My DP and I are considering switching from sposies to MCN. But can only afford to buy one a fortnight/week depending. We roughly workde out how much money we will save if we were using MCN over the next two years that DS will be in nappies. Well, it halves the price. The problem is, I would only save half my money if I bought them out right ($600 full time) but obviously cant do that!
I will still be buying disposables while I am building up my stash.
Im not too big on terry flats- that is why I decided to use disposables in the first place, as I thought these were the only cloth nappies...
hmmmmm- is it worth converting? (I am putting my pocket before environmental factors:detective: )

I would think so... As remember that you can always sell them after! Cant sell a sposie!
Many places have layby which helps tremendously.
I laybyed my first lot of Baby Beehinds which was about $500. I payed about $50 each week, more if I had extra money. It took me about 7 weeks but it was well worth it.
Other people buy 1 or 2 nappies a week and gradually build up their stash.
It's hard to start with, trying to put aside just that little bit of extra money, but once you've got enough that's it, you never have to buy nappies each week:yelclap:

You could always opt for 2nd hand to start off with. Sometimes they're not even used... but the price is a fair bit off. The girls here sell them 2nd hand, and are pretty honest about the quality and whatnot. It might be a way to see what works and what doesn't too...

If you could force yourself to use flats for awhile you'd save the money even more quickly and be able to buy your MCNs sooner. They're really not that bad to use either (I like mine alot). :)

Check places like Nuture Nappies, Darlings Downunder, The Wee Wuns and Baby Soft Landings for layby. Baby Beehinds do it too... And Green Kids? Perhaps? Can always ask, anyway.
That's a great start- and stops you wasting so much $$ on postage for each little purchase

I agree with Gremily..
I'd suggest using terry flats with some good covers to start off with as they're less expensive, and then gradually pay off a laybuy of MCN. That way you get the best of both worlds.

Terry flats are also drypailed and managed just as easily as MCN, just that they don't last as long on bubs.
They could help you save for more MCN... I stopped using terry flats a couple of years ago (before starting again) because I thought that I had to soak in napisan, wash on hot, use yucky plastic pilchers, blah blah blah... now I'm finding them soooo easy, I just chuck them in the bucket with my MCN and they will always be handy for slow-drying days

Layby is good, and most nappy stores have it
I definately think it's worth it in the long run. I have two in nappies and I saved money building my stash by making them myself and the ones I did buy I have bought on sale or in trial packs. I have 7 peapods which aren't he best MCN, but they have worked well, and they are really cheap compared to other MCNs. Try them if they work for you then get more. They do require extra boosting though so grab some microfibre cleaning cloths from Big W or Kmart to stuff in them with your insert.
i have never used a terry square (for a nappy), and I never will to be honest. I am a converted sposie user. I know where you are coming from it seems like a lot of money to buy your stash but if you do it gradually you'll get there, and you'll be really glad when you do
I am building my stash slowly, getting a few second hand along the way. Its good that way anyway cos you get to try different brands.....even if you only start with a couple of nappies that you wash everyday its still saving money and it doesnt take long to build the stash up....and its fun picking different nappies.
