Hi everyone, My fiancee propsed to me last October and I was over the moone. We ended up getting a really nice ring from a shop called Secrets Shhh because they are simulated diamonds and they were a lot cheaper. They said that there was a lifetime guarantee and that they were grown in a lab but you cannot tell that they are not the real diamonds. But they still had the clarity of a real one and if you were to take it to get it tested it would say that it's a diamond.

Well I am telling you all now that this shop is in fact misleading everyone by saying this and in acutal fact they are Cubic Ziconas!!!!!!! I am so devasted and so is my partner cause he feels cheated now.

We are going to the consumer watchdog (ACCC) and we are also going to A current affairs and today tonight with this becuase people need to know. I have spoken to a few gemologists and they are furious with this company for misleading people. She even had a few tears in her eyes while I was crying cause she had to break the news to me.

Anyway I just wanted to let you all know and good luck with all the plannings.

oh Bummer Becs, that sucks

just goes to show do your reasearch before buying such things,

sucks how people tell lies like that just to get a sale, I had someone try and tell me something similar

I soon shot her down by tell her you can't make a fake diamond look reall :banghead: some people think they can pull the wool over anyones eyes

I hope you went back to the shop, and got your money back

That sucks.
It's a big reason why we got my engagement ring handmade. If you still love your ring but wnat a diamond in it now try an actual jeweller. You get a certificate with your diamond, it has its own serial number etc. and they can just replace your cz with the real thing.

JuniorMinime

well we are trying to get our money back and they can take the ring for all I care I am so mad at them at the moment.

We went to a proper jeweller and we found the perfect ring and it's real princess cut diamonds (three). We are going to bring in some of our other old jewellery and they are going to make our wedding bands out of that with diamond sand pink sapphires instead. I have to say I cried when I saw the ring though, it was beautiful.

I have to say though the jeweller we are going with is awesome and they are helping us so much. They are just as angry as we are.

I feel like such an idiot though for falling for something like that. The more people buy from them the more money they make and they more shops they open up. I just wanted people to be informed of this shop.

That makes me mad! I bought my earrings that from there that I wore for my wedding, they told me the same thing! And they weren't that cheap - especially for CZ's!

I am sorry to hear that!! I would only get a real one anyway for engagement! Anything else I actually wouldn't care if it is CZ coz I like them too..

Sorry to go against the grain but..
I always assumed that Shh! Secrets made their rings from Cubic Zirconia.. what did you think they made them out of?
It's not really that much of a shock to me..I don't think it would be to many people, really.. ;)

hmm, another thing im paranoid about... how do we know that any jewellery is real or worth what they sell it for? my ex paid $969 for my engagement ring, yet they said it was on sale and usually worth over $1600..how could they then sell it so cheap(well that much cheaper anyway)

Diamonds are just highly compressed carbon cells - you CAN actually make false diamonds in a lab and can't tell them from real diamonds. (Sorry if this grosses anyone out) but there are companies in America who can take the ashes of a loved one (which are carbon) and turn them into a diamond. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/berkshire/3389493.stm)

But it sounds like this company is an absolute scam - and unfortunately, Emevity - that's why you should always have jewellery independently valuated before buying.

I hope you get your money back, and some satisfaction from this company. Your new engagement ring sounds beautiful.

Well I got a phone call from them today and we are about to go down there with our receipts, ring and guarantee to get our money back cause we will not settle for anything else.

I am so sorry that you bought your earrings from there Kristy07 it makes me mad too.

I didn't mind the fact that they weren't real diamonds but the fact that we weren't told that they acutally cubic's makes me mader.

I'll let you all know how I get on when I get back,

I thought that I would just update you all on the ring incident.

We have take the other one back to Secrets and we ended up purchasing one from A Want For Jewellry which are unreal. Anyone in the Gold Coast area should check them out they are so helpful.

Secrets told me that there rings are not cz's they are a more advanced cz's. I told her that at the end of the day they are in fact cz's and that's what they should be telling their clients.

Anyway all is good now!! You must all think I am stupid to fall for something like that and to be so shallow. But it was more the principal for me.

I'm with you. They are simulated diamonds - that is, cibic zirconias (simulated diamonds....)

That's why their name is Secrets shhhh'. They look like diamonds but they aren't....

There is a company called Appolo diamonds (in the USA), they have created the 1st Colourless LAB GROWN Diamonds. They are made from carbon just like MINED diamonds but they are grown in the lab, these are coming out in dribs and drabs . There are other companies which make lab grown diamonds but FANCY colours.
It frustrates me to death when people confuse simulated diamonds with lab grown. Sims are Moissanite, and CZ's...
Proper Lab grown diamonds are still VERY Pricey
Takara Diamonds make lab grown fancy pinks
www.takaradiamonds.com
Apollo make colourless Lab Grown
www.apollodiamond.com
The fancy pinks are gorgeous!!
A .49 pt Fancy Blue diamond (Lab Grown) at Takara will set you back nearly $2500!!!! Thats not even half a Ct!! But still so cheap compared to mined ones!

Yeah.. I agree..I'm amazed that anyone would think they were ever real lol ;)

There IS a big difference between synthetic diamonds and CZ.. I wont go into it to much though as hippychick has above me..

Cubic zirconia is made from a mixture of high purity zirconium oxide powders stabilized with magnesium and calcium. The amount of each ingredient is carefully controlled, with certain additives sometimes being used to achieve a similar appearance to genuine diamonds.

Cultured (synthetic) Diamonds consist of the same pure carbon crystal structure as a diamond grown by nature. Starting with a diamond seed and a separate source of carbon, extreme pressures and temperatures are applied so that the carbon source transforms and grows atom-by atom and layer-by-layer on the diamond seed.

This is why I don't waste money on jewellery.
The principle of any ring doesn't differ because of the value of the ring.

Jewelery stores hike up their prices so so much...They sell low grade diamonds at huge prices...

There is such an emphasize on buying diamonds..thanks to DeBeers, 'A diamond is forever'!!!! Nice ol' catch phrase they used.
They have a big impact on the worlds diamond prices.
Once 'real' lab grown diamonds become more common, no doubt DeBeers will take a piece of the action.
Whatever your partner gives you whether its half a carat of 5 carats, whether its a diamond or a Topaz or whatever, its from the heart.....

i gotta warn dp before its too late!! its my bday next week and mothers day i hope he hasnt bought it or lay byed one!!!

im never gonna get engaged now :( we cant afford a proper ring, thats why we decided on a 'simunlated diamond'... but i dont want no cz!!!

Why don't you go for a smaller diamond say 50 pts or less..and eventually maybe for a anniversary pressie you and DP can get one that you both love... =))
A commitement to the one you love is not comparable to the size of ones ring... Love is Love

A simulated diamond is just another word for cubic zirconia. So in other words, a man made diamond.

There are heaps of other pretty coloured stones that would also look nice for your ring:yes:

That's a lovely idea. What about an opal or something? As long as it's from your partners heart that is all that matters. The ring is for you and noone else.

I am now going to have pink sapphires in my wedding band because pink is my favourite colour and sapphire is my birth stone.

Maybe you could do something like that. My friend got a ruby for her engagement ring cause that's her birth stone and then you can save up for a diamond later on like for your eternity ring maybe????

I just wanted to let people out there that didn't know about this shop because they do not say that another word for simulated diamond is cubic!! That is why I posted this thread.

I'm sorry, but Secrets have NEVER said that the stones are diamonds, infact they have always said and advertised that they sell Diamond Simulants made in a lab. Diamond Simulants and Cubic Zirconia are actually different.

The new diamond simulants are made to a hardness of 8.5 while CZ are no more than a 6 which is why they go yellow after time.

What's more, when you purchase your jewellery from Secrets you get a card explaining how they 'make' their DS. I'm sorry, but you would have to be a complete fool to think that you could buy a real diamond at those prices.......

I myself have purchased rings from Secrets and am very happy with them. I feel that I've made an environmentally friendly choice in making this purchase and would never spend 10k on a ring, just to get a 'real diamond'!!

The lab created diamonds are called moissanite or something, aren't they? Different to CZ...

As for turning cremains into one.... that's what I want done when I die :D

Your new ring sounds divine.... what I always wanted (but never got).

i was just about to post the same thing SorenLorenson, the OP never thought the diamonds were real.

Theres a big difference between a cubic and a simulated, lab grown diamond, price being one of them.

Lab growns can still set you back thousands whereas a cubic is fairly cheap.Wouldnt you like to know if you had just spent a stack on what you thought was a lab created diamond when it was just a cheap cubic you could have got a whole lot cheaper at Kleins??

I cant see why you are devastated, it says on there website exactly as you have said although it does not say anything about having them tested, it says:

to the naked eye it is impossible to distinguish from a real diamond...

Which is not a lie, they do like like diamonds.

A diamond is a diamond.
A fake is a fake.

It also states that they are made using zirconium oxide, there hardness is 8.5 whereas a diamond is 10.

I hardly think the ACCC will follow up. There web site clearly states the facts.

Besides, the websites i looked up, said that basically, a cubic zirconium is just one of the brand names used for simulated diamonds.
