I saw that someone ( :p ) in another thread does...
 I've never washed mine out... It got a little bit of pooh on it once, and I just cleaned it off. But as for actually washing it out... never! I never even thought about it, TBH.

OMG! Am I a dirty pig? Or am I normal..... :o

Yep, it's probably a good idea to give it a wash out from time to time Sarah :p Just wash it out with dish washing liquid and a quick rinse out and wipe dry with a tee-towel.

I use to wash mine out but i don't dry pail at all now. Just throw it in the washing machine until there's a full load of 'stuff' (instead of washing nappies separately) and believe me it doesn't take long, so it's not sitting in there for a long length of time. Ohh and clothes ect don't come out smelling like wee or anything

I rinse mine out every now and then.

 I don't think you're a dirty pig!I'm sure you'd clean it out if you thought it needed it!

I dry pail with 2 buckets (one in the bathroom for sopping wet 'little squirted' IE pooey nappies, and one in bubs room) and I have to wash mine out regularly otherwise they get pretty on the nose. Not from the poo so much, the little squirt takes care of that, but just that whiffy ammonia/ pee smell. Jet's a heavy wetter though, especially at night, so maybe his nappies are just wetter than your bubs, which transfers to the bucket and makes the bucket stinkier? who knows!

Phew, Dani! We can be piggies together!!!

It's never even entered my mind, to clean it! I feel all embarrassed now.... :o .... Because I'm actually a very clean person. My friends call me anal about how I like to keep my house clean & tidy. So this is a big blow! I'm going to spend all day stressing about it. I may even have nightmares! :p

Every time I emptied it I washed it out.

 yep same here. I wash nappies every 3 days, so the bucket gets washed every 3 days then out in the sun to dry.

I only ever clean mine if it's obviously dirty from poo. Which is once in a blue moon. Even then I just squirt it out with the hose, or fill it with boiling water and a few drops of tea tree oil. 95% of the time when I empty the nappies into the wash I leave the bucket and lid out in the sun until I have another nappy to put in.

I'd probably do what Lauren does and just chuck the nappies in the washing machine and not worry about a bucket, except our laundry is outside and it would be more over a hassle than anything.

I haven't washed mine either, I just let it air when I've put the nappies in the machine to wash and drop some baking soda in the bottom from time to time:o

I suppose I don't give it a thorough clean, I just rinse it with hot water after emptying, then give it an airing, put a few drops of lavender or tea tree oil in the bottom, and then pop it back in bub's room. I've never had poo on it, so I've never had to give it a proper clean.

Good question though!

Then how do you clean the tea towel?? Why not wipe it out with paper towel instead? :)

Ummm... put it in the washing machine until theres a full load, hang it out in the sun. The less paper used the better i reckon.

yeah I do cause it smells otherwise. I rinse it out with water and then put antibacterial solution in it full of water and let it soak overnight when the nappies are getting washed.

whats a pail pal

It's basically made from bicarb soda and fragrance. Pretty easy to make your own.

Wouldn't it be just as easy to chuck the tea towel in with the washing? As the saying goes: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:)

I just air it in the sun when a bit smelly, think I have washed it once or twice!

I have made pail pals, pretty easy really, must be if even I can do it, lol! I just leave them in the bucket for a while, then just let it go in the wash with the nappies.

I wash mine out while the load is in the machine......not cos its dirty, just cos of the smell. OMG I can't stand the smell. I rinse it with warm water and put a few drops of essential oil in it (the whole house smells nice) and then leave it for a while before rinsing and drying out........

I have rinsed the bucket 3 times I think in 8 months. I then put it in the sun to 'bleach' it. I have wondered if that is enough. Seems okay though.

Thanks for all your replies everyone :hugs: .

Just thought I might add - I keep my nappy bucket in the laundry, so no germies are in Mitch's room. Just in case you can all picture a festy overflowing stinky bucket beside the change table, it's not like that at all!!!!

And I'm going to start washing it out... not everyday, but about once a week or so.

22-03-2007, 16:04
Sarah, I think the sun to dry it out is more important - might get germs multiplying in moist environment... Just pop it out in the sun after emptying until you need it next! Then just wash it every week or two...

I've washed mine a few times, but have put it out in the sun more (after reading that great tip on here somewhere )

I just leave them in the bucket for a while, then just let it go in the wash with the nappies

didn't realise you could do that :o ... thanks never reall thought what was in them I suppose!

I have some pail pals, but love my vanilla essence smell, so use that to stop any overbearing smells all through the house :D

I rinse mine every night, sometimes a soap wash (just hand soap!!) or a bit of vinegar or bicarb ... but I always just put it back wet! Ewww ... after reading this thread I wonder if that is worse as the germs can multiply in the wet!!

When a facewasher is heading for the laundry at the same time as the bucket is empty (usually every day, because I gather up all the washing at the same time as I empty the bucket into the machine) I just wipe the inside of the bucket with some warm water and the washer. Chuck the washer in the machine, tip the bucket upside down to drain.

Once a week or so I take the bucket out with me to sit in the sun while I hang out the washing.
