View Full Version : Feeding Solids Issues
Hi
My little boy was born 26 weeks weighing 590 grams and has having problems with solids - he gags on the smallest lump and vomits - I have tried and tried to feed him he is now 15mths or 12mths corrected - did anyone have a similar problem with their prem. I think he has an oral aversion and dont know how to get around it
Any tips would be greatly appreciated
thanks

hi my litttle girl was a couple of weeks early and weight 8bl but she is 1 on wed and she wont and cant eat lumps she gags so she has really soft puree stuff still and im not sure what to do about it all my other friends babys that are the same age or younger eat bread and bicuits and all the lumpy stuff but not her.:)
My son who was nearly 2 months prem didn't partiticulaly like lumpy foods either. He could eat really soft puree stuff, but would gag on slightly lumpy stuff, then spit it out or choke.
I tried giving him whole foods like apples, biscuits, pasta etc and he was fine, so we kind of by passed the whole lumpy stage.
Perhaps you could give that a try?
My son was born at 28wks and I had the same problem we ended up seeing a speech pathologist who worked with us to stop his hypersensitivity. They think it was related to him being ventilated and having an oral/nasal gastric tube for so long. Is your son in a followup program from the hospital? They should be able to organise it for you, or a paed.
Thanks so much for your advice I am very grateful - I too think that it is an oral aversion related to being ventilated for so long - he wont put any foods in his mouth and refuses biscuits, fruits anything - unfortunately we werent put into a follow up program but I have my name down now for an early intervention program they said there could be a two month wait though - I am at the moment trying to find a good speech therapist in brisbane who might be able to help us - if anyone can recommend anyone that would be greatly appreciated - thanks so much once again I am so grateful
