One of my sons came at 34wks and another one came at 28wks I had a feeling both times they would be early but I was still shocked when I had them.

With my last pregnancy I had a fluid leak at 23weeks which thankfully sealed over and stopped and I went into early stage prem labour many times which was stopped with nifidipene, IV antibiotics and steroids. She held on and made her entrance at 38wks.

I went into labour the first time at 22 weeks and then a few times again in between then and 35 when she as born so she was only 4.5 weeks early her digestive system didnt deveople enough so as far as that goes she is simaler to that of a micro prem but other that that she is okay

I know a lady from the hospistl her litle boy was born a 25 weeks he is now 6 months old and is still in hosptial as his lungs arent strong enough for home o2 but other that that he is as strong as an ox he is heavier than my 1 year old and feed on a botle completely not tube feeds and should be going home very soon

DS was born at 31 weeks 1260grams and is now a happy healthy but small 4.5 yr old

DD was only 5 weeks early and a hefty 5lb 12 ounces she is now 21 months and a happy healthy little girl

DD2 was born only 8 days before her due date but from 21 weeks I was told ány day now and spent a lot of time in hospital, they prepared me for the worst, telling me they didnt think she would live, thought she had a heart problem, showed me all the micropremmies in nicu and told me all the scary things that they thought were coming our way.. thankfully they did not and she was born close to term and a HUGE 7lb 5 ounces (was huge for me!!! )

hopefully you make it to term with no problems but if you ever want to chat just pm me and ill give you my msn!

Hi, this can be such a concern - but good luck!

I never ever thought I would have my DS2 early but he arrived at 28.5 weeks weighing in at 1.2kg and apart from being early, small and having an infection he's a beautiful 15month old (12 mths corrected). We were in care for 8 weeks and have done well ever since we got home. He's full of smiles and meeting his milestones slowly but determinedly! Up to crawling and cruising furniture at the minute - the kids into everything!

Take care, take naps and don't let yourself get rundown (I think I didn't do these things and that started my early labour!)

My son was born at 33 weeks. I had PROM (Premature Rupture Of Membranes) from 30 weeks though, and spent the 3 weeks in hospital until he was born.

My DD was born at 34wks due to hind leak of waters - no idea what caused it but could've been due to the fact I was still working and walking to and from the train station about half hour walk (20mins when not pregnant).

She was born weighing 2.53kg so a good size. I was admitted to hospital on the Tuesday night and had her on the Saturday morning. I had steroid injections to help her lungs develop but she was born without any issues. Just had a bit of fun getting the breastfeeding down pact.

Now she's 14mths old and outweighs all the babies we know around her age - she's about 12kg.

I'm going to give you a very short version of my story.

I had my son Tyler at 27 weeks. I started bleeding on Wednesday morning, the doctors knew I was going to have my baby any day so I was given the steriod injections and on Friday morning was transfered to Liverpool hospital. Started having contractions on the way and was given medication to stop contractions (didn't work) Then early Saturday morning my son was born.He wasn't breathing so the nurses had to take him away.

Was told by the Specialist that he wasn't going to live more then 24 hours and to say our good-byes, but thankfully he did pull through.

He spent close to 3 mths in hospital due to alot of health problems. He's now a happy 2yr old little boy.He is slightly developmentally delayed in some areas but I'm just happy that he's still with us.

I hope that you make it to full term with your little buddle of joy :fingerscrossed:

Hi mothertobein2007, Hang in there. It is a scary concept if you think you are going to have your baby early. I have identical twins who had twin to twin transfusion and I didn't know from day to day if we would have 1, 2 or no babies. What I did know was that I would have them early, most likely between 30 - 34 weeks. I went and had a tour of the Special care nursery at the hospital where I was going to deliver the boys and they were great.

I had them at 32 weeks and Matthew was 1.3 kg and Ben was 1.8 Kg at birth. Matthew went to NICU for about 6 days. Both boys spent 5 weeks in hospital and so far are doing really well.

The best advice anyone can give you is make sure you rest and do as much research as you can to prepare yourself for a premmie baby. The medical technology of today is amazing. The odds of survival get better daily. At the moment each day your baby is inside you is better. Once you reach 33 weeks you can go by weeks.

28 weekers do very well and it all depends on the care they get immediately after birth.

If you would like to talk in more detail or you wish to pick my brain please pm me and I'll be more than happy to talk things over with you. It is a daunting and overwhelming feeling to think about having premmie and unless you've been there, you really don't understand.

I hope your little one decides to stay warm and cosy inside his liitle home and that his entrance into the world is one of only joy.

Good luck and let us know how you go.

My Twin girls were born 11 weeks ealry but weighing 1.3kg and 1.4kg which is very very good for 11 week premmie twins.
They are now 4 weeks old and gaining lots and lots of weight :D but still have a long way to go.
I had a feeling i was going to go ealry and i was right.

GOOD LUCK with the rest of your pregnancy

My first baby was 7 weeks early. I went into labour at 32 weeks, they stopped it for a week and steroid-loaded him but then my waters broke at 33 weeks and there was no stopping him. He was healthy when he was born but had to stay in special care for 5 weeks because he had no suck reflex and had to be tube-fed. With this pregnancy I am currently 34 weeks and 5 days and have been in pre-labour since friday. I went into early labour at 31 weeks but they managed to stop it and steroid-load bub. I'm ready to have this one now but I would rather it wait to at least 36 weeks. :fingerscrossed:

wow! I hope you hold out til 36 weeks or beyond! Goodluck!

my two were steroid loaded too, I think they must make a huge difference as ds came out breathing fine even at 31 weeks which really surprised me

I've had 2 early ones. My eldest 5 weeks early and weighing 5pd 3oz. I had haemorraging with her and 2 days later my waters broke and went into spontaneous labour. She stayed in hospital for 2 weeks but only because she got transfered at 8 days old from brisbane to our local hospital and had to go into issolation incase she brought back and infection with her. She didn't need any oxygen or tube feeding but she did have a problem with her sucking reflex and I had to put her on the bottle. She's 10 years old now and nearly as tall as me and has a ladies size 7 shoe.
My other early bub was different in the fact that I felt I was going to go early (not sure why.. I was quite stressed though and had just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes) My waters started leaking at 33weeks 6days and they gave me steroids. I stayed in hospital with no contractions but they didn't want to induce me if they didn't have to. I had to have blood tests every 2 days to make sure I wasn't getting any infections but at 34weeks 4days I got an infection in the membranes and had to be induced. My ds was born a nice 4 pd 12oz with no need for oxygen. He had to go on a sugar drip though and had to be on monitors for a week. He was also tube fed due to his lack of sucking reflex and had phototherapy for his jaundis (sorry don't know how to spell that one) He left hospital at 2 and half weeks and is now 3 months old. And doing brilliantly!
One thing I didn't realise (which sounds silly as he was my 5th child) is I was having tightenings a little like when you have your periods. Just along the bottom of my belly. I had them for about 2 or 3 weeks before my waters leaked and as it turns out... that was a sign that I may go into labour early. And silly me just thinking it was part of my pregnancy.. didn't slow down which made all the above happen (apparently) :ecomcity: Listen to me ramble on like a good sort. I'll stop now but I hope all goes well with you darling and take it easy at least until 35 weeks so your baby gets nice and big. :) I'll just add aswell that usually an early baby may be able to go home at 37 weeks gestation depending on how he/she has coped since being born and weight gain, feeding etc.. Good luck sweetie

My DD was born at 29 weeks, which was very unexpected. She weighed 1.5kg, which was quite heavy for a premmie at her stage.

She spent 1 - 2 weeks in NICU then the next 5 weeks in Special care. She got to come home on Christmas Eve in 2004, it was the best Christmas present. She was still so tiny but she is now a healthy 2.5 year old.

I am currently 23 weeks pregnant and am already nervous hoping that it doesn't happen again. I really want to enjoy a full pregnancy but is he does decide to come early atleast I know what to expect this time.

Hi guys,
I know how stressful it is when your baby/babies arrive too early. My first set of twins b/b were delivered due to complications by cs at 34 weeks. They were 1.8kg and 2.2kg when born and spent 2 weeks in nicu and another 2 weeks in scn. They are now very healthy and active 4yr old boys.
My 2nd set of twins g/g were born by cs at 36 weeks weighing 2.5kg and 2.2kg. They were a lot better and only went to scn for about 2 weeks. I spent a month in hospital resting before I had them though due to high BP. That was very hard on my b/b twins and DH.
My advice is rest as much as poss, don't stress about things and just set small milestones for you to reach and take everyhting a day at a time. Goodluck!!

Hi, just wanted to let you all know that I had my baby early. What a shock!!! lol. He was 5 weeks early, so not as early as my last one. I had him on Anzac Day, hey at least he gets a public holiday on his birthday every year. He's still in hospital, being tube-fed and probably won't be home for another week or so  . Fingers crossed he's home quickly.

I just watched it too, god premmies have some many similarities but your DS could have easily passed as my DS's twin in all the hospital pics!! Even beyond he just looks so similar to him. What a gorgeous strong little man! He was 20grams lighter than my DS at birth but my ds was born at 31 weeks.

Just having a teary now having watched that, so glad I got to see it! Did you go on to have your daughter at term?

peta1410- you know whats really strange, i had my dd anzac day 2 years ago adn she was 5 weeks early too!!!!!.
my son was also a premmie born @ 32 weeks. labour started @30 weeks.
this pregnancy i have been in labour 2 times so far. once at 24 weeks, once at 26. and i have had a high tear in the amniotic sac from 30 weeks too. but he is still in there cooking and will be here in about 2 weeks!!!!! im currently 38 weeks atm.
so just goes to show that even if you have 2 other premmies it doenst necessarily mean that the third will be (as long as you have some really good doctors helping you along the way!!!)
and someone said they had their baby in liverpool hospital!!! i had both of mine there, and will have this one there. i cant praise the neonatal nurses and doctors enough. they are great people, and do wonderful things for such small people!!!!!

It does make me scared to have another one because I'm worried about having a third prem. What if the next one was even earlier than my 33 weeker? I thought 5 weeks in hospital was bad enough, I couldn't imagine how emotional it would be to have a 28 weeker. And now going through it again I'm an emotional wreck with no one to talk to about how I'm feeling (except you guys of course) and it's only been just over a week!!! And the drs tell me I'll be lucky to get him home by next weekend and that I could be looking at another 2 weeks. I feel so sad :gloomy: and it's not a "baby blues" thing, it's that my baby is in the hospital and not here with me. I'm consumed with guilt because it's my stupid body that won't keep them in. My placenta was starting to dry out when he was born so they said that I just probably can't carry a baby to full-term. And so here's another baby that I can't breastfeed because I have an allergic reaction to breastpumps, something else for me to feel guilty about. The abundance of milk I'm producing doesn't help things either. God, listen to me feeling sorry for myself. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have you girls to vent to. does anyone know of a counselling service for mums with prems? I feel I really need to talk to someone before I explode! Sorry to totally change the direction of this thread, I probably should've started a new one.

I can point you in the direction of a prem webgroup if you are interested. PM me if you want the details.

I am yet to find a counsellor that specialises in prem issues. I found everyone expected me to be ok because my baby was alive. But it is hard leaving them time and again and not having your baby with you all the time. Whether it's 1 week or months that they are in hospital it seems like forever. If you want to chat or anything feel free to contact me. Or vent in here. It helps to get it out. I bottled it up for ages and it made it much worse.

Mummy Charmzy - I had my girl at term.:smiliedance: After 2 prems it was great she was a big 7lb 9oz.

my third was my first fulltermer too... 38w6d and a MASSIVE 7lb 5 ounces or 3350grams!! I never knew I could have a baby so big!!!!!!!!!! (and boy carrying a baby that big was a lot different to 2 and 5lb babies lol I felt EVERY ounce!!)

Hi

I hope everything is going well. I had my twins at 31wks due to a reverse flow on Twin 2. We were actually faced with the choice of delivery immediately at 28wks or trying to nurse through a bit longer under some fairly intense monitoring and actually got another 3wks. T1 (Taea) was 1860gms and T2 (Bailey) was 1385gms. We were in hospital for 27 days.

I noticed that there are a few graduates of Liverpool Hospital. We were there too and without Dr Smolenic of FMU I very much doubt that we would still have Bailey with us so I'm eternally grateful.

Having a prem is a long term impact on your family and the further you can get the less likelyhood of major complications. Having said that I believe that the universe never dishes out more than you can handle, it just seems like you can't at times.

Hi, I am currently 23 weeks and i have a feeling I have a slow leak (in my waters that is :)) I was just wondering, does there have to be much fluid? Mine is very little, but it's still worrying.

I called my ObGyn and he is seeing me this friday, his nurse thinks it's my bladder leaking due to my pelvic floor muscles, but i don't.

mum2my4
09-05-2007, 18:20
Yes it can be a small leak, this happened to me at 23 wks and I went straight to the hospital, they can test the fluid and know if it's amniotic fluid or not. I was put on bedrest for a few days in hospital and the leak sealed over.

At that gestation I would not hesitate to get it checked out.

:hugs: Hope it's nothing, but get it checked.

Hi Shajake

My two are doing fantastically well now. Bailey (T2) is still quite small and has been delayed with some of his milestones (didn't walk until he was 17mths) but he is going great guns now so life is certainly interesting with 2 19mth olds running around (and I do mean run  ).

I think it can be quite hard for people who haven't had exposure to prems to realise that the demands don't end the day you leave hospital. With Bailey we were having physio in addition to normal paed visits, hospital assessments etc.

How are your beautiful boys going?

Shajbm

Hi Double Delight,

You're so right about it not ending when you leave hospital. My boys are doing well I think.

I'm having their hearing tested next Thursday because I'm a bit concerned about Matthew(T2) but I'm hoping that it's nothing to be worried about and they are still small. Having them weighed on Monday so will see.

I still worry that they're not eating enough but they seem happy enough.

DS#1 didn't walk till he was 16 months so Bailey's not that far behind.
