Hi everyone

I have a 5 month old daughter who has been on and off feeding for the last month and a half. She has always been what I call a fussy feeder but things have gotten a lot worse and now she is losing weight.

She has been very distracted during feeding since the 3 month mark and will pull off after about 3 minutes look around and I can't get her to latch on again. She only takes one side during the day and wont take formula from a bottle either. She has now started to cry in the middle of her feeds and thrash around and arch her back, when this happens the feed is over even though she still appears to want to feed but she just cries as soon as she goes near the nipple. I try to burp her and put her back on but it doesn't work. At first I thought she was just telling me that she'd had enough, but that can't be the case if she's losing weight. She doesn't do any of the problem feeding at her 6:30pm or 9:30 pm feed when she is very tired, its only during the day.

We started solids at 4 months as she wasn't feeding well but she's not that interested and hardly swallows any. She also wont take water from a bottle. I give her a sippy cup which she chews on rather than drinks but a small amount of water does go in her mouth.

This has been going on for sometime but it has gotten worse in the last two weeks and she appears noticebly thinner. The CHN said to just check her after Xmas but I'm worried that's to far away especially in the summer heat.

I was planning to put her on formula this coming week in preparation for my return to work (not able to pump in my workplace) but I'm having second thoughts now incase she really won't take the bottle and loses even more weight.

I'm thinking of trying the Infants Friend to see if that makes a difference. I was wondering if reflux can start at 5 months or is this just a feeding behaviour issue.
She did used to vomit a far bit during feeds (a couple of times a week) but that stopped at about 4 months. Could she have had reflux all along and maybe its just gotten worse?

I'm taking her to the doctor on Monday to see what they say, but I'd really like some Mum's opinions on the issue too.

It could be reflux, probably silent reflux if she does not vomit. It also sounds like it started at 3 months when she started to fight the breast. Does she do little sicky burps and swallow and then cry? It may be acid in her throat. Does she hate to be on her back?
A little trick is to give her 1ml of Mylanta before a feed and see if she feeds okay. That is a pretty good indication that it is heartburn reflux.

Good luck at the Docs.
