Hi ladies Im currently 7-8 weeks pregnant, had GD with DD2 and dont remember the symptoms. I was just talking to the midwife and she said extreme thrist can be a symptom u may have it, has this been the case with anyone?? Im going to have a test this week to see if I have it early. Today i have been really thirsty but not other days this is the 1st time ive drunk glasses of water and still felt i could drink a whole pool. Could i just be having a thirsty arvo or could it be GD?
I know only a blood test will tell just want other mums experiences. Thanks

Im wondering if it was the kfc i ate for lunch cause it started after that, has kfc got msg? cause that makes me very thirsty. I so hope i dont have it this time it was hard to cope with last time because i hate needles so much and the thought of having to pick my finger daily or insulin injections is just a scary thought.

In retrospect, I was going to the toilet a lot (every 2 hours from 24 weeks) and in turn having to drink a lot, and I had put on a lot of weight.

But regarding your issue, I thought that in the first trimester it was normal to have to go to the toilet a lot (due to hormones) so you woudl therefore be thristy? I know I am and I am 9 weeks. I had GD last time so am being obsessional and testing now, but my sugars are generally OK (I think).

I had GD with my first pregnancy and had a few symptoms (mainly thirst) when preggas with my second I was convinced I had it again, every little thing made me think "thats a symptom, I have it" iykwim?
Anyway I didnt have it and I didnt get it with my second pregnancy.

Have the tests done and then again later if need be(They tested me about 4 times through my second preg. just to make sure)

But hopefully you can steer clear of it this time :fingerscrossed:

oh and KFC could definately make you feel thirsty

Thirst is a symptom of pregnancy, not GD. If you don't drink enough you'll probably get light headed, so make sure you keep up the fluids.

I had GD and had to go on insulin, so I asked about how to prevent it next time. Basically only 50% of women get it again and there isn't a huge amount you can do to prevent it. What you can do is to eat healthy food, and exercise if you can. Ideally losing weight before you get pregnant helps too. Weight gain in pregnancy doesn't seem to be a major issue ... I only gained 8kg in total and yet I got it! AND, 50% of women with GD are in the normal weight range before they get pregnant.

I was told that I need to have my first test at 24 - 26 weeks next time. It's rarely an issue earlier in the pregnancy.

Thirst is a sign of GD as well as pg;) I had it with my first pg and I pretty much had a water bottle glued to my hand all day and had one near my bed at night.

But yeah the KFC probably caused the thirst this time.

I had no symtoms at all. I was convinced the dr.s were just being silly sending me off the the 2 hour GTT.
But I do have GD, I still feel compleatly normal.

mim 1 - with going on insulin how is it administered is it like a shot that u give with the press of a button or is it a syringelike when u get a needle?

I had a hard time coping with just the finger ***** test 4 times a day dont think i could have done the insulin. I hate needles so scared of them!!

it looks like a large pen. they give you a box of needles which are just a small needle with a bit to screw onto the end of the pen. you turn the dial to the correct dosage (the doctor should tell you your dosage) then grab a bit of fat on the side of your belly and just gently push it in, then there is a button at the other end of the pen and you ke-ep pushing that down till it goes in no further and wait two seconds then pull it out again... relatively easy and if you get it right, it shouldnt hurt. it is uncomfortable though... i wont lie. but thayt could be me...i am the biggest sook when it comes to needles...but i have to say the finger pr!ck is more painful than the insulin needle as the insulin needle is smaller therefore less painful.
