Hi

Has anyone found NAN causes constipation? We have been using it since birth and bubs has had terrible constipation issues. Our GP said "some kids are just like that" and recommended we give him parachoc which is a laxative. As soon as I stop the parachoc he gets constipated again so I thought as a last option trying a different formula as I vaguely remember someone saying at some stage about NAN giving their bub constipation and so we changed and he hasn't had parachoc for a week or been constipated for this time either.

Has anyone else found this?

I use Nan gold for my ds and its been great, but i found that with S26 it made both my kids very blocked up, so mabie try a different brand of formula. Good luck.

i put my dd on formula at 10mths for various reasons, and i chose the nan2gold. from about the second day she started having terrible constipation, and has only just started to come good now at almost 13 mths because she is on solids, and not having as much of the formula, i have also been giving her half formula/half normal milk as she is now over 12 mths. i wish i had never done it, poor tilly :(

When DS was little(r) I had him on Nan and it clogged him terribly.
Our only solution was to change formula and try something else.

S26 has worked for us; but all babies are different. It's trial and error really.

Just a quick note to say that pear is really good in relieving constipation.

Hi

I was reccomended Nan because it didn't cause constipation but found that it did exactly that with my son. The chemist suggested S26 Alpha Pro and I tried it and three weeks later he now poos every day!!!!!!! Hooray : ) I agree that it is trial and error...

I also make sure he gets plenty of water when its hot and give lots of pureed vegies and fruit. I found that Farex and baby porridge only made the problem worse so I eased off these when he got bad. Another thing that seems to be helping is yoghurt - I have been giving a table spoon of Jalna Biodynamic natural yoghurt once a day. I found the quickest thing to get everything moving along was to add a teaspoon of stewed prunes to the dinner vegies and it worked nearly every time. Sometimes it would take two nights.... but I haven't had to give prunes since I changed formula.

Hope this helps....

We use NAN and it's great, not a hard poo insight, I found Heinz gave my boy constipation something chronic, but then others I know think it's great.
Anyhoo, What I'm saying is every brand is good, but our bubs all seem to react differently to diff brands so what suits one bub doesnt neccessarily suit the other.

I reckon your GP saying some bubs are just like that was a a bit of a cop out!!!
Every mum I know with a formula fed bub has dealt with constipation at some stage and some fruit, like pear or if neccessary a change or formula usually does the trick.
P.S. Some brands are higher in Iron than others, which can clog bubs up more too.

I used Nan Gold because the hospital gave that to my DD. It didn't cause her constipation but she cried and screamed when she did her poo EVERYTIME :(
A CHN recommended switching to S26 Lactose-free and she got a bit better. We changed to S26 Gold as we thought Gold is better than regular formulas and she didn't seem to be lactose intolerant.

I heard from some people S26 causes constipation but every bub is different. What works for your friend's bub might not work with yours so it's a matter of trial and error. If you find a formula that works with your bub, I suggest stick to it and don't keep changing it. Switching formulas regularly will mess your bub's tummy and it's just too much hassle.

I started bottlefeeding both my bubs at 2 months old. The first time I tried S26 and she got so constipated we ended up taking her to casualty because she started vomiting (just what you wanted to hear right). Heinz Prune juice watered down with some boiled water in a bottle got her going.

I then moved to NAN GOLD and although the poo was really smelly and green. She wasnt constipated again.

So, when Jack come along I went straight to NAN Gold, had the same smelly, green poo again, but no constipation. When he was about 4 months I tried Nan 1 and the poo is not so smelly and no constipation.

I agree that it is the individual baby. It is very worrying though, because each formula takes time to kick in. Just for peace of mind, I suggest more natural methods like prune juice or pears inbetween trying new formulas.

Good Luck

Thanks ladies. Its good to know we aren't the only ones. I never clicked to it being the formula because its what the hospital recommended but after an excellent diet, plenty of water and no other possible explanation, it looks like thats exactly what it was for my lad.

As I said, hes been off it now for a week (we are using the Heinz Nurture now) and no issues anymore. No crying, no screaming, no hard poo and no need for laxatives!...which just does seem wrong for a 1 year old to constantly need.

As it clogs up some and not others I guess it really does depend on the individual. :-)

Merry Xmas to you all

Annsam, there was another thread recently where someone said S26 was notorious for constipation and a whole pile of mums said they had no problems with it, so it really does sound like different formulas work better with different babies. Good to hear you aren't having any problems anymore. ;)

TanUch, I don't know why you insist on being so argumentative, but I'm not one bit interested in arguing with you.

That comment has nothing to do with this thread. If you want to check, I think you'll find it's true.. something to do with altering the lining of their stomach. I don't make half-cocked assumptions. I research.

Merry Christmas, TanUch. Enjoy your shopping.

tanuch, what the? sorry but you were just nitpicking for no reason. cosmic was simply trying to point out that whilst one formula may cause constipation in one bub, another may be perfectly fine on it. i dont understand how you can possibly find something in her post to have a go at her about?
formula usually causes constipation in babies full stop. some brands will simply be kinder to one bubs tummy than others, it is sometimes a trial and error thing, i dont understand how something so simple can give you cause to have a go at poor cecil? please dont write another argumentitive post, this time probably aimed at me, if you have something to share regarding what formula is best to avoid constipation in little ones, then great, if not, then just leave it, personal attacks are not on!!! (poor cecil :( )

If you don't agree with someone thats fine, but PLEASE stop these personal attacks!!!!!!

I, for one, am sick of reading your posts attacking someone elses opinion. Can you stick to the topic of the thread?

Annsam - I'm sorry this has nothing to do with your thread but I think I need to respond to Tanuch, and I'd rather do it here than in a PM so that others can see where I was coming from.

Tanuch, perhaps if you were annoyed at my question you could have responded in the other thread and I could have clarified for you.

I can't speak for Erin, Kaidensmum or Sopoli but would like to say that I don't use that smiley to show I'm being sarcastic. Before it was called the 'sarcastic' smiley it was called the 'rolleyes' smiley but I've always thought it looked like someone thinking. I use the smileys for the facial expressions they represent, not the meaning given to them by bubhub. They are the closest thing to facial expressions we've got so I try to use them to convey my meaning better! Not to offend people!!

I was not being one bit sarcastic when I asked about breastmilk not being enough for babies. Whatever you may think about me and the fact that I don't have kids, I do a LOT of research to prepare myself for what is ahead - more than most pregnant women I know. I am passionate about breastfeeding and when someone says some babies are not satisfied with just bm, I genuinely want to know if it's true and why so that I can be prepared if that happens to me.

Again, I hope that clarifies.

ladies, I think you should mind your own business. Cosmic and I have had our issues in the past and I feel this is between me and her, not any of you.

TanUch, if this is the case, perhaps it would be better if you and Cosmic had your "issues" via PM. If you feel we should all butt out...wouldn't it be better to keep this behind closed doors, so to speak? If its on a public forum, its open fodder for conversation, and its unrealistic to expect members of the forum to ignore it.

That being said, we all have the right to an opinion...but keep it nice please. I doubt we would all speak to each other this way face to face.

I use s26 gold and have never found a problem. Also a wee tip is to put a tiny bit of extra water in eth bottle when making it up. I don't mean lots but say instead of 240, put 245mls. I find that always relieves things a little. If you don't like doing that make sure they have some cooled boiled water during the day. Also my friend uses very weak, cooled chamomile tea (baby is 5 months) and that works too. x

Enough is enough!
I am really sick of reading the nitpicking and I'm sure many other people are too.
Please just leave it be!
There is a lot of room for misinterpretation on a forum such as this and I think if you have a problem with a comment on another thread please send a PM about it and don't use another persons thread to address it.
If anyone has a problem please PM me or one of the other mods.
Smile and have a lovely day.
