When I was pg with my daughter, I didnt know that I wasnt supposed to eat certain things etc so ate whatever I wanted :o

This time however, I have all the "cant eat this" stuff constantly floating around in my head which is annoying :banghead: I want to enjoy pg, not stress about what i'm eating.

What are you like with eating during pg, do you eat what you want, or do you follow "the rules?"

This is bub no 4 for me and I tend to not stress too much and eat what I want (but not being silly about it ) - I do avoid the self serve type coleslaws and things though :)

Its bub #1 for us but I'm not going to go overboard on things and DH says everything is fine with him.

I know I'll give up diet coke, ham and coffee but I'm keeping my peanut butter and just trying to eat better and more regularly

I folow the "rules" but mainly cos if somehow something happened that could have been avoided i would feel awful..

I followed the rules and jacob needed several operations, so im scared to not follow the rules and have something worse happen..

But all that said years and years women have been having healthy babys before they knew about "the rules" so i think as long as your sensible thats all that matters...

(vespera you dont have to give up coke.. i have the caffine free.. )

Yeh, I am finding it hard to avoid the bad stuff like cold meat and soft cheeses. Also pre - prepared salads. Does this include places like sandwich shops who may buy some of their salad ingredients pre sliced/chopped??

I really love my ham so I'm missing it terribly, same with sushi. Although before I knew I was preggers, I ate sushi several times, drank quite a bit of alcohol and had ham and coleslaw!!

Trying to keep away from it all now. I'm trying to keep my caffeine down too and love Coke, havne't tried the decaf version....

I'm trying my best not to have anything on the no no list. But it helps when I'm lactose intolerant and don't usually eat stuff like cheese or soft cheeses. I steer clear of any pre-prepared salads like the ones at salad bars, buffets, woolies & coles and those fast food outlets. I have had to give up pre-cooked seafood like blue swimmer crab :( which I absolutely love. Its a pain to buy it fresh and to cook it myself. Also finding it hard to keep away from caffeinated drinks like coke and tea!!! Had such a craving for coffee on the weekend but stopped myself from having a cup.

I miss ham as well.....but I'm not sure if I can eat it...I heard it was a no no.

I guess I am extra careful of my eating habits as this is bub #1 and it was so very hard to fall pregnant in the first place.

We saw our OB for the first time on Friday and bub seems to be doing well..measured 1.48cm. Can't believe how tiny they are at about 8 weeks!

I'm being really good because I don't want anything to go wrong (given my history). Most of the no-nos I can live with except ham..... I REALLY MISS HAM.

I always thought I would be strict.. and I have been to a point. I have cut out Coke, and am only eating soft cheeses cooked (everything I have read say's that cooked is A.O.K!) So having lots of fettichinies and Quiches.
I miss ham, but do have it occasionally, I just ask the deli not to use first few slices on top.
Like Preprepared salad too much to not use them. (I do wash first)
OMG I do do do Miss soft serve icecream!

Otherwise, Im just praying.. like all of us I expect.:fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed:

I just cant bring myself to restrict everything. I will still have a cup of tea & can of coke a day. I dont smoke, drink alcohol or coffee or do drugs. I've stopped the Brie & sushi :gloomy: dont eat pre-prepared salads anyway, but will allow myself the occasional soft serve ice-cream or frozen yoghurt.

Thats a good question, what about subway etc, is that a no-no?

There are no healthy alternatives when your pg if you eat at a food court. Its silly.

Hmmm subway - don't think I would do it. Sometimes it's not very fresh. Then again, if you can see that all the ingredients you want look nice and freshly prepared then it should be fine.

If you are drinking coke you need to be careful that you are taking multi vits and mins. The phosphorous can have some pretty bad effects on the body including decalcification - and it is hard enough to keep up the calcium when you are preg.

As my twins are milk protein allergic, I won't be drinking as much milk this time round, but then again, it is easy to cut back from 2-3 litres a day :o

I have quit smoking, and i have cut things down though not quit ie alcohol and things like that.. though not into drugs...

be careful with diet coke or some drinks as it has sacrin(sp) in it and that type of sugar isnt the best for bubs!

I like my subway!!! I am vege so not eating hams or anything like that. the salads are supposed to be kept at right temp which most subway's are controled pretty well!

This is the thing though, I only took a folate supplement whilst pg with DD. Drank coke throughout with no issues. I dont drink much milk at all, never have but calcium has never been an issue.

i've cut out the ham, soft cheeses (although i am dying for biscuits with quince paste and camembert cheese  ) and all that other jazz but im not extremely strict on it. I know what I could and couldn't have from my pregnancy with Abs so will mainly just stick to that. Definately no alcohol though-I read an article about a lady who was told by her doctor that 4 units of alcohol a week in her pregnancy was safe so she had a few glasses a week or wine and her son ended up with foetal alcohol syndrome. IMHO it's jus tnot worth the risk

I'm completely off most foods that I love-the thought of them makes me want to be sick and then other ones that dont make me sick that I crave I have and then am sick for hours afterwards! "just keep swimming swimming swimming"

Nup! *dont shoot!*
i never have and probably never will i dont eat things i cant stomach, but if i want it i'll eat it, personally i think cutting out things u like just because ur preg is silly, the baby is growing within u and if it doesnt like what ur eating then it will tell u by making u :barf: , i think all of the food "rules" are a big load of BS!
Sorry if i offened anyone JMO

Not all the food no nos are BS e.g. sushi and uncooked meats can have listeria, which can cause baby and mummy to be very, very sick. You can miscarry, have still birth or premature baby. I absolutely love salmon sashimi but I don't eat it now that I am preggers. I just think that it is better to be safe than sorry.

hi everyone, sorry to but in here

but i read that people are drinking diet coke, diet coke has fake sugar in it (sorry pregnancy mind blank for the name right now) anyways its not good to take anything with certain sugar supliments in it while preggy,

ordinary coke is alright in modiration though

Hoping sushi is all good if you make it fresh yourself, just make sure the rice is really well cooked

I thought regular coke was okay!! The caffiene content is very very low and well within the right limits. I still have no more than a cup in a single day though.

My GP told me that ham is okay. As long as it's not deli ham. It has to be sealed and wrapped with a long away use by date and eaten all within a couple of days. It's a bit more expensive though. I ate that right through my first pregnancy and it was fine.

Hoping: I was once lactose intolerant too! You know what's wierd....my first pregnancy CURED my lactose intolerance! By the last few months of my pregnancy I was happily scoffing ice cream and all the milk and cheese I wanted. I know someone else who after their 1st baby was born was suddenly cured of lactose intolerance too. My ob says that pregnancy can do some strange things and was not at all surprised.
So :fingerscrossed: that will happen for you too...I know how awful lactose intolerance is.

Good on you Kyahli for quitting - great effort

I ment to write most of the food rules are bs, i just dont see why i can eat the foods i love just because i'm preg, I dont like sushi so i dont eat it, i love cheeses all sorts amd i will eat it if i want it, i love steak, all sorts of red meat and i like it rare crispy on the outside and very pink in the middle it never hurt my other children while i was preg with them, i was also told you cant have pre made food like deli sandwiches and Subway, i love those too and i wont stop eating them cause their yummo, again this is my opinion.;)

ugh...who can stomach sushi anyway??? The mere thought of it makes me want to rush out to the bathroom to :barf:ditto soft cheese.

My ob seemed very blase about what I ate but was strongly emphasising the importance of the supplements.

I dont think its very safe to completely overhaul your diet when your pg. Do we really think that Japanese women stop eating sushi etc. Our parents didnt alter their diets. Also with food laws the way they are, they would have signs up or labels saying "not recommended for pregnant women."

Mrs X - You're totally right. An extra stress we do not need.

I forgot to add....My ob added that it's okay if I eat ****, just to remember that the baby gets all the nutrients it needs and my body is left with whatever is left over.

SO if you're going to eat **** you're going to feel like so. If you eat really well then your baby as well as your own body are getting everything they need. I think I'm somewhere in the middle. I'll certainly eat better once I stop feeling so queasy.

I LOVE my ob - I suppose none of you noticed :p

mummy2sophie: I hope that I am like you, i.e. bye bye to lactose intolerance. Its such a pain not to be able to have milk, yoghurt or cheese without getting a stomach ache or worse diarrhea! You're also right. I heard that baby will only take what it needs from you. In fact i heard that it gets first dibs on vitamins and minerals and protein. Not sure if that last one is correct though so don't quote me on that.

I love sushi and sashimi. I could have it every week if i wanted to!! Yummy yum. Funny thing about this pregnancy is that I haven't been turned off any foods (knock on wood!). I can pretty much eat anything (apart from the no nos), which is lucky YAY!

Lozie: Apart from the no nos, I am like you. I eat what I want, whenever I want. If I want to eat something then wild horses couldn't stop me!

I KNOW!! I remember what it was like to have soy - always be asking if something came with cheese at restaurants, salivating at someone having an icecream on a hot summer's day....those days are gone for me!

In fact my OBSTETRICIAN left me the impression that the baby takes what it needs first and then the rest goes to me. And he did say that the baby takes so little now. But he added it's good to get into good eating habits now as by the end of the 2nd trimester your baby takes far more nutrients and you're leaving your body in a poor state if you don't eat well.
He just insists on taking your supplements.

I think it's also good to have at least some vegies every day and fish twice a week.

Oh...and I should probably give up that cocaine habit.

Nothing but ms is going to stop me eating them if I want to. Just not every day or I really will :barf:
