*Takes a deep breath*
I've noticed a lot of people in general,
(not just bubhub), do a lot of, "stupid American!', calls. (I've delt with this for a long time).
I guess a lot of people don't look at the U.S as another race, some even think it's okay to belittle people if they're, 'American', as if it's not discriminative what so ever...
Why don't we start a thread where we can discuss American politics, (woah! That could get crazy!), or talk about the typical generalisations we hear about those, 'Americans'.
We have a few Americans on this site, including myself, so if we kept this thread non-offensive, that'd be cool.
No one forgets where they come from, I didn't grow up in a George bush following household, nor will I ever, I hate it when people hear that I'm American they automatically assume that i'm a stupid rebuplican, oh wait, they don't even say that, they just say push me off into the stereotype of all American's being stupid like George Bush.:(
(btw, no one on bubhub has ever ridiculed me about my nationality so this is no personal attack at all!).
(As many threads in the past).
People ask questions about the states, if you have a question that you've always been interested in, ask away, anyone who knows that answer, regardless of their nationality should have their input! They can explain it...
Let's start studying!
I didn't know u were American. Cool. Where abouts is your fam from in America? (CAn I ask those sorts of questions.
I luv America, have travelled a fair bit. Am so interested in the American Indian culture too.

Oh thank you Heather!
Kiah- I am from Kansas city, MO.
I've lived here for about 10 years.
That's great that you travelled, where abouts?
You can ask any questions, everyone is welcome! T
here are a few Americans on this site that would answer them too, I'm sure. :)
American Indian culture too
Oh nice, I love American Idian culture too. I'm a decendent of cherokee, if you've heard of that tribe. :)

I've been to heaps of places in California, Nevada, Idaho, I went for a weekend in Seattle once. New York, Florida. I went to Disneyworld when i was 10 and Disney World when i was 20. Liked it better the second time round (more fun when u r a big kid).
I drove from Mexico to Seattle and saw so much. I was amazed by the incredible landscapes. I really found American people to be super friendly and fascinated by Aussies.
I think my fave place in the States was Idaho. I adored the mountains and lakes and the laid back people.

I have family from all over, so I know what you're talking about :)
Kansas looks like Tamworth, Aus.
Nearly every state has it's own big city town like New york! So I'd get those Hick calls all the time lol.
I've travelled along the southern states too, it's a great road trip, I was amazed at how beautiful New Mexico, Arizona were! They would have to be my favourite states!

A lot of people think those dream catchers are evil, (traditonals), but I know they are very spiritual, just like the entire American Indian culture, they have stores that still sell herbel remedies, they have a very similar dream time story to tell as the aboriginies, (native Aussies, as I like to call it), which makes me wonder about the reality and faith of it all, two different cultures from thousands of miles away from another with very similar beliefs. :)
It's basically the same story as when the English went to Aus, caused havoc with the Aboriginies, the English also went to the states and meddled with the American Idians.
Like any country there are good ones and bad ones sensible ones and stupid ones.
I have many American friends love them all.
I wish I could of spent more time when I went there. Now that we're in the UK we hope to go there more often I really want to go to CO,AZ, NYC again, CA, well everywhere really lol especially Yosemite!!
Sounds like a great thread.. though do have to admit that after knowing Matilda's father for a while (who is from the US) 2 or 3 of the generalisations I had were true ..
If I can help out I will . .not exactly american but having lived with one for 10 mths and also have plenty of american friends!!
Matilda's father is from Houston Texas tho currently lives in Austin . . . and also has some American Indian heritage as well . .for the life of me I can't remember exactly . .lol

I have been to America twice. First time with my dad and brother to Disneyland when I was 14.
Second time was Sept 2005 for my honeymoon. I went to LA, San Fran, Vegas, Miami, New York and Hawaii (Honolulu & Maui)
If it wasn't for the Government (no offense) I would love to live there:) preferably NY.

I love the candy too, but the chocolate no, Australia has the best chocolates, or Europe that's for sure!
I love disney land, Kiah, I agree that it's better going there as a big kid! :) I was running around like a little kid though. Tehehe.
I have this parinoia fear of the East coast because of this documentary I watched about the volcano that is going to errupt way out east, causing the clif side to break and cause a massive tidal wave, hitting the whole east coast. They titled it the worst natural disaster ever to be predicted.

i just decided to check out the website coz they have a hooters at parramatta which is not far from me ( i pass it everytime i go to pick DP up from working away)

does anyone know what kinda of atmosphere it is there? is it just obnoxious men there to look at womens boobs or is it a ok place to get a nice meal...

Well, if you remember my thread about a specific friend.
She used to work there, the girls wear see through stockings, red short shorts and a hooters top.
My friend left because she was sick of being sexually harrassed, I think it's a guys scene.
But go there and try the food!

22-03-2007, 00:27
...I'll personally stick to Lone Star... mmmm Angus Burger, Chicken Tenders, Genetically Mutated Potatoes... hehehe
I've just realised I know a lot about Native Americans. I went through a "find myself" stage and did a lot of reading up about them... And I learnt what REALLY happened on "Thanksgiving" :shame:
I've never been though, if I did I'd want to get married by Elvis and then spend as much time as I can living with Natives... that'd be cool.
But I have lots of friends over there, and family and friends have lived there as well.
The only thing they didn't like was the fat content in food... they all put on about 20kgs within at least 6months when they were there!! lol
Oh and My sister took a holiday in Hawaii... her reason for going? "Taco Bell! I Want Taco Bell!" lmao
i think i might take DP to hooters just once for our anniversary next month :p

Like..
What's the american equivalent to the aussie target, kmart, david jones, myer, big w?

They have Target in the US
and kmart/big w is their walmart. . though there's is open a lot more hours and carries a lot more stuff. . hehe

 Ash,
Always Read babysitters club books and dreamed of being american!! (mainly cause their Lollies sounded so so YUM!! no Ring dings here!) So I wanted to know what a ring ding actually is!
My Fella is a mad keen baseball fanatic, and would love to go to the states to see a major Leauge game.. (I want to know what the hotdogas are like!)
Ohhhhhh!! (sensing a theme here!) I heard USA Big Macs have orange special sauce! Is that true!!
(OMG, all I can think about is food!)
Americans Rock!
Ashleigh<3
22-03-2007, 11:21
Em, you can buy American hot dogs here in the chilled area of your store near the salami, etc.
They are exactly the same :)
The fast food is delicious but you really know where it's going after you've eaten it iykwim?
Ring dings are a yummy chocolate cake with whipped cream in the middle, a bit like yo-yo's, creamed cakes.
David jones + myer = Hmmm JC Penny.. Someone might know a better one?
Target = target is in the states too, they have baby target too.
Kids-r-us, toys-r-us.
BIG W = Wall-mart
grocery stores, Dillards, hi-v, hen house... (lots)
Coles = KHOLES, (this stoor is the biggest shopping store in the states they sell everything! Food to electronics to furniture.
When my family first moved here all of their money doubled, but now considering the exchange rate, for an American to come here they wouldn't get as much back, $50 American would probably get you $60-$65 Aus.
If you were an Australian going to America, with $50 you'd probably get $40-$35.
Someone might be able to correct me on that one too.
And jack in the box... :chef:
OMG you reminded me that Matilda's father used to work there. . cracks me up every time I think of it!!

If you can get good tips at those places it's pretty good, my cousin worked at sonic, a drive through place where the cars pull up, you have your own menu and the girls come out with your food on rollerskates, food like, cheesy hash browns, blizard ice-cream drinks and ohhhh soo much more, sometimes she'd bring home over $100 in tips from a 9 hour shift, they work for $4.80 an hour though.
Ash I would probably say that
Macy's or Bloomingdale's are closer to our Myer & David Jones.
I forgot to mention that I loved the health food supermarket Whole Foods it was fantastic.
I hated Taco Bell but I loved the chili poppers at Jack In The Box & I also loved the Outback Steakhouse.
I lived in San Francisco & there Burritos were so big & so so yummy.

i'm usually too busy pommy bashing to think about americans....
nah, but seriously, when i went to america (Boston and New york) , the minute i got off the plane, i was like an over excited kid in a lolly shop. i was so excited i wanted to touch everyone, especially the guys at immigration because they all looked exactly like Eric Estrada from Chips.
I could clearly see why immigrants would drop to their knees and say 'America, America !!!!". Does seem like dreams can come true there.
whats popeyes chicken like?? thats an american food chain right?? but they have it in korea too. i have a funny video on my computer of a korean celebrity making an idiot out of herself for an ad for popeyes....

All this talk made me hungry so a box full of goodies will be arriving at my house on Monday from USA foods!! :o
Arrrr if only they could deliver me a box of assorted fresh bagels & a few containers of the different cream cheeses to go with them(my Fave being honey & walnut to go with the blueberry bagel) :crying:
I was born and raised in the US moved out here with hubby and it was originally for 2 yrs but we have decided to stay now.
My brother is also looking at moving out here soon he came and visited with my nieces and they loved it so it will be good to have some family around.
I miss home like crazy but honestly i prefer Aussie as a child it was my dream to live here and as soon as I saved up enough money from childhood modeling and commercials ect. I came on a holiday out here at 18 I think.
I'm really off track now so yeh I lived in New York and California and Hawaii for about a yr.
Ashleigh<3
26-03-2007, 19:23
Cupcake- Bloomingdales is probably more precise. I always remember bloomingdales being more expensive though, when you work out the difference between the exchange rate.
All I need is a box of Whitmans samplers, hershey's chocolate syrup (sent over) and I feel like I'm at my Grandma's house, or watching old school movies like seven brides for seven brothers!:o :D

I can tell you that I don't think of an American and think 'Republican'.
I know America is a very divided country politically.
There are many truly great and inspirational American's
Yes I have heard the 'Arrogant Yank' comments since I was a child but to be honest I don't know many American people personally to comment.
All I can comment on is the American people that I see in the News, in movies, actors on TV etc.
I DISLIKE George Bush immensely!
As the most powerful man in the world, it kind of scares me.
He would be funny if it weren't so damn serious....
I love watching 'The View' with Rosie O'Donnell as it gives great insight into the differing views of American's. It is one of my favourite shows!!!
Ashleigh<3
26-03-2007, 19:54
I wanted to share some funny quotes that state how literate good ol' Georgey is!
"The vast majority of our imports come from outside the country."
"One word sums up probably the responsibility of any Governor, and that one word is 'to be prepared'."
"I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future."
"We're going to have the best educated American people in the world."
"Quite frankly, teachers are the only profession that teach our children."
"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."
"It's time for the human race to enter the solar system."
Lol gotta love bushy
what a joke

He has the ultimate smartsy skills ahah! :)
Part Cherokee huh?
When I was growing up, we had a beautiful German Shepherd, and that is what we named her... I hope that is not offensive at all!! We loved the name!
I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with America.
When I was growing up, all I heard from my father was 'Bloody Americans/Yanks" yada, yada, and I think the attitude passed on to me a bit.
Now, fast foward a fair few years, and I find out that my father is adopted, and his father is actually an American WW2 medical officer in the army, stationed in NZ. Well, that begins to explain to me his attitude, and I can now see it as being a very jaundiced view.
I am getting up the courage to start digging to find out about my American Airman grandfather, and one day I would love to travel to where he was from, and just look around a bit.
My perception of America is that it has pretty much everything... From bigots to idealists, and everything in between.
The sheer size of the place alone makes it interesting, let alone all of the cultures which make up modern America.
So, I am 1/4 American myself, I just have to find out about my heritage, it's a pretty exciting thought to be honest.
I've ALWAYS wanted to go to Mexico too...
Great thread!! :)

When we first moved to Aus, my brother found a friend and whenever they'd fight his Mum would peak her head out the window and yell out, "go back to where you came from you stupid yanks!".
I didn't even know what a yank was until we moved here. My brother- ("Do they mean we play in the yakee's?").
My Grandpa was drafted off to Germany when he was 20, I guess with the times we live in, we are lucky in comparison.

Love travelling in the USA! We did a 20,000km road trip around America in 2005. Had the best time! It's such an easy and interesting country to explore.
I'm a big talk show fan so we saw Oprah & Jerry Springer in Chicago and Dr Phil in LA.
Las Vegas and New York were fantastic also.
We met some great locals along the way who were really interested in our travels - and one lovely lady who hadn't heard of Australia. hehehe. She was so cute trying to pronounce it.
We loved every minute we spent in the US and can't wait to go back!

Oh that's just shocking.
Hilarious Tru, about the old lady that knew nothing about 'AUUUssstreeyyyyllllyaa?"
What was it like seeing Oprah, Dr Phil and Jerry Springer:laughing:
Oprah was sooooo hard to get in to. We went to Harpo studios 3 times before we got to sit in on a show. It was worth it though.
Dr Phil was easy to get in to. We were in the second row, right next to the centre walkway. He wears sooo much makeup!
Jerry Springer I don't usually watch but being in the audience was very entertaining and Jerry is very funny. He spoke to us for a while before the show, asking where in Australia we were from, etc. In case anyone didn't know - the fights in the show are set up. They ring a bell and the people on stage just run at each other when they hear it.
Next time I want to go and see Ellen and Saturday Night Live :D

Wow! I would love to see Oprah!
Was everyone in the audience dressed up heaps?
The women in the audience always look so prissy..
...do they make their stories up?? ....
They didn't say if they were made up but it was kind of obvious because at the end of the show 2 of the men who were supposedly furious with each other just walked off the stage next to each other like nothing had happened
Wow! I would love to see Oprah!
Was everyone in the audience dressed up heaps?..
Yes, most people were really dressed up and so excited to be there. The 2nd time we tried to get in we got there at 5am, all dressed up and we just missed out on standby seats. I was so upset I cried :crying: (big baby!) The nice audience staff member came out to talk to us and when we told her we were from Australia she arranged guaranteed seats for us for another day :smiliedance: I was so happy! Seeing Oprah was on my "Things To Do In Life" list.

When hubby and i first got married he started a new job so we moved to Indianapolis for 12 mths for his training. It was great, great people made heaps of friends im still in contact with. Hope to get back there one day to see them all.
While DH worked i had a great time made friends the indy mounted patrol so i helped with the horses and they taught me to ride, great bunch of guys and girls, they even got us free tickets for the Indy 500 and police escort getting there.
Travelled heaps drove across the country from Indy to seattle what an experince! Loved Yellowstone Nat Park the best and even nearly encountered a tornado in Sou City sp? I think its in a dakota state. We were in Indy on Sept. 11 and it was scary and quiet when all planes were grounded. Huge patriotism from the Americans.
Enough of my babble, loved america and to live there and experience evry day life was great.
Gotta say love P.F Changs resturant, best chinese ever wish theyd open up here. Can any one maybe snap freeze some for me and send it? PWWEEEAASE!!
DH is American born. I find most 'anti american' people have never been and don't even know any. lol
Oh yes I can identify with this.
Been here 10 years, worked in the city for about 3 years and constantly had the "only in America " sayings.
I never realised how the world saw American's till I moved away, it's kind of half/ half. Some love it, others loathe it. They base their view of US on Jerry Springer, Cops, Law and Order. LOL
I always try and explain just how diverse the US is. Each state so different and so individual with such drastic changes in temp, etc etc.
If you base your whole idea on LA, then YEAH I guess its not so great.
I am 100% proud to be American.
Does anyone still say "In America...." and get the comment back, "you've lived here 10 yrs, get used to it".. ??:laughing::laughing:

You are so spot on Amy.
My biggest hate is when people ignorantly presume that because George Bush is president, all Americans are republicans.
Who cares about the last presidential election, who cares that more then half the population are INFACT democrats or independent, etc.
I still blame popular culture.:p
Aside from politics, America does have a lot of crime, but- The United states is also filled with tones of loving humans, you know the kind that say, "you're welcome", and "can I help you?", and, "Would you like to supersize your meal?".

It certainly is, mainly because a lot of occupations within the states are reliant on tips.
I've found the customer service to be pretty inconsistent over here, I really don't know why it is...
Good customer service isn't hard. People can be just too careless and lazy I suppose.
I don't think the saying, 'the customer is always right', applies in Australia.
Exactly, and also there is less competition, so they figure they are all you've got!
I sometimes just hang up, but I mostly try the nice card. Works sometimes. :)
I just found this thread :)
I lived in Az for a year as an exchange student many years ago (actually this year it'll be 20 years!!!!!!!!!!!) I lived down on the border and loved the blend of Mexican, Native American and European American cultures. I loved the beautiful scenery and I can't wait to take DF there. You honestly feel like John Wayne is going to swagger on up beside you on horseback. (I did actually see a proper cowboy one day on horse, spurs, lassoo and everything!!!) I loved getting in the car, driving for 5 mins and presto, you're in another country!
The people I met during that year were so friendly too. It wasn't long after Croc Dundee came out so I got asked a few questions about that!
My favourite weekend was when we went up to the north of Az and travelled around a number of reservations. We visited schools where they put shows on for us and got to meet loads of people. It was the weekend of my 18th birthday - I'll never forget it.

Must admit I have never wanted to know anything about the USA :o
I don't actully find the 'culture' - if you can call it that - interesting. I don't feel it has anything to offer me, I've never wanted to go there...
I don't base my perceptions on what I hear, I base it on people I have met who are from the USA. Which again, isn't very fair because I haven't met everyone of course, only various people throughout my life. My cousin married an American and lives there now and she has changed so much and not for the better so unfortunately that adds to my ideas of what society and the population in general must be like over there.
I know there are good and bad everywhere, just like here....in fact I kinda think we must be similar here in Australia, I think we are just as bad.
I guess I am a tad closed minded on this particular subject but I don't bag out Americans in general, I make fun of certain examples I have seen for example the obese American couples I saw EVERYWHERE in Italy who sit at restaurants and yelled loudly for fries and ketchup, no attempt to respect the Italian culture, no attempt to learn the language etc. I think most of the world sees the negative side of Americans because unfortunately that is what stands out the most.

That's fair enough, sort of how I feel about places like Bali or Thailand. I have no desire to travel to these countries, come to think of it. I wouldn't go to China either.
I have Chinese friends though, I respect their culture but I don't feel comfortable with the idea of traveling there.
I do notice though, perhaps because America, Canada, England, and Australia are so widely recognised, people think it's okay to be discriminative.

Let me ask the Americans who are now living in Australia - what did you have the hardest time getting used to?
Is there anything that you still haven't fully adapted to?

Let me ask the Americans who are now living in Australia - what did you have the hardest time getting used to?

Pretty much adapted, fairly well, to as much as I can think of.
I struggled with the accent, mainly because I was so young, I had my new friends telling me, "When are you going to stop talking American and be Australian already?". lol
It took me a little while to get used to the food, I had one American friend who used to bring back salt because she insisted Australian salt was bad. I had to laugh at her about that. SALT, bah of all things to import.
I thought the idea of a meat pies and sausage rolls was hilarious and I didn't really like them at first but I soon came around :) Same goes for salt and vinegar chips. (Crisps).
The water pressure is different! Especially when you flush the toilet. It's much faster in this country, same goes for showers.
That's all I can think of right now...
I get frustrated with the whole how everyone view's American's thing.
See, the only way most people ever see American's is on television. Ie.. Jerry Springer, Oprah, Dr Phil etc etc.
I love Australia and have lived here 10 years, however, I AM American, I always will be. So, when I see the media etc on certain levels, etc I get frustrated.
Just because The Chaser crew go to the US and ask 10 idiots a question they don't know, they make ALL Americans look stupid and ignorant and very embarrassing.
Americans are amongst the most caring people you will ever meet.
I DO on the other hand get why people would be turned off as what gets shown is always the worst case.
As for what took some time to get used to...
" How you goin' " I was like going where????
" I saw G'DAY Mate" asked what is G- DAY Mate?
Loads of slang took ages!
Accent sounded English at first. I know, I know. :)
All the shops are close together, whereas in CA they are all spead out.
Butcher's in Shopping Centre's and Woolie's/ Coles
Food took a long time to get used to. Tomato sauce, bbq sauce, milk (I know weird), basically all food was gross at first.
I HATED sausages. I now like them. :) Took about 5-7 yrs.

I would hate to think that the image of us is being determined by those folks!
When talking with my Australian friends, I still find that the language throws me a curve every now and then. Just not quite the same language at all it seems.

Every time I go home and visit.
My cousins try and mimic my accent but talking like Steve Irwin, thing is, they are way off.
They love it when I use Aussie slang though, and have started using the well known Aussie obscenities. :p

I have never wanted to go there. Not based entirely on what I have seen and read, but I must admit that some of it. I know that there would be a lot of wonderful people there, but there are just too many things for me to dislike to really be interested in ever going there. It would probally be bottom of the list. I hope Australia stops trying to become a mini America.
Don't get me wrong, there are certain things I really like about America too, but just much more things that I dont like. :)

I have always been fascinated with America and have wanted to visit since I was at school. After I finished m first year of work post-uni, DH and I (before we were married) went on a 3 week contiki trip around the west coast. It was awesome. I would love love love to visit NYC and one day I will. I would also love to do a long driving tour around the country, although DH's job would never allow for that long off work (not to mention finances!). I know what you girls mean though about generalisations etc. when I used to talk about wanting to visit the States, everyone would always say "oh why would you want to go there?

I never wanted to travel, but my husband had been to america years ago and really wanted me to experience it all...
so I went around the world (on my own) prior to concieving DS#1...back in 2005
and I loved every second of it...especially NY and CA.. I found everyone I met to be very friendly and helpful and would recommend travelling (especially to USA) to anyone...it may be different from what we are use to here, but that is also a good thing...truely worth it..
I remember being at work years ago and a lady next to me saying she had no interest in going to the US. I was really annoyed because I saw her as ignorant. If you do not know much about the whole picture, you really cannot judge. (that was how I felt)
Being American and living in Australia, over time I have seen how American's are portrayed and how insular a lot of Americans are in their thinking. It is not that they are dumb or wanting to appear as above others, but Americans truly ARE proud of their country. I must admit I have had a many a time of cringe-worthy moments and since Bush has been President, he has not done much for the overall perception of Americans, he has in fact made it so much worse.
I was raised in CA and when I was 18 I travelled to Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. The ultimate destination was Montana for a wedding. I was SOO surprised by the vast differences between states. That is part of the beauty of the US, each state is so individual and so seperate to that of it's neighbour. Montana was absolutely stunning! So untouched and natural.
The things that turn me OFF of the US are the medical insurance system, job's available, pay and crime rates.
I feel here, in Australia, whilst there are issues on some fronts as well, you KNOW that if you get sick, you are cared for. You are NOT going to get a $2000 bill for spraining your ankle. The job availabilities/ pay and benefits are far better here as is the room for advancement with those who are not University degree educated.
Sorry to ramble.... :)
*** I watched a Doco called 30 days about living on minimum wage in the US.. OMG, SHOCKING***
I love America and Americans they are the most friendly welcoming people! My Dh and i have been to the U.S he has been there twice and wants to go back.
All i can say what you see on TV is not what America is about i.e. Jerry Springer and such shows. The People are beautiful! i have travelled to many places and all i can say that Am,ericans are the most welcomming and friendly bunch!!
Love the USA!!
Ashleigh i too truly hate when people make those references to America people forget that there is a population of over 300 million

:o Oh yeah, doesn't look too good.
Seriously I am not ignorant enough to say that I don't like the whole country and it's people, I just have never wanted to, or thought about going, for a few different reasons that I probally feel quite strongly about.
There is still lots of great stuff about the USA.:goodvibes:

LOL You lie! You go to sleep at night with one of those repeating cassette tapes on.
Just kidding, I completely understand. Just how I feel about the countries I have no desire to visit.
My cousin married a rich man from Russia. Whenever they travel they have machine guns with them at all times and she always talks about the area she lives in being pretty corrupt.
I'm not going to say the whole of Russia is like that because I can openly admit I don't know much about Russia. :) But I'm putting it out there- That scared the cr@p out of me, especially because I know they have kids.
When you look at it from another perspective, a tone of American families have guns so that's just as scary!
