ok, so I have finished my first knitting project, a baby bib, and am quiete proud of myself lol...

Looking at a simple soaker pattern, it starts by saying knit rib, what is that??

alternating knit and purl stitches. I like 2 x 2 rib which is knit 2, purl 2.

can you also tell me what this mean?

Starting with row 51, decrease 2 stitches every row until you have 27 stitches left.

does that mean I increase one on each end of the row?

decrease 2 stitches every row - so yes, knit 2 stitches together at the end of every row until 27 stitches remain.

Knit 2 together at the beginning and end of each row, to decrease 2 on each row ;)

Sounds like the Alice :)

thanks, yes thats what I am looking at, do you think its a good one to start with?

and when it comes to the increasing one stitch per row, do you do that at the beginning or end of the row?

I just finished knitting a pair of Alice soakers and while I butchered the ribbing they aren't too bad for my first knitting attempt (even if I do say so myself!).

About increasing - I found it easier to increase on the knit row rather than the pearl row. I seemed to be left with a hole when I tried it on the pearl row :detective: .

I like to slip one over rather than knitting them together.

yeah, I just had the same problem with the whole, so just did two on the knit row. Tell me how did you attach it together?? using wool? and a big needle?

Yep just sewed down each side with some wool and a needle - I got a pack of two 'wool needles' from Kmart for $0.59.
What are you supposed to wash wool soakers (100% wool)?? Can I just chuck them in the washing machine or do i use wool wash. I'm not precious about them but I don't want to wreck them. Will they shrink?

I would hand wash in warm water with shampoo, then you need to lanolise I believe

did you do the crochet around the legs?

No I gave the crochet a miss but DS has pretty chunky legs and they seem to look Ok without it. DS wore them today and I haven't lanolised and they stayed dry.
