hey there,

i am just about due to have my first baby and have been very busy making fitted cloth nappies. i have made a heap of newborn size ones, but they don't have gussets, and am just wondering whether people have found them to leak?

i suspect, but have no way of really knowing until baby comes that, that baby will be tall like dad, which seems to me to mean their legs will be thinner - and i'm wondering whether that means i need to put gussets on?

i have made two with gussets, but bought the wrong elastic and am worried they will rub baby - also they are a pain in the bum! so i'd rather not add them if i don't need to, but if i do there's no point in making more until i have the right elastic???

on another note, i am also wondering about the versatility of adjustable patterns - are they better? because i suspect the newborn size ones will not fit for very long...

any advice would be appreciated!

cheers, vanessa

My bub was 4kg when he was born but still had really skinny little legs so I found gussets to be vital, especially to contain his explosive breastfed poos! Looking back at photos, he didn't really chub up around the thighs till he was a couple of months old.

Re newborn sizing, personally I wouldn't bother with tiny newborn sizes because they grow so fast. I just used a combo of smalls and terry flats on my bub at birth, the smalls were a bit big on him at first, but not for long!!!

It really depends on the size of your bub, but if your bub is really small and you don't have any 'newborn' MCNs, you could just use terry flats till they grow into the small size.

I've cloth nappied 4 bubs, and to be honest, didn't bother with gussets. We didn't have that many blowouts and mainly used our terry flats and newborn fitteds with no covers during the day.

Having a couple of nappy's with gussets can be handy. Often baby's get into a pattern of timing with their pooping so you can use the gusset nappy's for the times baby will "usually" do a poop. I'm doing that with liners at the moment, use flushable liners on poop day at the time baby usually does a poop, especially if I'm out of the house. It's easy to predict now

Thanks all, looks like I better get some FOE and make a few with gussetts just in case....
