is was optimum milk?!Im not sure if Ive worded it right, but someone might know wht Im on about:ecomcity:

Not at all.
When I first had my daughter my mum told me her horror story of trying to b/feed me in the hospital with the midwife mashing my face into her boob and me screaming and her crying :(

I was just reading on the ABA website yesterday about this very thing.
I was breastfed but I just remembered in my first few days I was transferred to another hosp without my mother for jaundice treatment- my Mum always used to joke that during that time I was given some other mother's milk- I'm guessing I prob had formula but it was only for a day or so and then I was back to my Mum.

I was breastfed til I was 3 years old. I had Meningitis twice and was a very sick little baby, the only thing I could keep down for long periods of time was breast milk. So my Mum kept going for as long as I wanted, which the Doctors were very happy with. I self-weaned at 3 years old 2 months.

I was breastfed up until about 12 months :)
I was breastfed. A midwife at my antenatal class said something interesting. She said that breastfeeding was at its lowest in the mid 70s when I was born, because formula companies were running very successful advertising campaigns and breastfeeding wasn't encouraged as much as it could have been.
So good on you Mum for giving it a go when many others weren't.
i was breastfed for about 2 months then mum dryed up she told me i wouldnt take bottle properly for 5 days  i was a boobie monster!!

i think mum breastfed all 3 of us but i cant be certain..i do know my younger brother was lactose intolerant when he was a baby so had to go onto soy milk. he isnt lactose intolerant now though....i should ask her about it huh....

I was bottlefed - my mum suffered severe post natal depression (though at the time she was told to get on with it and look after her baby) - in her words she was a mess and just couldn't cope.
Same thing happened when my sister was born. Poor mum. :crying:

Neither my sister nor I were breastfed. My mum never got any milk with either of us so it was FF from the beginning.
I think knowing this is what helped me to be completely ok with not being able to BF ds. I had grown up happy and healthy and knew ds would be just fine.
I was breastfed until I was 2

For the formula babies who are now adults....do you think you are less intelligent, unhealthier etc. than the breastfedders ..hmmmm:p ;)

100% bottlefed:( Which is why I was more determined to breastfeed.
I was bottle fed right from the start. I agree with Snuffy's Mum that I believe knowing it didn't hurt me in any way helped me accept that it just wasn't possible to BF my kids
Mum 23 Girls - Nope I don't the formula determined my intelligence at all. In fact going through uni (early Childhood course) we had this discussion and worked out that all those who were formula fed before or at 6 weeks were at the top of their english class in school and those that were bf were at the top of their math classes. So maybe not less intelligent but maybe a different intelligence????
Mum always told me that I was a fussy drinker so she had to constatnly monitor EXACTLY how much I was drinking and the only way to do this was bottle feeding ... Mum couldn't bring herself to express so it was formula from the start. I that was the biggest thing for me having allergic and fussy drinking children myself I needed to know EXACTLY how much they drank so that I could monitor how much they threw up.
I was bf for 5 months and then put on to cow's milk. My mum wasn't bf at all so I think it's great that she did bf for some time at least. Apparently putting babies on to cow's milk and solids was just the done thing. she says she would've put me on formula if advised to, she just wasn't advised to.
i was bf untill 2, then 2 b difficult i only wanted milk spoon fed to me!

as soon as i was born i was bottle fed, my mum didnt try cause she new she was going back to work a month after i was born.
me too .. mum didn't have the luxury of maternity leave back then ... for either of us (brother was bottle fed too) .. she was given 6 weeks unpaid leave .. and was then expected back at work ..
straight to the bottle for both of us.. and I have to say .. that I highly doubt it has effected my intelligence .. my upbringing on the otherhand had a HUGE influence over my brain-usage :D

Myself and my two brothers were also fully breastfed (and my younger brother was born with 2 teeth!!) We were born between 1974-1982.
My mum never really made any issue of it, it was just something she did & it was natural & normal. It wasn't until only very recently I learned that BF was not necessarily "the norm" at this time.
My younger brother was also born in the US, which I believe had even lower rates of BF at the time.

I was a booby baby until around 6 months - mum went back to work and expressed for 3 months but I think it all got a bit much for her in the end, doing night duty with 3 kids and a moderately useless hubby (sorry Dad, but you weren't a big baby man).

Nope  No boob for me or my siblings  Mum was told (& stupidly believed) that because she had inverted nipples that she'd never be able to feed. She was very annoyed to say the least when I had an inverted nipple & could & am still bf now, almost 2 years later

Mum was quite young when she had me and said that she didnt feel comfy doing it so she didnt.

If you believe my parents, I was bottle fed a pre made formula that came in a brown glass bottle, sealed with a piece of silver foil – exactly like the way cows milk was once delivered. Apparently you dropped the glass bottle in warm water, ripped the foil off and screwed on a teat. Way back then, my folks live in an isolated area and the story goes that they ordered the stuff in by the pallet load.
Mum’s version is that this stuff was a trial product but the pre-made bottles didn’t catch on and manufactures eventually went for a powder format – which they called S26. My folks can tell a yarn… I still don’t know.
I don’t think that being bottle fed hurt me (or my two DD’s) one little bit, even if it was some trial product.
I smart and no sick, just as them uther kids.

My Mum fed me for four months, then switched to formula, she went back to work so she thought it was to hard expressing.
I was breast and bottle fed , I think ...
I was the first of my siblings to be born in London and as they were all breastfed (no other option out in the sticks), I'm sure my mum just went with what she knew. Until the "bottle is better" propaganda got to her.
I'm pretty sure I was weaned earlier than my older siblings were as she could just stick me on the bottle. She breast and bottle fed my younger brother, too and he was weaned pretty early on ... I can't really remember her breast feeding him past the squirmy baby stage.
Wow, it's interesting to see the high number of breastfed bubhubbers. Im surprised how many of our mothers breastfed actually. Because as some of you mentioned about the "bottle is best" advertising back then, I thought more of us would have been on the bottle.
My birth-mum told me that she breastfed my 2 younger half brothers. Im not sure of their IQ scores but they do seem to be pretty naturally intelligent. Perhaps a bit more than me  They probably like to think so anyway ;) Personally I don't think it makes any difference to the old grey matter.

I was breast fed until i was 5!!!!!!!!!!
My mum tryed to wean me off alot before that but i was to clingy and mum couldnt handle how upset id get.My sister who was 2 years younger than me was weaned off at 2 with no problem's, but i continued for a whole year after that.
Iam happy i had the best most healthiest start.Iam going to breast feed my little boy but probly not for that long!!!
That's a very long time
I wasn't breastfed at all.
Mum almost died just after having me (retained placenta, infection, PPH, blood transfusions etc) she was in hospital for a while - don't think she was really up to it - so I was bottlefed basically from the word go.
Nope I don't the formula determined my intelligence at all. My older bro was top of his Maths class, was going to teach in high school but got sidetracked on the way to uni
I was top of my english class and forced to do top maths - much to my disgust!!
And my little bro is only 8 but is a grade ahead of his age group...
Nope I was adopted so FF for me
breastfed until i started projectile vomitting due to dairy intolerance and the protiens coming throgh mum's milk.

i was completly bottlefed and so was my brother
my mum tried but was unable to
I wasnt as my mum had a few issues but Im healthy, never been sick so it didnt do me any harm.
I was until I was 18mths and mum was preg with my brother. I was forced to stop as they didn't know about tandem feeding. Apparently I would have gone on forever if it weren't for my brother:p
I bf'ed dd1 for 13 mths, and dd2 is still bfing at 20mths.
I'm always interested in why women bf for a little bit then switch to ff. I often wonder if they had some decent support and were given the correct knowledge then would they continue and have a successful breastfeeding relationship?
I understand some women just don't like it, but for those with attachment problems, bleeding/cracked nipples, etc would they have been able to bf had they been helped properly.
Someone in a previous post said how when they were a baby the midwife mushed her face into her mum's breast. With help like that it's no wonder people prefer to ff!
Breastfed for seven weeks then onto formula.
Hospitalised due to lactose intolerance and put on soy formula.
I have a few little allergies unfortunately. Nothing serious but I would prefer that DS didn't develop them.
Breastfeeding wasn't the in thing back then. My mum is still a bit brainwashed about the quality of my milk and that sort of thing.

No, I didn't ask her why. I was too shocked when she did tell me (only a few years ago) and then started processing all the things mum had told me over the years about me screaming 20 hours out of every 24 and not wanting to sleep. For years I carried this info thinking what a horrible baby I must have been and then when I was told about the cows milk, all I could think was, no wonder I cried and screamed all the time!

I was put onto formula after about 3 months because I screamed and cried a lot. The paeds couldn't figure out what was really wrong, so breast milk got the blame.

I feel terribly sorry for previous generations of mummies, they didnt get support, their care providers didnt know anything about BFing...it must have been so hard...

My mum bf 3/4. I was the longest, two days after my first bday when i cut my first tooth and bit! She fed me as long as she could cause i was very badly reflux and they told her it was the best thing.
My big bro was ff cause my mum had a bad bleed after he was born and the nurses put him straight onto the bottle.
My nana is very anti-bfeeding. In her day it was very much the not done thing! She always tries to bag it down. My mum found that very difficult.

Mum can't remember who she fed how (me and my brother).... one was BF to 6 months, the other to 8 months... then given some weird version of formula. It was like, mixing cows milk with sugar and watering it down or something? The doctor recommended that anyway...
I was breastfed for about 10months I just stopped on my own my sister was breastfed about 8months as she was a serial biter and gave my mum mastitis twice .. for my brother about 12 months (brother first me in middle my sister youngest)
For about 5 weeks. I hadn't regained my birth weight by then so Mum put me on the bottle.
She keeps saying how she thinks it's so amazing that I can bf when she couldn't (any of her 4 kids, she had inverted nipples, but tried hard).
Both my brother and I were breastfed beyond 12 mths of age but I am unsure of the exact age when we stopped. I was lucky to have a mum who breastfed exclusively and co slept with us.
I was BF for a bit over 18 months!!
