Well I made some nappies for my new little nephew.

They are one layer microfleece on outside and terry inner with a extra terry layer sew into wet zone and a two layer terry flip out booster.

They fit him perfectly (he's 2 weeks old:D ) and they also fit his big sister (2.5yrs old:eek: )

So it got me thinking. For my bubba I want to do the same. (because one layer of fleece is all a little bot-bot needs) and I'll make PUL covers to use over it later, when it wet's more heavily.

Do you think it's a good idea??????

Also..........I want to use my new bamboo fabric for the booster instead of the terry. How many layers would I use???
should I make extra boosters for later?(that I can just place under the other for night)

Do you think that the single fleece nappy will work with a PUL cover when bub gets older?????

TIA ladies

It'll be interesting to see the thoughts of others.
I have just finished a nappy for my DS that is sort of an AIO. It has two layers of polar fleecea layer of flannel then a layer of polar fleece again(next to babies bot) and I have sewn in a soaker consisting of 3 layers of bamboo and 2 of microfibre. So I will let you know how it turns out in the next few days.

what kind of nappies are you making, pockets, AIO or fitteds?

it's a fitted with a fold out booster.

To be honest I don't see why you'd want microfleece as the outer, if you are going to cover it up with PUL later. I'd just be making a terry nappy.

As far as absorbency goes, what you've used would be fine for a little tacker, but you might like a bit more absorbency for an older bub.

I agree, if it's a fitted I woudn't put microfleece on the outside. You can get some really cute $4.99 per metre flanellete from spotlight you could put on the outside if you want a cute print for now.

Then I'd to the rest terry, but maybe you could put a few layers of hemp in there somewhere, like just in the wet zone?

For fitteds to be honest I like hemp or bamboo with flannel on the outside and something nice on the inside to keep babies bum dryer.

But for a newborns it might be better to use the cheaper fabrics like terry because they will grow out of them quickly, and then use hemp and bamboo from about 3 months plus I guess. Not sure, I didn't switch til my bubs were older so I really don't know

I like at least a minimum of 6 layers of hemp up to 9. Probably 4 - 6 layers of bamboo in the wet zone :)

If you are making one size nappies why not make pockets, and then you can change the absorbent layers as bub grows, and you can still cut up your terry squares to use to stuff them too.

Or you could do sherpa nappies, Spotlight has stuff called cotton rich fleece in really pretty baby colours that would make great fitted nappies.

Does this make sense?

I thought a layer of microfleece would be waterproof for a little tike, so I don't need a cover until it's older. I was thinking of just putting PUL on the outer, but then everyone says it doesn't last that long. So that's why I would make the extra covers??

they are OSFA, so would be worn from go to whoa, would PUL last the whole time??? should I scrap the microfleece????

Also if I make extra boosters (to add for an older bub) how many layers of bamboo would I use??

thanks for the advice so far!!

Microfleece won't really make it waterproof, it's too thin. PUL would last long enough for a little tike, and how long it lasts depends on how you care for it, and how many nappies you have.

I would scrap the microfleece, it won't stand up to constant wear any better than PUL in fact it would start to go very pilly in a short while.

I wouldn't use anymore than 3 layers of anything or they'll take forever to dry.

I think it would be hard to find any fabric that will last from newborn to TT, depending on the stash size of course. In terms of saving money you would probably save more money making less nappies for your stash in different sizes. Eg 12 - 24 for a newborn fitteds made from terry and with wool covers, then making the same amount from 3 months to TT size with PUL or high quality fleece like Malden Mills Windpro. No ordinary fleece will last long because of the pilling and it just doesn't wash well.

To make boosters that dry make them fold up, I'd say 2-3 layers that fold up to 6-9 of hemp.

Do you think I should just make them OSFA (I really like the OSFA) terry with bamboo booster and make the cover seperate (instead of attatching it)??

Then I can make sized covers out of PUL, that way my nappies will last and I'll just use different sized covers through out???

sorry, my brain is very mushy today:o just trying to make-up my mind what I want to make :o

Thanks for all the imput so far ladies!!

yes that makes more sense to make fitteds instead of sort of fitteds IYKWIM
