Hmmm I'm not sure if you could do an AIO with flannelette on the outside without a waterproofing layer such as PUL hidden underneath it, and you can't buy that at Spotlight.

What if you had the flannelette as the inner, with a fleece on the outer (this would work as an AIO as it is water resistant).

But what could you sew into it.... I think it would be bulky with plain old terry.... hmm not sure.

Maybe you could make a fitted out of terry, with the flannelette on the outside?

Making an AIO without something super-absorbant such as hemp or bamboo would be extrememly bulky I think....

Hi Flick,

ozclothnappies has some great links to sewing forums which would have answers for you too - also I'm sure I've seen a pattern link with instructions for making a flannel aio... In the USA birdseye cotton and sherpa are popular cotton alternatives to hemp and bamboo. Not as absorbant or trim, but quick drying. You might find these at lindcraft? Also you'd need your velcro - but make sure it is a durable kind! Polyester thread, not cotton. Elastic - look for swimmers elastic or lastin as they won't deteoriate in the damp environment of a nappy.

If your heart is set on the flannel outside, then you will definitely need to think about the waterproofing issue. Maybe post a question on one of those sewing forums?

I think you only need about 45cmx45cm for a nappy?

You could then have your flannel on the outside, then the PUL, then towelling maybe for the inner and absorbancy?

Well Flick....How did you get on?

I am currently searching for sage coloured PUL if anyone sees any - all the websites I know of are sold out or very expensive.

Cheers

I ended up ordering it form a site in the US - works out $16 per metre with postage but will take 7 -10 days to get here. If anyone wants the site PM me - very cheap!

2 layers of ripstop ylon works better for waterproofing and doesn't add too much bulk

In my expereience, I found ripstop to be almost utterly useless (but that was with 1 layer)... But i found a polyester cotton blend from spotlight that is water resistant, with a fleece outer - it works quite good, even for overnight use...
