Sunrise channel 7 this morning ran a short discussion on homebirth with Editor of Marie Claire and a radio show guy (their names escape me). They were discussing "should women in Australia have the choice to have funded homebirth like the proposal in UK?" I was excited to see this topic on discussion but then horrified as Editor of Marie Claire (female, mother) starts passionately saying "NO! Birth is DANGEROUS. Anything can happen - mothers DIE, babies DIE and it happens in a second and this is just a cost-saving exercise. All obstetricians say homebirth is dangerous and if you want a natural birth - go to the birth centre". The guy was in complete agreement and raved on similarly.

HORRIFIED I was!

So I went to the channel 7 soapbox and emailed them. Feel free to go there yourself if you like and make some informed comment about homebirth.

I know Claire I saw it too and was mortified beyond belief...but not surprised (since Sunrise is always such a reliable source of informed comment  ).

It was downright irresponsible and ignorant.
Hopefully they will cop enough abuse today that they will put someone on tomorrow who knows what they're talking about to repair some of the damage they've done

What damage???

Its two people and there opinions.. which they are 100% entitled to..
Just cos there opinion isn't also your opinion doesn't mean its wrong..

Yeah I though, well everyone is going to come back with statistics so I wrote to them about my 2 birth centre births and how I only JUST made it in time (I mean within minutes) and then proceeed to try and bleed to death on them, which is what would have happened if it had have happened in the car.
Then how at my beautiful homebirth, I didn't have to "go" anywhere and my midwives were with me and I didn't even have a problem with bleeding afterwards. If I had have, I had synto sitting in my fridge for a few weeks before bub was born.

No it doesn't mean they are wrong because it's not my opinion - of course it doesn't ;)

What they said was damaging because it was scaremongering and none of it was based on facts.
There were pregnant women watching that this morning who may be wanting a homebirth and are now doubting whether it is a safe option.
Statistically, for a low risk pregnancy homebirth IS as safe as a hospital.
That is why that segment was damaging.

well..... if you want to look at things statistically they ARE wrong..:o and that is why it's not my opinion:detective:
surely you can see that spreading a message that is incorrect and ignorant is not a 'good thing'
and yes of course people are entitled to have ignorant opinions, but that doesn't mean they should air them on television as fact.

I agree with Yasmeena. This sunrise thing was biased, and not based on evidence or reality. It is disgustingly bad journalism, and is one of the reasons why I avoid shows like that :barf:

watched it this morning, the 'response'...still not good enough imo.

The definition of 'High Risk' needs to be explored. I become considered 'High Risk' if I attempt to birth in a hospital. At home I am extremely low risk, as I birth big babies and dont even tear, when I just stay put in my own environment.

I've emailed them again. The dangers of hospital birth need to be shouted from the roof tops!!!

Good on you Becca! I had the pleasure of not seeing it (love living without telly :)) but from what I have heard around the traps it was a pretty crappy presentation. Sunrise turns the phrase "journalistic integrity" into an oxymoron all by its self.
