View Full Version : Breastfed Bub & Wind

So everyone keeps telling me that BF bubs shouldn't get wind if they're attached & feeding properly. Is it just my bub then??!

I can assure you, he is perfectly attached and feeding well (having had one before who wouldn't, I know for sure that DS is!) but he still has huge issues with wind!

And when he's feeding, I can hear him gulping down air - even DH has commented that he can hear it! I think what he's doing is breathing in through his nose and then swallowing at the same time, resulting in him swallowing air as well as milk.

I would like to ask the ever helpful bubhub community, does/has anyone else had this problem and what can I do about it? I've tried massaging him to get the air up, moving his legs, burping him more regularly and in every position imaginable, placing him to sleep with his top half slightly elevated - nothing is working! I don't really want to give him drops from the chemist yet if I can avoid it.

I'm desperate to find a solution though, as it is keeping him from sleeping properly.

Well no one gave my kids the memo that they should never have developed wind or reflux or anything like that as they are/were breastfed.

When I feed I actually lay back so that the milk isn't just running down their throat - I found that to help alot. Hopefully it works for you:fingerscrossed:

You attach bub as per normal then lay down on your back;) or recline as far back as you can so bub is on top of the breast.

Oh wow! I'd never have thought of that. I'm not sure whether or not I'll be able to do that successfully (having large boobs, I pretty much have to remain completely still once he is attached or the weight of my breast can pull it from his mouth), but it's worth a try!

If you find your breasts are getting in the way try to lean back far enough until bub is sucking upwards instead then.

I heard that all the time to but my lil man aways got wind...
I always thought they got wind from gulping in air not from what kind of milk they drank...

I believe the theory is that BF bubs if they are properly attached shouldn't be able to ingest air. I guess someone forgot that they can breath through their noses too.....!

That was just a minor forgotten detail I am guessing - fools:rolleyes:

I suppose breastfed babies don't burp or fart either as they don't get wind!

Natalie has plenty of wind (and farting) issues, has had from day one, especially first thing in the morning when there is a lot of milk. The laying back trick so she sucks upwards works, but doesn't necessarily stop the wind issue. What about hiccups? Natalie gets them at least once a day, sometimes more, and I find the only way to get rid of them is to feed her again!!

When I was in hospital when bub was firstborn he got the hiccups everyday pretty much. One night he got them so bad I asked the midwife how I could get rid of them and she said the only wayto get rid of them in bubs is to give them more to drink.

I've never once heard that theory and to me that is quite untrue IMO. Both my girls as newborns got wind and they were both breastfeed and attached properly.

I suggest doing what's Oscar'smum said to do as I done this as well. Do you have a recliner? If so, use it

my girls got wind.
btw congrats i musta missed that you had your baby!!!
for me i think it was that i had a fast flow/strong letdown and they were gulping to get the milk, so they got some wind.
my favourite things for wind were burping them just by lying them down and then sitting them up.
massaging the tum in the way of the guts ( sorry intestine???:p )
warm baths
baby massage
cycling legs
waiting until they get bigger and can handle their milk better:o

Ooh yep I love my recliner to lean back and feed on! But I didn't have a recliner when Ozzy was younger so just had to make do with a pillow and the lounge chair and laying back.

Thanks! :)

And thanks for the tips too. I have actually tried all the methods you've listed and have had little success. For some reason he is still having trouble getting rid of the wind. Last night it was causing him a great deal of discomfort to the point where he was full on crying (he's not been a crier so far at all!) The best thing I've found is a warm bath, which helps to calm him down more than anything.

I guess I may just have to wait it out & try your last point there meme! ;)

Also thanks to everyone else who suggested lying back a bit to feed him. I gave it a go, but it wasn't very comfortable for me (I ended up having to hold him awkwardly) and DS didn't seem comfortable either - he wouldn't stay attached. Perhaps I just went about it all wrong?!!

DS never got the memo either. He had wind.

He doesn't now though. I can't remember the last time I burped him. I sorta just forgot about it!

DS got terrible wind and he is still bf, and was a feeding machine - attached perfectly.

The problem was that he couldn't fart very well, so couldn't release any trapped wind.

I cut out nearly everything from my diet in an attempt to fix it.

In the end it turned out he just doesn't handle lactose too well - he's still on lactose free milk. I had to drink lactose free milk while he was exclusively feeding.

The thing that fixed it though, was expressing a little of the foremilk before some of the feeds (about 10-20ml), just hand expressed into the sink. The foremilk contains more lactose, so doing this he got less lactose. He got enough fluids because he fed so much - every 3hrs round the clock for the first year because he refused solids until he was 13months.

I have the same prob with my dd. My breasts are very big and full and I have heaps of milk so I can also hear my dd gulping- cause it just comes out so fast.

I was told to express a little milk into a tissue or something just before feeding so that I'm not so full and it doesn't come out so fast, but I was also told that doing this will make them poo straight away- and I have found this to be true. Every time I expressed a little my dd didn't get wind but she had a poo explosion that came through all layers of clothing- so it depends on whether you want the wind or the cleaning up!!! That's if your bub has the same reaction.
