Hi Ladies,

I am having an elective c-section (due to traumatic
1st labour) in September this year and will be going private.

I have private health cover with medibank private and I am delivering at SJOG- Murdoch. My OB doesnt perform the c-section but will manage my pregnancy and at 30 weeks he is reffering me to another OB who will perform the c-section.

As I will not being seeing this DR until 30 weeks I will not know until then what he charges for delivery.

Medibank are covering my accomodation, 100% of the scheduled fee for OB and 100% of the scheduled fee for the anethatist (sp?). I am wondering if anybody can give me an idea of how much I can expect to be out of pocket??

I just dont want any nasty suprises!

can you ring the other doctor's receptionist and have them send out the quote? that way you can ring your health fund and find out how much you get back and how much you will be out of pocket.

don't forget the cost of the paediatrician.

definitely check with the other ob about any management fees? they are normally more than happy to tell you about their fees.we're with medibank and had to pay a $200 excess for the hospital stay, there was also a small gap on the anaeth. also make sure you go to medicare and register for the safety net, our bub was in oct. and the medicare year runs from jan to dec, so if you go over $1500 in medical bills you get 80% back when you take your receipts to medicare. this made a huge difference and you'll find it not too hard to go over $1500. most of the pead. bill is covered thru medicare. i was suprise c/s don't end up costing too much. when you're preg. you can claim against the obs appt at medicare and also that management fee....can be a bit ugly as the scheduled fee is only $120 or so. my obs charged me $800 this is quite cheap though. just ask everyone..they obliged to disclose all costs prior to birth.

I didnt have a C-Section, but I did have DD at SJOG Subiaco.. Medibank covered 100% the cost of the delivery. Suppose, it depends on your level of cover.

Yes, and the paediatrician is expensive! We didnt have one on call for the birth, but when we wanted to leave the hospital we had to get one to check over her. I got the bill yesterday $213.35 and he wasnt even there for 5 minutes! (And didnt even pick up her Heart Mumur!!). I'm sure Medicare will cover some of this cost though.

I was told if i went to a private hospital that it would cost anywhere between $5000-$10 000 including the obstetrician fees.
I will be going public hospita but just paying the Ob to do it. think prob couple of hundred dollars

don't forget the net medical expenses claim on your income tax either. if you out of pocket is over ?? can't remember how much, you can claim it on tax

I was out of pocket for the paediatrician only last time (at Galliers Private) but this time the OB is charging a management fee of $900.

Generally you shouldn't be out of pocket for the hospital or delivery (except the $200 excess with Medibank Private) but it is the other specialists that get you. At Murdoch SJOG you can refuse a paediatrician, physio and lactation consultant if you want to, according to the information I received in the mail.

There is a gap for the anethsetist (sp??) if you have one.

Some people I know have been $3000 out of pocket from a delivery at Murdoch but others only a few hundred and that was from the specialists.

I can let you know for certain in about 8 weeks...:)

I also had to pay for another surgeon (OB) to be present at the birth. Don't know if it was just standard practice at the hospital I went to, or if it is common elsewhere. It will be the same for my upcoming c section in April.
