dh and I picked mine together from my favourite jeweller. It was $4500 and we picked up my wedding ring the same day too because it matched perfectly. that one was $2500 but every budget is different. and you can get beautiful rings on sale a lot of the time.

DP wants to spend around $1000 but everything that I like is so much more. I'm willing to go around $2500 :p

Just tell the jeweller it's too expensive and they will probably take about 30% off the top. :p Jewellers are very much a rip off.

My engagement ring was just over $1000 iirc and I think my wedding band was $250. My husband chose my engagement ring cause it was a surprise but I went shopping for wedding rings with him.

Mine was $400, honestly, I would of been happy with a plastic ring.
If I had a ring on my finger and I knew it was worth thousands I'd sell it for cash, get a cheaper ring. Yep I'm CHEAP.:D

We chose together. The set was worth $2300 ($1300 for engagement and $1000 for wedding) and we got it for $1800. I'll see if I can find a photo of it. We just went to a big chain jewellers and talked them down, but I am tight. I will never pay full price for anything.....and I always get my way:D
My latest was a brand new oven and cooktop was $2400 got the guy down to $1600(and he still replaced the door because it had a very, very minor scratch in it!!)

$1200 and about $100 for my wedder
it has an oval shaped Ceylon sapphire (pretty pastel blue colour) in the centre and a small square diamond on either side.
both rings white gold,
wedding ring is a very basic plain band

trying to get a pic up for you, I have one but trying to zoom in on the rings

I found because I went for a bigger stone that was not a diamond it kept the price down. So many people, who I know have very expensive rings, commented when we got it how pretty it was, didn't have the heart to tell them it was pretty cheap.

Thanks ladies for all your lovely pics. Very nice.
I'm not really sure how to get a price down at a Jewellery Store. Any tips? My DP will be better at it than me but I just feel awkward doing it.
Basically if we find the one we like and think it's too expensive do we just give them a price that we're comfortable with and stay persistant or what

can you look at getting it made up else where? it might work out cheaper? i dunno, never had a ring individually made

Mine was around the $8000 mark, and my wedding band was $1500. I love them. My engagement ring is one round diamond, with 6 channel set diamonds in the band, my wedding ring matches with 9 channel set diamonds. I love my eternity ring too, I went totally diff cause I have to wear it on the opposite hand. I'll try and take a photo tomorrow.
In regards to bargaining, all you have to say is 'what's the best price you can do?' Personally I think that getting a ring made tends to be cheaper, cause you buy the diamond and most jeweller then set it how you want. Sometimes I look in chain jewellery catalogues and think they are a bit of a rip off. And make sure you get a valuation and authenticity cert, so yo know it's real and for insurance purposes.

$2500 for my engagement ring
$100 for wedding band
$600 for eternity ring

All were made my the same jeweller... I think its better to go to the jeweller and get it made specifically... You can usually get a better cut of diamond for less than what other jewellers sell in the shops...

mum2peanut
29-03-2007, 19:32
It should be cheaper cause the mark up of jewellery is so high, where the mark up on an individual stone is not as much (from what I've been told). When you get a valuation of the rind/diamond, if you're getting it for half of that you've gotten a good price.

so how did you know how to decide what you wanted? There must be so many choices or did you have it already pictured in your head???

Mine is a heart shaped sapphire with a diamond each side. We designed it together and got it drawn up properly from a jeweller and I took it around to all the big jewellry stores (big mistake) they were all asking about $5000 - $6000 but we went to Diamonds international and we got it made for $3500 now valued at $4500 and they also made my wedding band for $700 and when my DH wants to get an eternity they will do it too.

2mths after I went around with the picture they had knock offs everywhere and boy was I ****ed as we specifically wanted something original.

I have had two engagement rings from the same person (the first was stolen when out house was broken into)

Both were were about $6,000.

I am now getting a new diamond - the company I work for has a diamond mine and we get quality diamonds at lower than retail. (Through work the same quality diamonds as mine are about $2800 but you still need a band.

My new diamond will be set in platinum or palladium(I am a metallurgist so to me gold is yellow is not white - its a personal thing).

I saw some great stones on ebay and if you were prepared to get your own ring re-made or modelld I think would be a great way to go.

Just ask what kind of a deal they can give you on it, or just say "it's lovely but it's too expensive" then start walking out. Most of the time they will whip out their calculator.
