:fingerscrossed:  :fingerscrossed:
Have you tried asking her about it, and trying to find out why she feels she needs to hold it in? Maybe she is afraid to poo for some reason? She is not in pain at all? Would she be receptive to you trying to coach her through relaxing herself to poo? How about massaging her lower back when you know she needs to go... Hmmm tough one... I hope you get some positive progress soon :hugs: pooing problems are no fun.

The DD of a friend of mine went through something similar. She'd had a period of bad constipation and for weeks and months afterwards my friend had all sorts of dramas trying to get her daughter to do a poo.
Her doctor prescribed some gentle laxatives for the girl that she took for about 6 weeks. That sounds like a long time, but it took that long for the girl to get used to the fact that poos don't hurt anymore.
Maybe that could help with your DD?

 my son now 16 mths was like that from when he started eating solids. the gps etc said use laxatives then try prune juice.:shame: but both extract the goodness and dehydrate bub. so my health nurse said medication can make the bowel lazy and the child too. to give more fibre like wholemeal bread, wholemeal saladas etc. And to drink plenty of water. its the same for us. too much fruit gives them the squirts  (sorry) and they dehydrate. so give it ago. my son goes every day at the worst every 2nd day and doesnt strain or tear etc. :fingerscrossed: hope that helps let me know plz. Jo

Weetbix are high in fibre too.
I'm toilet training my little man (he's 3 at end of May - better late than never) and he's too scared to let go (wee or poo) when he's on the toilet and screams blue murder! He's getting so much better now and it's only been a few days. Your daughter will just get used to going once she ups her fibre intake. All the best.
Well she has been doing so well but the last week the POO problem has come back :fingerscrossed: its only temperary. Its just so frustrating:banghead:

The super market should have it my safeway does (near the oats or porridge). if not your health food shop will have it :)
Storm just has trouble, she has a great diet, lots of fruit and vegies and she is regular but she screams when she goes...she is ok on the inside too, we just find if we keep her bowels soft then we dont have this problem. I used to give her prune juice but it went straight through her and was messy, the wheatgerm just keeps things normal :)
Its great in mashed potato too or you can put it in smoothies as well if you use a blender i even use it myself i feel the need too :o Wheathearts is good too but not as effective :)

Make sure if you're increasing her fibre intake that you also increase how much she drinks, or it can have the reverse effect!
My DD has a shocking constipation problem and is on a laxative that doesn't make the bowel lazy (some do), doesn't get absorbed by the body and is safe to take long term. It's available over the counter at the chemist - PM me if you want its name.
Good luck - it's not fun

My DD had the same problem for 2 years. It started when she went on solids and formula at 6 months.
Warning - TMI!!!
She would hold onto her poos, then because she was holding on, they would get hard and she couldnt push them out. Her poo was hard and thicker than the size of her bum hole and I had to help pull it out.
It used to kill me because she was in so much pain and I couldnt help her.
I asked different doctors, different people, everyone I could. They all said the same thing, more fibre, more fluids, etc.
Finally I got referred to a paediatrician (sp?) and he said to put her on Parachoc for 6 weeks straight.
So every morning after breakfast we would have a special milkshake (parachoc) and her poos got better.
After 6 weeks we stopped the parachoc and no more constipation. Two years later and still no constipation.
I definately recommend the Parachoc.

I was going to say that too.
But before self medicating (or child medicating) you should be finding out waht the actual problem is. I would start by having a Continence Assessment done. There are Continence Nurse Specialists at hospitals and in the community as well.
Continence Nurses deal with incontinence (both urine and faeces AND constipation).
It could be any number of causes from diet, to mechanical (a problem with nerve stimulation and muscle reaction), functional (a problem with the structure of the bowel that is making it difficult to pass motions) to psychological.
You could get started with the Continence Foundation of Australia's Helpline on 1800 33 00 66.
Hope you find an answer and things go better soon

Hi, my boy suffered exactly the same way but maybe even more extreme. He would hold on for 2 weeks sometimes. By then we would need to use an enema. Often he would tear. Laxitives never worked, I tried everything in his diet which sometimes worked tempoarily, but then straight back to constipation. He had acupuncture for a while which did work but became too traumatic just to go there. For him it's definitely psychological. He's quite clingy and shy, always wanting mum and hates changes. He turned 3 in march and around december seemed to be a bit better, then his big sister had to go to hospital to have a tonsilectomy and when she came home, the extra attention to her turned him back immediately. Kids in this way do have to learn for themselves somehow, I find trying to develop his confidence, making him feel secure, doing things that he enjoys can keep him in the right mood. I try not to take him to too many new places in one week or not to meet too many new people in one week. He likes routine and stabilitly and slow introductions to new things. Your child may not be like this, but may have something else particular about her personality. Have you just stopped breast feeding or had some other change? Also, they can pick up on your anxiety so don't make it a huge problem for you or it will turn into a huge problem for her. As far as giving something temporarily I just had to continually change little remedies as he would get used to them. The Chinese herbs where quite powerful. Massaging the belly in a clockwize direction. Bowen, there's loads of things that may or may not work, you just have to try, along with working on the psychological. Sorry for my babbling, it's been a long battle for us so I can sympathize deeply. Good luck!

We had dd go through various tests as well US and scans etc dye injected into her back passage to see if there were any problems all come back all clear though my gp told me we needed to keep her bowels soft...she offered medication but boosting her fibre was more preferable for me and when it worked it was a bonus :D Thankfully its worked for us though...and mentioned by tea lady make sure she keeps her fluids up too :) forgot to mention that but luckily for us she is always drinking either milk or water so we are lucky she does it naturally
I used to cry with her when she used to say poos mum my bum hurt..broke my heart but thank goodness we dont have that anymore

You're right that most people don't understand. I stopped telling people the full story because I was getting sick of being judged or told to put him back on the laxitives. Sometimes when my mum was over and saw that there was a struggle going on, I would even lie and say 'oh he did a poo yesterday, he's probably just got a bit left over that he didn't finish getting out'. When really he'd been pushing for days and nothing was happening. I got exhausted talking about it.

DD1 went through this but (as someone mentioned earlier), she'd hold it in for so long that it would get so hard and so big she could hardly push it out!
She'd scream in pain, and no joke I dont' blame her... her poo would be ATLEAST adult size.... poor thing!!
The only thing I done for her, is gave her plenty of water and fresh fruit and vege.... I tried making a time every two days atleast (same times) to let her sit on the toilet for atleast 10 minutes, read books, sing songs etc etc, and eventually she'd do a poo and it became more regular.... she eventually grew out of the worst of it.... now she 'avoids' going to the toilet but holding it in , but generally it doesn't last long and she's on there... she just doesn't wanna stop playing!!
Wheatgerm is a great idea tho!

:hugs: know how you feel hun, so many of us do, it's just so awful to see them in pain like that :( I give my boy unprocessed bran on his weeties every morning (99 cents a bag for home brand near the porridge in Coles), and i cut out banana and potatoes for a while, they made it SO much worse!!
Worse case scenario i would use Parachoc medicine, this works a treat as it greases up their toosheys so they can go pain free (sorry TMI!).
Also, a warm bath relaxes their bottom muscles so they are prompted to go a little more comfortably. Ash always ends up pooing in the bath a few minutes after he's in there, not great to clean up but whatever works!! Good luck at the docs hun :fingerscrossed:
