Just wondering if anyone else had extraordinarily heavy periods after having a baby?
DS is 6.5months old and this is the second time I have had my period (last one 40 days ago).
But it is a lot heavier than last time!
I use a diva cup and I've worked out that day one it was 30ml, yesterday 70ml, and so far today, another 20ml.
Yesterday I had to empty my cup twice in two hours because it was almost full! Last period wasn't so heavy, is this normal?
Grrr don't want to go to the doctor. Hate them!

Can anyone give me some advice? Even pm me if you're too worried/embarrassed about posting. Looked it up on the web and nil.
My period has just returned after DS was born 5 months ago and it was heavy, heavier than I used to get prior to pregnancy. It came full on, then lasted only 4 days.
I'll have to wait and see when the next arrives now.
Sorry I don't know what a diva cup is :o I haven't actually heard of it before. What is it and what does it do / you do ?

Was it worrying you how heavy it was? Mine is worrying me, not like I think I'll die but it seems odd...
A diva cup a menstrual cup made from silicon (you can get rubber and latex ones too) that catches the blood, it sits inside your vagina like a tampon except it forms a seal. You then empty it instead of throwing it away, and usually only need to change it 3 times a day (morning, midday, night) and you can sleep with it in as it forms a watertight seal. It has measurements on the inside so I know how much there is, and it seems excessive?

yes mine was very heavy. I mentioned it to my OB at my checkup and she seemed suprised. She gave me a prescription for my next period to fix it. I never did take it and my flow has sort of gone back to normal since.
Were you on the pill before being pg? And have you gone back on it yet?
I was on the pill for 12 years prior to pg. I stopped taking it 12 months before TTC. It took 10 months to fall pg.
I haven't gone back on it yet.
No it hasn't worried me yet how heavy the flow was. But I just assumed it was normal considering how much there was post-partum and for 8 weeks straight.
I just put it down to my body cleansing itself out after such a huge body change of carrying bubs and giving birth.

MIne seemed very heavy the second and third times. I wasn't sure if it was just that I had heavy bleeding or that I had forgotten what it was like?? It just seemed heavier and messier.
It all seems normal now.

I was quite heavy with my 1st period after birth (when dd2 was 10mths). My next period was about 2 weeks late but not overly heavy.
Now they are like clockwork and I've found they are shorter since using the cup and cloth pads. Where I used to have AF for about 5 days they are now 3-4 days. Plus I have absolutely no pain what so ever. So if it wasn't for the blood I wouldn't even no AF was here;)
The average menstrual flow is about 100ml or less for each period. You have about 3.5 litres of blood in your body so it's not really much to lose is it:)

Yep mine too is heavier now that I've had Taliyah. I used to get really really bad period pain along with it but thank god that's gone!

Mine's pretty heavy - much heavier in comparision to pre-preg. Mind you, I have put on a lot of weight since then, so I figure that might have something to do with it.
I don't use a diva cup, so I wouldn't know how I'd compare to your loss... but I also get very huge "patches" of blood in a pad. Like, the whole pad used to be able to fill up... but since having DD, there's always one big oval-shaped area full of menstrual blood... it's like it's coming from the front end of my vagina... not directly underneath my body but to the front of it. It's weird.
I don't have anything to help you, but I've had this going on for 20 months now, and I haven't died or anything yet...lol.

mine have also gotten heavier (when i get them - they are more irregular post-pregnancy) since being pregnant. my dd is 19 months and i gush like a fountain for the first 3 days then it slows to a trickle. my last cycle was just under 2 months between bleeds. i haven't got my cup yet so i don't know how much i am losing but during the day i can soak a super tampon in 2-3 hours and i have to get up and change my pad at night.

Er, but I've lost about 150ml so far in 3 days, and last time I bled for 7 days. If it keeps up this pace, I'll have lost over 300ml!! Plus I've been very crampy and my back has been sore too. Might be nothing tho. But before I was pregnant with Phoenix I had no pain or cramping and periods were every 35 days clockwork, and only for 3 day.
Maybe it's just my body adjusting?

Keep an eye on it and if you get really worried go see your Dr. 100ml is an average remember, so some women may have heavier periods and others lighter. I think that's the beauty of a cup though, being able to monitor your period is fantastic:yes:

Yes, I agree Gremily- I love my cup!! Makes me want to tell the world about how easy it is!
No more tampons in the bathroom bin, no more plastic wrappers, no more running out of pads, no more stinky undies! Just one lovely cup I empty every now and again! Oh, and no more money being wasted!!:smiliedance:
I'll keep an eye on it. Seems lots of people have heavy periods post-babies so I guess it's a norm *shrug* I don't think I'm bleeding to death, just think it's odd.:(
