A soaker is a knitted cover to be used over a fitted nappy or another nappy that needs a cover (eg flat, prefold).
This is dd2 in a Baby Beehinds Wrap (http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q9/gremily1/100_8661.jpg) . Same deal as a soaker, except it fits like a PUL cover.

A few soakers/woollies we use (http://picasaweb.google.com/mychildrensmother/KnitNap)

Wool is amazing! It can hold about 30% of its own weight in moisture. Its a natural breathable and very effective cover over any nappy that is not waterproof. We use fitteds and wool full time.

Gorgeous pic gremily!

ETA - They are most ideal at night and you don't need many as they are easy care - needing washing only every 6 weeks unless soiled. Just air out between wears. I have a lot cos i knit and collect.

Lanolising is when lanolin is added to the wool- usually by soaking the soaker in water that's had pure lanolin dissolved in it or by using a sprayable lanolin. Wool has lanolin in it to begin with to protect the skin of the sheep, but it is removed when wool is treated ready to sell. Putting it back in makes the soaker water resistant and self-cleaning. Means very little washing, just airing between uses.

stripy soaker cutie! (http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m312/pookiesossige/PICT3930.jpg)

Ariene's first soaker 2 (http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m312/pookiesossige/PICT3914.jpg)

Little short ones (sooo cute!) are called shorties, and pants ones (fantastic for winter nights) are called longies.

Hope that helps a little!!
