My dp and i finally got engaged about 2 weeks ago after being together for 11 years. I have had to have my engagement ring resized as it was too big, so I took it back to where we bought it from thinking that they would resize it (it is being resized to a smaller size) at no charge, but no they wanted to charg me $50.00 to do it. I was quite upset with them for this and pretty much told them to stick it and I would take it elsewhere. Am I over reacting thinking that they should have done this complimentary seeing that we spent so much money in their store (it wasn't a cheap ring) or are all jewellry stores like this? I ended up taking it elsewhere to get done for half the price and I will not be going back to the store where the ring was purchased from.

You are not being unreasonable at all. THe place i bought my engagment and wedding rings does at least 1 resize free for you and cleans it free once every6 months. THey should be doing it free or at least a hell of a lot cheaper then that.
I would speak to the manager about it or complain to the head office. Thats just bad customer service. Most ring places offer a free resize.

that's what I thought too. I think I will write a complaint to head office. I even said to the lady, after the money we spent in here, I would of thought you could do it complimentary and she said no depending on how many sizes it needed resizing, it will be minimum $50.00.
It should've been free for sure. They're just taking gold out, not putting any in. I'd be complaining for sure!
$50 is a little extreme, most places charge approx $30. If you can get it done for free, you are lucky. But fact of the matter is that its not the fact that they are taking gold out, its the fact they still have to charge for the labour to do it.
If you have bought the ring from there then I think the least they can do is give you one free resizing...
Afterall, they make one hell of a profit anyway!
So IMO you did the right thing by complaining!
Good on you!
I just got a quote the other week because my ring flops all around my finger now. I got it when I was pregnant and puffy.
I took it back to the same place and got quoted $50. I was so happy I couldn't believe it was so cheap. for some reason I thought it would cost a couple of hundred.
I was happy before but after reading this I'm not!! LOL

Jewellers mark their jewellery up enough they should resize for free.

My DF and I have just recently been looking for wedding bands.... every jewellers we went to charged a fee for resizing, most were $50.00, that is even if you brought the ring from the shop.
I also thought it was a little pricey but unfortunately was something that just has to be done.

Yes they do but usually the most that is charged is what the jeweller charges them to do it, if any charge at all. Only when the ring is purchased from that shop, and then only when going down a size. I used to work in a jeweller's! They are a couple of chains that I refuse to buy from cause reps talk and you get to know what goes on behind the scenes.

I didn't have to pay for resizing with my enagagement ting. I'm planning on taking my eternity ring in next wk to be resized (I always worry and get rings made too big) so I'll let you know how I go. In regards to polishing and cleaning, it depends which jeweller I get, if it's one that knows me, no charge, but if it's one who has never dealt with me, I get charged $20.

Nope, not overreacting!
As you said when you spend so much money, to waiver $50 for a reseize should be a given!
THe jewellers where I got my engagement/wedding rings from will resize for free whenever I need it (within reason) not just once, and they clean it for free whenever I take it in.
But they are a pretty awesome jewellers!!

Thanks guys, I feel better knowing that my expectations aren't too high. I understand that they are a business, but $50.00 to a big business is nothing, it would of meant buying our wedding rings there as I had found the one that I want there, but know we won't be buying it there, so for the sake of $50.00 they have lost the sale of at least one wedding ring, makes you wonder doesn't it. I must say though that the lady who helped us on the day we purchased it, was a really lovely lady and was very helpful and not pushy, I couldn't see her when I went back and I think that she would of waived the fee fo us.
Thanks again for all your replies, and it's quite interesting to see everyones take on this, how different our expectations are.
