Has anyone else come across this. My son is 4mth old on Thursday and for the last 2 weeks he has changed from pooing in just about every nappy and after every feed to only one poo every 3-4 days! He did have a cold 2 weeks ago and I gave him a small dose of panadol on the first day, although, I'm not sure if he even swollowed any of it as he kept gagging and spitting it out! Someone told me that could have clogged him up. HOWEVER, it has kept happening since then. He is entirely breastfed. I have tried to give him little drinks of boiled water to up his fluid intake as we are in Nrth Qld and it is very hot. I thought he might be a bit dehidrated, but it's not making any difference. Yesterday was the 4th day with no poo and thankfully he did one (huge-overflowed the nappy:eek: ). No poos today. Wondering if this is normal????

Hi,

My bub was the exact opposite for the first four months he would do one poo once a week (which filled 5 or 6 nappies  ) but then he changed after 4 months to doing a poo every day! I wouldnt worry unless he appears distressed/constipated, just check it out at your doctors but if his content and happy I wouldnt worry too much.

This is very normal..
My DS went through the exact same thing and thinking back it was probably around the 4 month mark as well... He actually went up to a week without having a poo... I spoke to my child health nurse and she said the fully breastfed babies can go 10 - 14 days without a poo... I dont think the panadol has anything to do with it, but I could be wrong..

As long as your son is having wet nappies and is still happy and alert then I wouldn't worry...

Good luck

Not sure Nedsmum, but if it's any help, I googled this:

Constipation is defined as the passage of hard, pellet-like stools that cause pain or bleeding (groaning or straining is normal) and not so much by how often your baby has a bowel movement. Keep in mind that some breast fed babies only have one bowel movement each week or two after they are 3-4 weeks old.

So perhaps it's normal? If he is still having plenty of wet nappies, probably not a problem. But I'm sure someone with more experience can tell you more. :)

oh look, the more experienced mummies beat me to it! :p

Hi,
its funny you mention this.. as i just had the midwife come to my house today (as part of the extended midwifery service) after i just had my bub 12 days ago.

she brought up that exact topic.. and reminded me that never worry , that your baby can go a whole week without pooing IF its an exclusively breastfed baby.

Bubs can have "pooey" nappy EVERY nappy change or once in a week. like i said.. exclusivly breastfed bub.

Just what i was told today ..

Thanks heaps, I feel much better now and won't worry as much. He is having heaps of wet nappies and doesn't seem to be distressed.....:)

Yup, anything is normal with a fully breastfed bub:) My firstborn used to poo every 10-14 days at first:eek: Was great! LOL

My Ds went through the exact same thing at the same age. He would only poo every 7-9 days. It was great! There was no concern as he was fully BF. As soon as I introduced solids at 7mths he went back to pooing twice a day(bummer!)
If your baby is BF as the others have said it is normal and no concern
