afternoon ladies,
just a quick question, eli has had his babybeehinds hemp on for the last week and hes just come up with the worst nappy rash, its really angry red with blistering that was bleeding last change, i felt so bad for the little one! im not sure whats caused it my first thought was the hemp nappies! he has them on most of the time, few fitteds and a couple of GK but mostly the hemps..could it be the hemp? has anyone had a reaction like that before?
im using his cream that was prescribed to me for his dermatitus ages ago, so far its not working.
any help would be fab

What sort of detergent do use and how much?
Maybe he is reacting to the hemp? Was the cream you're putting on prescribed for nappy rash, if not maybe that's why it's not working?

I have my son in hemp & bamboos and to tell the truth the only time he's had nappy rash was from a disposable- and even then it was only cause his Mum let him go back to sleep in the morning and he'd done a poo so that burnt him.

I alternated between Sudocream and Gaia Natural Baby Skin Soothing Lotion at nappy changes and that worked pretty quickly to clear it up.

i use frontloader spree powerder no detergent and i use a little less than a third of a scoop, the cream was prescribed for the dermatitus which started out the same way this is atm, so im not sure what to do really, ive heard the sudocream does work wonders, i just feel so bad for the little petal

My experience with nappy rash is that it relates to the foods being eaten more often than the nappy itself.
Is bub on solids yet? Is he breastfed or bottle fed? If breastfed consider what you've been eating.

Dermatitis is often food related too. Take a look at Sue Dengates website for more info.

give the Sudocream a go- it can't hurt, mine has all come from Bounty bags- the sample size pot, but I don't think it's very expensive and it does last a long time.

Do you know what triggered the dermatitis last time?

i think honestly it was stress, because my milk supply went to bugger all and i didnt realise, so he wasnt getting enough food so he screamed day and night from hunger, which would have caused alot of stress on him, we spent a week in hospital where i made the decision once i knew i had nothing to give to put him on the bottle...

in relation to the food comment, i just gave him his first lot of rice cereal today because his milk wasnt filling him up, he would want to be fed every two hours! downing almost 400 mills in 4 hours! plus he wasnt sleeping...i never got more than 40 mins out of him during the day...hes now been asleep for 2 hours! after his rice cereal and a bottle...i never thought it could happen!

I don't rely on over the counter creams to solve rash problems anymore - spent too much trying to solve rash with them once before, and in the end, got it wrong.

my 2 experiences (mostly using hemp or cotton nappies) is that it could be a contact dermatitis - residue of detergent reacting with wee and burning the skin - use less or different detergent. If the nappies smell soapy or you can see bubbles at the end of the final rinse, do an extra rinse to get detergent residue out completely. the other thing is it could be a bacterial infection, which will need GP attention to diagnose and work out how to treat. If it goes on much longer, and reducing detergent and the creams you are currently trying don't help, I would def. see a gp.

are you using liners? don't use creams without liners. and liners will also be soft against his sensitive skin and keep irritants away a bit better.

Silk liners work wonders for nappy rash. The silk has sericin (sp) which has healing properties, plus they're totally natural. They'd be worth getting a few to have on hand for times like this. You can get them on line from a few places (Baby Soft Landings, Nuture Nappies, Sustainable Hemp Products, etc). Pretty cheap but wonderful.

Simmons Pawpaw salve is great (not the lucas' pawpaw which is petroleum based). Simmons is oil based and allows air to circulate through.

Nappy free time is essential aswell. As much as you can!

My SIL has had this exact prob (I think, could have it a bit wrong) with her BBH;s and has given up on them for now.
If I were you- I'd wash them in hot water with no detergent and a bit of bicarb, and a very hot, good rinse. Could be build up/residue issues.. I don't have any hemp nappies though, so I'm not really a fountain of information for you about this, sorry!!
