Not sure if I am posting in the right place but here goes
I've just joined the fitness first down the road from me. I've never been a memeber of a gym before so I am quite nervous!
First question is: What do I wear? I dont want to be one of those fancy la de dah girls that dresses up for the gym but dont want to look out of place either.
Second question is how do I know if I will cope with the class? I dont want to join in a class and then not be able to cope with it. I'm very very very unfit!!

Thanks

Shorts or yoga pants and a loose, stretchy T-shirt.

I'd recommend cotton and jersey, not lycra.

Classes are generally pretty full-on (at least, they were in the gym I went to) - I'd suggest doing some cardio training on the bike / treadmill for a week or two before getting into classes.

They're *excellent* motivation once you get into them, though. You'll push yourself far harder in a group than you will alone, and getting to the end of a class with a bunch of people is a lot more exhilarating than just completing a solo session.

You could wear shorts and t-shirt/singlet or gym tights, I wouldn't go track pants, to hot!

You could have a word with your instructor and let him/her know that you haven't trained much and to take it easy on you.

Good Luck and I hope you enjoy it:D

Hey hun

Congrats on joining a gym :yelclap:

It can be very daunting for the first time. Just remember that it was everyone elses first time at some stage too.

Best clothes to wear is something comfortable to you. I used to wear my trackies and a singlet top. You want to wear cotton as it absorbs sweat.

Put your hair up out of your face and off your neck to keep you cool...and please dont wear makeup cause it causes blocked pores (yes most women wear makeup  ).

Just remember you are there to improve your fitness not to win people over...so get out there and kick some flabby butt.

Just enjoy it...you meet lots of great people at the gym. Oh and dont be afraid to ask for help. I found that the scariest looking muscle guys at the gym are more than happy to help spot you with the weights or offer advice :D

 GOOD LUCK !!!

I agree with what everyone has said on what to wear.

I started classes straight up...I hate working out on my own. I had some fitness before starting though. Ask the people behind the desk what classes are best for beginners. There's also usually a high and low impact choice in each class....stick to low impact if that's all you can do. Don't over exhaust yourself....push yourself certainly, but don't over do it. No one is judging you on your fitness level and you look far more stupid if you faint than if you go at your own pace! There is a girl in one of the classes I do who has fainted 3 times from over doing it. People just shake her head at her.....no one comments at all about the people knowing their limits and building their fitness level at their own pace.

And don't wear make-up! It looks gross when it's all streaky from sweat! Only a few women wear make-up to my gym. I'm not one of them and I don't have nice skin but I'm at the gym, we all look like beetroots at the end anyway!

I wear three quarter pants and a tank top/singlet top. In the end comfort is the main issue, oh and if the pants fit properly you don't want to be spending most of the time pulling them up!

I'd definitely recommend starting out by doing some cardio by yourself, even for a month or two just to get your fitness level up.

Goodluck with it all! You've made a great decision by joining up :smiliedance:
