Hey everyone,

My FIL is a really big Tight A**!!!

Today he calls us up and says he needs to come over and give O a present.
So we say yeah sure come over after his sleep, no problems.

He gets here and hands me a Target voucher for...........wait for it.........$5

What the????????

Dont get me wrong I dont expect FIL to bring O anything, a visit with his grand father is enough of a present but I am just astounded at how cheap he is

I could tell you a million stories of times when he has been just plain stingy and it annoys me coz he is very well off and O is his only grand child.

Where as my parents are not well off and have four kids plus two grand kids to help out and they bend over back wards to help us. They would give us the shirts off their backs! But my FIL is soooo not like that and it amazes me!

I can not understand what would posses my FIL to give us a $5 voucher?????

Sorry just need to vent, do you know any Tight A**es LOL??????

Yes, my Aunty. When we were kids my mum always said to her not to buy Xmas presents as money was tight. But my Aunty always had to buy us a $5 Woolworthes voucher. I think she was trying to say something, I'm not sure. I guess we didn't mind it too much, we would go and get $5 worth of lollies, but it was a weird gift.

oh hon!!!

((hugs)) - really just a card would have been better!!!!!

did you say - well thanks... that will buy him at LEAST 10 disposable nappies!!! :D

did you ask him why??? what it was for??

sorry to make the situation worse... but did someone give HIM the voucher?? and he thought that O might like it more??? (it made me think of the re-wrapping thread!!)

aren't families funny..??!!! and you dont get to choose them....

((hugs to you and O))

Jenny- I thought the exact same thing, I bet he got it in a show bag or something (he gets them through his work) and just thought "what can I buy with $5 Ill just give it to O"!!!!

Yeah I could understand if FIL wasnt loaded LOL he owns two houses and rakes in over 100k a year!

DH thought it said a $50 voucher but when he saw $5 he just shook his head.

I often joke that yes FIL is well off but only becoz his so tight :D

When O was born we went shopping with him and bought about $300 worth of nappies and other useful stuff. FIL offered to buy something and we said "that would be really helpful" well FIL pulls out $10 note and says "here what can I get him" I said "um baby wipes?" coz what else can you get for $10 LOL
He put the $10 back in his wallet and said "oh no I meant what toy could I get him" HELLO he was 3 days old

oh KB I see you are getting dangerously close to your 2000th post! Are we going to have another little game of hide and seek to commemorate the occasion? :p

Hey Sarah.. I know what you mean. It feels bad to be ungrateful but at the same time, it's like hardly worth the petrol to drive to the shop for a $5 voucher. KB's idea is a good one I think.

Coming into this one a bit late (my usual fashion), but I can see where you are coming from S.

It's not really about the dollar value or the fact that it is a gift, just a bit confusing

I'm sure O would get more happiness from an afternoon in the park with his grandfather (and mum and dad could have a some quality time together) - now that's a nice gift!

Well, my in-laws are a bit funny about giving presents. They can be generous with their help, if not steamrollers with it (they take you over), but when it comes to gifts, my MIL has issues with them. She always has an opinion about them or makes a big deal about giving a gift or not giving a gift. She will even tell her relatives/family not to bring one for a function or the like that you may be having if she feels that you may have already have recieved too much (in her opinion). You know that when you receive one it is through gritted teeth. I don't mind if she is not into gift giving as I know some people are not big on it anyway, and prefer to do other things, but it is the attitude of her gift giving (or not giving) that gets me. You can tell that she hates it.

I did hear a funny one the other day on the promo for the show "Grumpy Old Ladies Christmas Special" on the ABC about a MIL who gave her DIL a used soap on a rope for Christmas. There is worse out there :D

Know exactly how you feel. For me it isn't about the price of the present but the thought that went into the present. I don't care if you got it from the bargin bin at the $2 Shop, if you took the time to think about me and what I might like as a gift that makes me feel special.

My partner's father gave us a $100 gift voucher when DD was born. Ok, generous, not exactly thoughtful. Until we found out that they has received it for Xmas from someone else. That really annoyed me. We never get birthday or Xmas presents, just cash which only ever gets spent on bills. This year we aren't even getting cash. They are moving to a smaller house and need to get rid of somethings. So we are getting his mother's old bed which she died in for our DD to sleep in. Um I don't think so!

Yeah, that's why they're so wealthy because they're such bloody tight asses!!! I've got a really wealthy uncle that doesn't even help his own kids out who are all struggling and the funny thing is he is really miserable!!

My olds have never had much but they would give you the shirt off there bloody backs. Mum saved every week for about five years to take us kids to disneyland when we were kids!!!! Worked two jobs to do it too. '

yeah, well i think a five dollar voucher is a bloody insult. Someone else said, just a card would have even been better. Let's hope he pitches up with something better on Christmas!!!

Chell u poor thing, the bed thing, that's very unusual. Even if she hadn't passed away in it, i'm still not a fan of second hand beds - uuuugggghhhhhh!

reAllytee
11-12-2005, 23:58
Well i will never out do the bed thing .... thats just plain yuck !
But my MIL always give me "gifts" at Christmas or my birthday of gifts she obviously got throughout the years she doesnt want. One year part of my Christmas gift was an Avon perfume which they dont even make anymore WTH !!!!!!! Oh & last year i got this pencil case thing which i was like "oh great thanx" trying not to laugh but my partner was like " WTF is that ??!?!?!?!??! why does she need a pencil case ????" and her response was " well it might come in handy " again i was trying not to laugh ive learnt to just always take unwrapping my presents with her as a comedy .. just laugh !!
They also havent bought anything for bubs since his birth & the only reason they bought what they did before hand was to keep up with my mum ! My mum got the pram for us so she was like oh we will get you a cot yet whinged over the expensive ones so i chose a cheaper one to get " well this is a bit cheap & nasty isnt it ! " gggrrrrr. Then because my sister got a whole heap of newborn clothing which she found out about she went & bought a jumpsuit ... ONE jumpsuit which cost $8 & a pair of booties, ok now dont get me wrong im not asking to be showered in gifts but they know we are doing things tough & they dont even offer to buy a box of nappies yet my family have pretty much helped clothe him & will just drop by with a box of nappies when saying "hi" & yet my in-laws are more wealthy etc are always going on holidays overseas etc yet its hard to buy something for their grandson. Which i dont get considering the running joke with my partner & i is that she seems to think she gave birth to him !!!!!

Oh gosh. Sounds like my MIL would be in good company.

First off, she can't for the life of her remember my DH's birthday. (You gave birth to him, woman, why can't you remember?!) So the one birthday we spent with them, we happened to be spending a week at their house, and MIL& i went to the store & I made mention of needing to get something for DH's birthday. So she runs to get a card. And then brings it home and scavenges for a gift.

He got:
- Canadian Tire money (vouchers given out at the till worth 10% of what you purchased) But only 60 cents worth of Canadian Tire money...
- a coupon from a fund raiser chocolate bar. Not even the chocolate, just the coupon that comes on the wrapper.
- and one pair of socks out of a 6-pack that she had purchased for FIL.

I was astounded.

Then at Christmas last year, DH, his brother, and their sister's husband all got the same gift. A teeny little computer cord holder. Apparently you're supposed to wrap the computer cord around it and it keeps it out of the way. Well, DH's brother doesn't even own a computer, much less need one of those things. We were looking through a knick-knack catalogue a couple of weeks later and found that those cord keepers come in a 3 pack... She split it open and gave them each one.

Oh yes, and the Christmas before we got married, we had stayed at their house and noticed that they needed decent pillows and kitchen knives... So we bought them some for Christmas... Well, guess what we got for wedding presents! The set of knives and ONE pillow. unbelievable.

12-12-2005, 05:30
OMG where do these people come from  I was always taught to be generous with what ever I had LOL I mean come on a pair of socks from a six pack and the pencil case!!!!

Even when this year we dont have alot of money to splash around I have bought these lovely gold noddle boxes and put beautiful ribbon on them and am making some chocolate fudge chrissy cookies to go inside them for everyone in our families. I know its not much but its a thoughtful yummy gift and thats what matters right!

I just have to say one more time OMG

But yeah we also dont have much to spend on gifts so my partner has taken some great water & bushland views as well as plants & trees over the last year ( he loves photography ) so we got some prints made up & went to a cheap shop & invested in plain black frames which suit the pics & TA-DA !!!! pressies ! so all up its cost us around $10 per piccie & it looks like its worth at least $50 ! awesome ! hehe.
