Hi,
How much sleep should a 10week old be getting. dd sleeps 2hrs in the morning, 3 to 4 hrs in the afternoon, then 8 to 9 hrs straight at night. Is that enough or to much sleep?
Thanks.... E:p

I have a feed/wake/sleep cycle with my bubs.
Generally at 10 weeks he was feeding every 3 hours during the day ( from 7am till 10pm). He would stay awake for about 1 hour, including the feed and then go for a sleep until the next feed. So a total of about 10 hours during the day.
He would sleep after his wake time from the 7pm feed ( roughly 8pm) till about7am the next morning. I would wake him for a roll over feed ( no wake time) at about 10pm. So at night he would be doing about 8.5 hours without a wake time for the 10pm feed.
Babies need lots of sleep as this is where they process all the information they have experinced during wake times. They generally go through a pattern of deep sleep then light sleep...each one roughly lasting 40 mins- this becomes longer as they get older.
As my bubs has gotten older his wake times have became longer and so his feeding times spaced out more. ( He is 3 months and we are feeding roughly every 3.5 hours).
Hope this helped.

Sounds normal to me. So long as he's happy and bright and well hydrated, he's getting enough for him. There aren't actually rules about how long a child must sleep, just an optimal sleep pattern for them. :)

I agree with JanetF i was often confused & had trouble with my bubs due to him not being "normal" & sleeping like most babies with the awake feed play sleep pattern in the end we just followed a routine that suited him after all we just wanted him to be happy ! Especially as the first 8wks being hellish & i rather think now it was us trying to get him to conform oh wells we know better next time hehe !
Bubs was often awake for long periods & that made him happier as he was a very alert baby yes we would look for the tired signs etc but he wasnt put down to sleep unless he was ready. So if your bubs is happy staying awake & she will let you know if not heheh then do what your both happy with !
No baby is the same & if this is working for you stick with it !
We've never followed a routine of any kind ;)
Wow! She sounds like a great sleeper!
Babies set their own timetables, and she sounds happy, so that is what is important
All the best! :D

Just wanted to add that my son only goes down when he shows his tired signs after having being feed and having wake time. I never force him to go to sleep. My routines are not determined by a clock...but parental assessment.
We each know whats best for our baby/ies.

Ah yes, Mrs Little, you speak the truth! :D

My 3 1/2 months old DS sleeps between 10 - 12 hours at night, I am very lucky as my DD did the same. She was only 2 weeks old when she started sleeping through the night. I also use my parental radar and don't bother looking at the time on the clock. DS doesn't sleep much in the daytime, but it gives us lots of play time. Don't know who's the biggest baby, him or I!

Mrs Little - Yep thats the best way !
The only time i stick to now is the 7 or 7.30pm sleep time as if i leave him longer i have found bubs to be as cranky as all hell ! Otherwise i go with what bubs wants he chooses his routine :)
