View Full Version : Constipation
Ok... anyone have any natural therapies to try?
Drinking water and ensuring there is enough fibre in my diet dont seem to be working. Things have 'slowed down' a bit :o and Im feeling almost constantly uncomfortable and I think slight constipation may be the reason. I cant believe Im typing this, although I know I shouldnt be embarrased...
get some pear juice from the supermarket. its the one in the tin goulburn valley brand. Works wonders.
You can also take metamucil or i used to eat lots of licorice:D

Try having oats for breakfast plus lots of fruit and veg through out the day. Also going for a walk is supposed to get things moving. I have found the metimucill tablets do nothing and neither does prune juice.
Hope your feeling better soon, it's horrid I know. :hugs:

I TRIED EVERYTHING.
Prunes didn't even work for me.
I went to the hospital and the doctor gave me some suppository's which worked within 10 minutes!
I was so relieved!

I actually have a mix of Soy & Linseed bran, Oats and Wheet Flakes for breakfast every day (and have done so for at least a year) and I eat a far bit of vegies and the recomended amount of fruit every day... I also go to the gym 4 times a week (not walking though - does that matter?)
Im not totally 'clogged' :o IYKWIM and I have never really been truely 'normal' as far as I know... but things still function. Ive just noticed things are a bit worse lately and Im figuring Pregnancy may have something to do with it... Im only 3 months... hate to think what I will be like in another 3+!

 That does not sound pleasant - I think Id rather stay like this!
are you still taking iron tablets? If so you can stop them after 12 weeks then you wont get so bad:thumbsup:

As zada said, an overload of iron causes constipation, I stopped taking my evaliate? or what every the hell that pregnancy supplement is called, I just took Folic acide tablets everyday. Which is all you really need after 12 weeks along.
Im not taking Irom supplaments as such (never did) I do however take Blackmores Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Gold which does contain a little. I feel better (mentally!) taking them so dont wish to stop.
i take elevit and don't suffer from constipation, so i wouldn't say its the pg supps causing it maybe just being pg:). you really need to keep taking your supps as they help keep you and bubba healthy and give you increased energy too.
try increasing your foods with high fibre and your green vege update. Something else that helps too as when I in my 20s i suffered from constipation a bit and my naturopath recommended to have a fresh green juice everyday eg celery, cucumber, spinach and apple with some mint or ginger. This really worked well in conjunction with exercise and more vegs for me as all those metamucil type things didn't work.
Hope it all passes soon :)

Hi Nicole, had a newsletter from my health shop last week which suggested 'psylum(sp*) husk is natures colon broom' any way it's supposed to help & is prob the main ingredient in metamucil.
But you could try dates , prunes, prune juice (daily), less bread, exercise ( a must for slow bowel and yes walking is exellent for this prob) & vegies soup with beans, peas barley etc.
Sorry to say but this could get worse as preg progreses. (I did) less room , slower digestion & relaxing hormones slow the whole process, so what ever works stick to it cause it'll prob. last til the end:o

Hi There,
I too have had a bit of constipation here and there in the last few weeks. It's horrible. I know it's pretty well known but I find eating a handful of pitted prunes (6 or 7), with a high fible brekky is like a wonder treatment for me. After I eat them I try to spend a bit of time standing so and a little while after I eat them (1 hour + ) have a warm to hot peppermint tea or other herbal non-milky tea. The warm liquid always helps to get things moving. While I am standing drinking the tea I focus on breathing and relaxing and I always seem to get an urge to 'go'. It seems to work very well for me.
Gee it is a little embarassing talking about it but if it helps someone else overcome this little annoyance then thats great!

I got majorly constipated earlier on in my pregnancy due to the iron in the elevit I was taking. I went to the chemist and they gave me a different brand to try which had the iron in a different form so maybe you could see if there is something else you can take?
Another thing I read ages ago (not sure how much credit there is in it) is when your sitting on the toilet to lean right forward and sort of put your head between your knees and your chest on your thigh's.. Know what I mean? Anyway apparently it helps to 'open' you colon or something to make it easier for it to come out. Sorry if tmi! I do it anyway. It's not as though anyone see's me and if they do, well it's their fault for looking!
I had a glass of metamucil everyday. It worked wonderfully!

Re psyllium husks.... if you are putting them in food rather than water, you DEFINITELY need to also have a big glass of water with it, as they need it to absorb, otherwise youwill bind things up more.
A good quick fix to get rid of existing blocakge while waiting fordietary changes to work, is to get some glycerol suppositories fromthe chemist. They're about $5 a pack, and you insert one, wait 15 - 30 mins (if you can hold out that long even! LOL) and it basically helps you go. You don't suddently lose control or anything, but you will get a definite urge to go and things down there will have started to get loose enough to pass easily.
These are supposed to be OK right though a pregnancy, as they don't have a laxative effect and so will not bring on premature labour if you are in your third trimester.
I had the same problem, pains, cramping due to constipation:(, generally feeling blocked up. I am 17 weeks pregnant. I was drinking lots of water & having fiber in my diet but nothing seemed to work until I tried All Bran a few weeks ago for breaky and mayb in the afternoon and a little late nite snack. I have it with cornflakes and milk. I am now going to the toilet at least once if not twice a day....pain free. It is working for me:cloud9:.

I find the best thing is caffine, but might not be apropriate for everyone. A strong tea does the trick.(Nodoz is even better lol). Also putting your feet up on something while your on the toilet. A small rubbish bin like most people have in their toilets is perfect.
