Hi ladies

Really hope you can help me make some sort of decision. DH and I started talking about moving to oz in Janurary - as you usually do when it's dark miserable and wet. Decided couldn't take my daughter away from her cousin and nanny/gramps so stopped thinking about it.

So sitting in coffee shop yesterday with Sis whose about to give birth to her second and she announces that her and dh and ds are thinking of moving abroad for a couple of years in order to affors to move to a bigger house in our home town - mad eh gotta move a abroad to get a little more cash for one extra bedroom!

As you can imagine I then spill my guts about our dilema a few moths back. Anyway to cut to the chase we both went away agreeing to think more about it and then if were up for it would speak to nanny and gramps about coming with us!

So before we launch into the visa application process and job hunting can any of you Perth ladies tell me what is fab about living in or around Perth.

Particularly interested in knowing:-
nice area to bring up child by 5min walk from beach

How many months is the heat unbearable for

What time is the latest it gets dark

Are the critters really that scary

Should I stop stressing about the sharks (dh is a surfer)

Have you got any links to good estate agents for Perth

Sorry so long but as you've all probably gone through, gotta eel the decision is at least a little informed when made!!

Thanks so much to anyone who can help

Sara

Near to Perth - Scarborough, City Beach, Cottesloe - all of those areas can be quite pricey though. Further from Perth - South - Rockingham (Safety Bay, Warnbro), or north - Hillarys, Mindarie

How many months is the heat unbearable for
I'm one of those people who live for summer so I'd say never!!! Seriously - the last 2 summers have only had about 5 days maximum that has been over 40

What time is the latest it gets dark
Depends - we're in the middle of having daylight saving trial for 3years at the moment (for referendum in 2009). During daylight saving it gets dark round 8.30pm, during non daylight saving it gets dark round 7.30pm
Are the critters really that scary
No - but I guess that's a tricky one to answer if we don't know what you've been told
Should I stop stressing about the sharks (dh is a surfer)
Yes - the number of shark attacks over the years is miniscule - we spend heaps of time at the beaches and most beaches have never had a shark spotted at them
Have you got any links to good estate agents for Perth

More than happy to talk more- I'm very biased about living in Perth. (Well I live about 35min east of Perth in the hills on half an acre of bush). Let me know if you have more questions.

ok i lived in perth as a kid but i dont like going to perth much now due to the heat but if your thinking of any part of WA. i live in Albany and it is beautiful, not too hot and a great place for kids to grow up.

Particularly interested in knowing:-
nice area to bring up child by 5min walk from beach middleton or emu point. but most of albany is 5 - 10minutes from beautiful beaches

How many months is the heat unbearable for. an odd hot day here in there in december and january

What time is the latest it gets dark 6.30when daylight saving isnt in effect end of april to beginning of december. and 9pm when its daylight saving dec - march

Are the critters really that scary
no

Should I stop stressing about the sharks (dh is a surfer). yes as there are sharks anywhere. i think perth would be worst then albany

Have you got any links to good estate agents for Perth - use realestate.com.au

Hi there
I am originally from Wales and lived in Perth for a year or two before venturing further north.

I think that Perth is a lovely city. There are lots of new suburbs being built both north and south of the city...Ocean Reef, Burns Beach, Brighton, Butler are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head.

The heat isn't that bad at all. In fact there are some days in winter where it is positively chilly!! THe first year will probably seem hot to you but after spending a whole year here and warming up to summer temperatures as such it is very pleasant. It is rare that Perth becomes unbearably hot.

The critters - depends how you meet them! They are certainly a lot BIGGER than most critters that we had in Wales and if you have a phobia about critters then, yes they are a bit scary. However, you get used to them quickly.

Not sure about dark in Perth as we are much much further north.

realestate.com.au has huge selection of houses for sale and rent.

WA is lovely and a great place to live...but we are bound to say that as we are a little bit biased!

Good luck in making your decision.

Hi there,

How are you getting on with your decsion making???

I have been here now for 3 months, but have been here on holiday a couple of times before.

Places 5 mins walk to the beach are Secret Harbour plus all the ones mentioned above, and also, Madora, Mandurah, Golden Bay, Coogee all south of the river and as such more affordable just now(maybe except Coogee).

I was addicted to Realestate com au before we got here. Great site.

Have found some critters, but not that scary. Found redbacks and a whitetailed spider (dont let one of them bite ya!!!)

I like each place equally as was from lovely area in england - new forest. It's worth giving it a go in my opinion certainly of you think you can get into same position in england if you decide to go back. I gave up a well paid job which i'll never get back if we ever went back so that is hard, but that's the only thing.

We will build up to where we were over there, not all our money will be gone, you can go back remember.

Family i do miss, for my son more than for me. I miss the grandparent closeness he got. So much. I do miss the cold. I do miss the nursery my son went to and i miss my salary (but not the job - didnt like that except the kudos)

Big decision, but my dad put it into good terms. Get the visa granted. Just apply. You have 5 years to make the big move and it's worth every bit of the $$$$ fee to apply just to have that option under your belt for those 5 years. It's like buying yourself a getaway ticket for when you've had enough and decide to brave it.

Good luck to you!!!

Janine x:)
