My 5 month old has come out in small red spots - kind of like little pimples but without the white heads - from head to toe. He's not covered in them though - there are 2 on his big toe, 2 on his heel, 1 on his tummy, 2 on his hand, 1 on his head etc. At the same time his tongue has come out in white dots and today the inner part of his lips look like they are coated in white milky substance too. Wierd!

He doesn't seem bothered by it at all. They are not pussey (sp?) or itchy to him or like a rash at all. At first I thought they were midgy bites but now there are too many of them, and they tend to appear in pairs too. The white lips concern me the most today.

He has been on Farex for about 2.5 weeks now - 1 week plain, 1 week mixed with apples and 3 days mixed with pears. The dots appeared when we started pears. I have stopped him on pears today and reverted to apples to see if that has an effect. He only has about 2 teaspoons of solids total each day BTW.

He may also be teething ! Could the dots be teething-related?? He has done some foul green poos the last couple of days too, which I was told was a teething sign. He has a top tooth that is right there but hasn't cut through yet, but you can see the white line of it appearing.

Overall he isn't too grizzly though.

Any ideas? If it still around on Wed then I'll take him to the dr's, or if he suddenly seems out of sorts or gets a fever, but so far so good on those fronts.

Thanks ladies.

I would take him to the chemist the whiteness in his mouth sounds like thrush, not sure about the spots though they may be thrush as well, this is easily fixed with an over the counter medication, good luck:) Also with the green colored poo you need to make sure that it isn't dehydration especially in this weather, as dehydration turns their poos green as well!

Yeah i think maybe a trip to the doctors may be a good thing better to be safe IMO.
Probably is thrush so you want to get on top of it asap.
The small spots sound like milk pimples but its strange he is getting them in two's but may just be by chance. Like TanUch said it may be a food allergy so keep an eye on what your giving bubs & maybe just cut back to rice cereal to see what happens.
Hopefully bubs is just freaking his mum out as they like to do ;)

Yes i agree with the others it sounds like thrush in his mouth so i would take him to the doc & find out for sure.
When Jakob had thrush in his mouth he wouldn't eat i guess it hurt to much, all he did was cry all the time & me being a first timer didn't now what it was i felt so bad for him. Good luck with it all.

Thanks girls.

We took nathan off pears and no more spots have appeared... and I had a bit of a look on the internet at thrush symptoms and that's what it sounds like for the white mouth, could be 2 things presenting themselves at the same time??

Don't think it's heat rash, he spent the last 5 days in the blissful a/con of my MIL's place!! THe coolest he's been in months!

Will go see GP about it though. Will post once we know definitely what it is. Am concerned if it is an allergic reaction to pears though... that's pretty unusual right??

Thanks for your advice.

Hi Sonia
I think that it would be very unusual, given that pears are one of the very first foods recommended for babies. I would have thought that if he had no probs with apple, pear would be fine too. I'm thinking its not related (but its a great idea to have him checked over too).

Cheers

Quick update... was oral thrush, have got him on daktarin and seems to be working. No more spots still, have been told just to keep an eye on it but think it could be anything as babies have v. sensitive skin... will leave pears for a while and retry in a few weeks.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Just to let you know the latest...

Bub has tonsilitis. Apparently the spots were a result of a virus which then developed into oral thrush, and then his poor little immune system couldn't beat it so it became a bacteria and turned into tonsilitis. Little darling is now on antibiotics and doing well, still v happy, just has a cough and a phlemy throat.

So little spots are viral! There we go!
