I haven't had a preconception visit with the doc (or a ob/gyn) yet.

I don't know whether you're supposed to do this before you start TTC....

What's the go - doctor only or ob/gyn that you're going to see throughout your pregnancy?

Thanks!

There is really no real need to go to see a GP before you TTC unless you have a history of something that your worried about ect or you want you and your partner to have blood tests beforehand...

Other than that I would say no. I went to my GP thinking that i should have a pre-consult too and that's what he told me. Unless your worried there is no need.

You'll need to go when you are pg though for a blood test ect but before that i wouldn't stress too much hun.

I didn't have a preconception visit, because I wasn't planning on conceiving.:o

I think if I had any current medical conditions I would see a doctor first.

I actually visited my GP last to get on the pill again, then me and DF decided to try for a baby as it was the right time and I fell pregnant and then I was scared to go back to him again so we chose another GP lol

I think if you have questions or what ever it is worthwhile going to a doctor first, some GPs recommend seeing one first if say you are overweight or have any pre existing medical conditions (or so I have read anyway!).

Otherwise go for it  Then once u do conceive you will need to go to your GP for a referral to a OB or hospital etc and they may also conduct bloodtests and will answer any other questions you have!

Good luck :)

i reckon make sure yr up to date with pap smears and so on.

i went along and had the bloods analysed - for the usual stuff (STDs etc)- they read out what i could have tested and I said - "look just do the lot". i assume they even tested for pre-diabetes and so on.

they give you a speil about folate - meant to be taken 3 months before up the duff.

personally i reckon it's worth a go. if you havent had any of those tests once you are up the duff they ask about them anyway. some of the viruses (STDs_) i think can be harmful to babe.

I went to my GP when I was thinking about TTC. I hadn't had AF for about 2 years at all and I was on no form of contrception. Was using the withdrawl method actually.

I had a pap smear which was all normal and then the GP referred me to an OB/Gyn. I had an ultrasound done to have a look at my insides and all was normal. Basically he told me there was no reason I shouldn't be menstruating.

I took it into my own hands after that, read a lot of books and started taking Elevit and Chaste Berry.

I felt that I may be a bit underweight (45kgs) so I put on 5 kgs by eating large amounts of junk food (I find it difficult to gain weight).

I got AF about 6 weeks later so perhaps it was a weight issue. (first AF in 2 years)

After the AF finished I was examining my cervical mucous and after a couple of weeks I suspected I was ovulating. Did a ovulation stick test and it was positive. Went and had sex.

Pregnancy test 2 weeks later and it was positive.

I think it was a complete fluke as that was the last time I EVER had sex with the (now) ex. (Thank heavens for that!)

I did go to my GP before we started trying. Dr went through a few things, had a Papsmear, breast examination and had a blood test for all the normal things. The blood test did show that I had no imunity to German Measals. They thought that was quite strange as I had it as a child and I am sure all high school girls get the vaxination. Anyway I got the vacine and had to wait a month before starting to try again. Just for my piece of mind I had a second blood test to confirm that I now have the iminity.

I guess it depends on who your Dr is and what they think you should be checked for. I did see another Dr to get the German Measals injection and she said she would not have even thought to test for German Measals as everyone should have had the injection in high school. I guess it is something to think about.

I went to the doc a while before we started trying - to get myself checked for immunity to rubella (german measles). I had already had a pap smear and checks for STDs done a few years back before I got married so I didn't worry about that.

I think it's worth getting the rubella check done so you can be immunised if you need it. And since we're lucky enough to access this kind of preconception care, why not do it.

But saying that, millions of mums give birth to healthy babies in countries without access to all these checks.

Oh yes - since I wasn't preggers this month I took the opportunity to have my teeth checked and xrayed. That's because if you get a cavity during pregnancy you can't get an xray (and personally I wouldn't even have lidocaine).

good luck!

my doc and OB both got me to get a blood test for rubella (german measles) before TTC.

Apparantly, while all girls get it in high school, the vaccination doesnt always take (this happened to a friend of my mums) so you should always get this checked before ttc as its easy to catch it and can do terrible things to your bub during pregnancy.

I went and saw my gp before we tried to fall pg, just to have a pap smear, talk about the medication I was taking and I guess just touch base, as it was really unchartered waters for me.....

Oh and she also checked my ovaries (and that was the beginning of losing my dignity  )....

Hi ladies,

I am in the stage of pre TTC.

My partner and i decided that we wanted to start to TTC? So i went to my local doctor for the regular blood test.

Came back that i wasnt immune to rubella or chicken pox.

I have had my rubella, and my first course of chicken pox vaccine - and in 6 weeks will be having my booster!.

Then I have to wait 3 months before TTC.

I think that it is a good idea to have these check ups, as now - i wont have to worry so much about being around someone with chicken pox, and also no having to worry to much about not being immune.

I went for one after reading on Bubhub about getting a blood test to ensure your rubella immunity is up to scratch, which I think is worth doing, as others have said.
